Where does the time go it seems so recent that we moved to Orchard farm and in fact it was 20 years ago. The last month has been 20c warmer than the same time last year. It has been wet but we have only cancelled 1 days training as opposed to being shut down for 6 weeks. We normally rest our dogs in December but with qualifying for Crufts we have kept up some light work. The exception is of course emmy who delivered 8 strapping puppies on 21st Dec, 2 girls and 6 boys. It is a bit of surprise as the vet advice following an infection she had a year ago was that she could probably not have puppies and if she could it would only be 2 or 3 that was then confirmed by the scan. As it is the puppies are doing very well and emmy is a brilliant mother. The two bitches and 2 of the boys have homes and we have a couple enquiries for the other boys so it looks like 2 are still available.
So Christmas for us was quiet and we enjoyed having time to ourselves and just looking after the dogs and other animals. Claire had to work some days of the holiday but Mike and Sara went on the Diamond xmas walk with Jet, Dee and Rusty, they had a really enjoyable time on Dolbury Warren and a great pub lunch to finish off.
New years was also quiet apart from the annoying fireworks why do they have to be so loud.
Although we have enjoyed the break we are starting to get withdrawal symptoms and we are really looking forward to starting training again.
30th Nov The last month has been very busy partially thanks to the good weather, for November it has been very dry and mild with just enough rain to keep the grass growing. Our best news is that Emmy is pregnant. There are still a few things that can go wrong so we are only cautiously optimistic at this stage. She will have a scan in one week and as each day goes by there is a better chance of success. She has changed in so many ways, no longer bouncy and lively but quiet and careful, what will she be like when it is over. We will only have a couple of months to get her ready for Crufts.
Dee did her first nursery sheepdog trial, the organisation was unusual and only 3 sheep were used which is not a good idea as that low a number will not flock together and just want to get to the other sheep it took 3 men and a dog to get them out and as soon as they moved away the sheep bolted back, then the pen was next to the collecting area so the sheep just want to get straight to the finished. In some cases the sheep split with one going to one bunch and two to the other. Not the best situations for first time nursery dogs. In spite of this Dee did her best and came 4th. We are not sure how much further to take the sheepdog trialling. Can we do it as well as the agility.
We have a team of over 12’s for the junior open in February and Sara is in an under 12 team that should be an exciting weekend.
20th October
We have been very busy. We have ended up running 9 smaller weekend agility classes to fit the different requirements and may end up with 10 as there are still a few people we are having problems fitting in. At the moment there are 5 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday and a couple have been split into 2 groups so we have ended with just 3-5 in a group which has meant they get some very good training. It is very satisfying to know we have so many people wanting to train with us when you consider how many clubs and private trainers there are in this area. But then some recent additions to private training in this area have very little experience or evidence of ability in either dog training or agility. Perhaps it is time there was more regulation and an introduction of minimum standards before people can start training others.
Mike has also run some introduction to sheepdog training and assessment workshops with mixed results. Nearly all the farm bred and ISDS dogs have shown potential as working dogs, but with the KC registered dogs it is the other way round.Mike has also been very busy during the week with agility 1-2-1’s and with private lessons including some dogs that have been difficult to train. Emmy has been in season and mated with Jet. We will have to wait another 3 weeks before finding out from the vet if it has been successful. Emmy is doing a little work while she is in the 3 week safe period but will have to stop if we find she is pregnant. She has not been very focused so it will be interesting to see if we can get her ready for crufts. Mike is still having problems running so has been limited to what training he can do but Dee is getting better all the time. She is now training on full height jumps nearly all the time and hardly ever has a pole down. She is still a little slow and careful on contacts and weaves but we are gradually improving her speed. Jet is doing some amazing advanced distance handling and most of the time finds it better that Mike cannot run everywhere with him but occasionally it goes wrong and it is much more difficult to recover when you are a long way from the dog. Claire took Ty to the WAO tryouts and thought she had done reasonably well but it would seem that is not enough the assessors mark the dogs on how they think it should have been handled rather than the results and none of the criteria were explained in advance. Combined with linking it to the UKA masters they seem to have come up with the most unfair and biased way of selecting a team yet. This is quite an achievement when you consider the other UK methods it can be compared with. It makes us quite pleased that the BSD selection is done purely on performance in the selection.
10th October
And suddenly it is autumn. We have moved to winter training times on Saturday and Sunday. We have tried to please everyone and have dogs of the same standard and size together , and for people with more than one dog to have the classes next to each other. We are now doing nine small classes and there still people not happy that it is not exactly perfect for them. Sometimes it makes you feel like not bothering with the classes. We are busy enough with 1-2-1’s for agility, difficult dogs, sheepdog training and stock socialisation. Claire is working full time at a local stables while the owner is having a baby. Claire is thoroughly enjoying it and is getting to ride some very interesting horses but is not finding much time for dog training. The plan is for her to do less at the stables when Beanie can ride again and get back to dog training ready for next season. Mike is still having serious problems with his foot and the NHS timescales do not help. We hope there is a big improvement before the selection for the BSD world championships. He is also being encouraged to do some nursery trials with Dee this winter with an idea of doing sheepdog trials with her next summer, how that would fit in with agility is difficult to see, and she is looking exceptional in that discipline.
Claire and Emmy have been invited to Discover dogs to do a trial for a new ABC novice competition to come out next year but Emmy has come into season and it does not look like she will be able to go.
Claire and Ty had an interesting time at the WAO try outs, they nailed some of the tests and messed up others. Which was what most people did giving the selectors something to think about but they can always fall back on the on the old favourites. No one got sacked buying IBM.
3rd October
What a glorious week bright sunshine and temperature in the high 20’s too hot in the afternoon for dog training but fantastic sessions in the morning and evening. Then a great end to our competition season at Chippenham. Unfortunately Mikes foot problem flared up leading him to fall over in the Medium championships and making it worse, as a consolation a very nice young lady from Honiton presented him with a surprise trophy from Honiton show in spite of taking an unusual route Rusty had won grade 7 agility against some very impressive competition. Mike couldn’t run very well but still managed a 12th with Jet in g6 agility and best of all Dee did a clear round in g3 agility and came 9th a very promising sign for next season. Claire was unlucky in large championship, doing a stunning jumping round and just getting 5 in the weaves in agilty but not qualifying for the final. Holly provided her consolation coming 2nd in g3 jumping. Sarah and Jet did brilliantly in YKC junior agility coming second and qualifying for crufts next year.
We now have a bit of a break as summer training comes to an end and we change to weekends.
We are hoping that Emmy will come into season this month and we can have litter of puppies from her and Jet.
October is not looking like a quiet month Claire is trying out for the WAO world championships and Mike has to get Jet ready for the BSD selection for their world championships.
25th September
It has been very strange not having Dash around we all miss her so much. Being busy with the other dogs and animals helps a bit. Also the weather has improved at last a few days of sunshine and not getting wet helps lift the spirits. At the weekend we went to Honiton show travelling each day. It is one of those shows that is nearly good. The setting is fantastic set in the Otter valley and it should be a really good show. Certainly it was helped on Saturday by having plenty of sunshine, even Sunday started wet but brightened up from midday. Then the little negative details started to tell, long wet grass with a liberal spread of sheep droppings, trudging up and down the hill from the day parking to the rings, greasy spoon catering, toilets getting increasingly badly maintained, dams supplying old style weaves not in the best state of repair so end poles were at funny angles and poles were wobbly. Then dogs normal weaving action made holes in the soft soil under the support bars to the extent it was dangerous. Some judges left them out and some moved them between classes. It would have been so much better to have them to the new specification. Then there was the usual inconsistency in course design and judging. They are all little things that you could put up with individually but added together they make you wonder if it is the best way to spend a weekend.
On the agility front there were some good results, Jane and Boot won G4 agility, Jan and Lexie won G4 Jumping and Claire and Emmy were third, Jet was 7th in Combined 6/7 agility and Sara and Jet won Junior jumping so we have some nice Otter valley glasses one of the things the show organisers got right.
We are starting to organise winter training classes at moment we are planning them to starts October 8th/9th and that they will be

18th September
It has been a very sad week for us as we have lost Dash (Dot Dot Dash of Valgray) she was 16 years old and starting to get a bit frail. She collapsed while scrounging treats at training on Monday night and we took to the Vets on Tuesday morning. No specific problem could be found other than she was anaemic. She came home with some pain relief medication and seemed a bit better on Wednesday. On Thursday morning she did not want to get up and seemed to be quite comfortable and content lying on her bed in the sun. We were arranging to take her back to the vets but she passed away quietly. She was the sweetest most genuine dog we have ever had and she will be very sadly missed.
We carried on with lessons as normal and held another very enjoyable instructors course on Friday and Saturday.
On Sunday we went to Blackdown show on Sunday. It could have been a very good day but was unfortunately spoiled by heavy downpours and gusty winds. Ty did a great round winning G7 jumping, Jet was 7th in G6 agility, Emmy was 4th in G4 Jumping, Holly was 8th in G3 jumping. We were also very please that Rosemary and Tom won G3 agility, Irana and Tess came second in G2 agility, and Jan was 3rd in G4 Jumping.
Dee worked very well just having a couple of poles down, she is very impressive for such a young dog getting the weaves and contacts. She should be very good next season. She also is doing very well in her sheepdog training and our trainer is encouraging us to do some nursery trials.
We have also tried changing handlers for Rusty at the last few shows. Claire has 3 dogs to work and Flake to train. Rusty was becoming one too many for her so we have tried Mike and Sara working him. He tries very hard for them at home so it would be interesting to see if it would be the same at shows. It did not work very well with Sara he was very easily distracted but he has worked very well for Mike getting a few clear rounds. So the plan for next season is for Mike to work him and for Sara to take over when she is a bit older.
12th September
The nights are drawing in a bit now and we have experience some stormy weather. We have move some evening classes to be a bit earlier but are still training up until 8pm with a smaller group. We had a reasonable couple of days at Gillingham show on Saturday Claire did a great championship jumping run coming 10th but had a couple of contact faults in the agility so did not make the final. We got a few clear rounds and Emmy got a 10th in g4 jumping. Most exciting was it was Dee’s first show she did very well just having a couple of poles down and missing one weave entry. Some of the courses were a bit disappointing an example is that there was a g1&2 class next to a grade 3&4 class and you could not tell the difference between them. Judging was as inconstant as the weather. A couple of examples Holly did an outstanding agility run and would have won the class by 2 seconds everyone watching was astounded that the judged marked the up contact of the dog walk, looking at video it is clear that she got the contact and that the judge was in the wrong position to see it clearly being at the far end of the dog walk, he must have decided she must have missed it because she was going so fast. This is so wrong if judges are not absolutely sure a dog has missed a contact they should give the dog the benefit of the doubt. Then when Mike was working Jet in g6&7, there was a heavy downpour just as they started. Really the class should have been stopped but the ring manager said carry on. Then just as Mike and Jet were doing a critical turn someone from the control box shouted to the judge who shouted back distracting both Mike and Jet. Mike thought they were stopping the class due to a timing failure or the appalling conditions and stopped and of course jet missed the turn. It turned out the judge was just being asked if he wanted a better coat, that could have waited 10 seconds until the run had finished , the judge should not be talked to or distracted and certainly should have been more professional about considering a rerun, it is just not good enough in a crufts qualifier. We were very pleased though that Jane and Welly did a brilliant grade 3 run coming second and showing that they are ready for G4 and that Kev and Jake got a third place. The other really good thing about the show was we were finished and home early.
6th September
Claire was at the Olympia semi finals last weekend Emmy was in the ABC but freaked out at the judge and flew her contacts, hopefully she will settled down soon. Ty did very well in th G6,7 with very competitive time but had an unlucky pole down, if he had been drawn in the other group it would have been good enough to qualify but not in his.
Mike and Sara went to Prestbury park and camped with the Diamond crew. It was a little disappointing, it might have been that expectations were a bit too high, we have had such a good time there in previous years when we travelled each day, it could be the weather was a bit changeable, the venue is superb but it seemed we had to walk miles to the rings and we were closer than a lot of people why cant ring be central. It didn’t help having road right through the middle and next to where we were camped with a constant stream of lorries going to the polo. At least they had to slow down to negotiate the corner but the grooms and spectators drove though far too fast with no respect for people or dogs, and the then unexpected the fire work display late night followed up by the shouts of people searching for their dogs. What were they doing out in gardens unattended and at risk. By Sunday we were exhausted and were running a ring, consequently we only had a couple of clear runs all weekend. We will not camp there again.
31st August
It has been an unusual month. Claire went to the KC festival and had a very good time. So much so she is going again next year which goes against all the bad press it gets. She had some good runs and got some places. Emmy is still having problems with contacts and judges following on from the upset at the BSD world championships, but is doing very well in jumping classes. Mike, Sara and Jet went to Pembroke for a week. Mike judged one day at Pembroke show and Sara worked Jet and on the other 2 days Sara worked Jet in the special classes and Mike worked him in the standard classes. Sara won and got a second in Juniors and also managed a sixth in grade 6 jumping and 9th in steeplechase. Mike had 3 third places and a fourth in combined 6&7 classes. It was an enjoyable show but there is some room for improvement for the new management team. Combined with the trips to the beach, swimming, body boarding and campfire singsongs with good friends it made for a great holiday.Claire and Jane then went on road trip to the far north over the bank holiday. It started as a nightmare it took them 10 hours to get up to Wyre show which was then cancelled on the Saturday due to bad weather. It ran on Sunday and they had some consolation with Jane and Welly winning G3 agility and Claire and Emmy winning G4 jumping. They then drove across the country to the champ day of Northern week. Unfortunately they were not so successful there possibly due to the previous nights celebrations.
Training has been a bit sporadic as expected in the holiday period with some very quiet lessons and then suddenly everyone coming on the same night. Being flexible we have managed to provide something to suit each eventuality but it will be good to get back to the normal routine.
We had another great instructors course and have been asked to run another special course Oct 8th/9th.
8th August
More good news on the results front Ty has qualified for the Olympia Semi finals so both him and Emmy will be going with Claire to the City of Birmingham show for the next rounds. Apart from that it has been a strangely quiet. Which is just as well as have all had some sort of virus that is going around. Fortunately not at the same time so there has been someone available to take lessons. Claire made the long trip to the agility club show but really should not have gone as she was not well enough and did not do well. We did one day at Caerphilly which we enjoyed and got some clear rounds but we were not on very good form.
We recovered just in time for our agility instructor course. It was a very successful and enjoyable couple of days with a good mixture of students and dogs. Our dogs performed brilliantly and we are so pleased with them and the way they display our training which is really quite simple and effective.
Dee continues to be exceptional doing well in agility and her sheepdog training she is entered for a couple of shows at the end of the season. That should give us an idea of what we need to focus on for winter training so she is ready for next season. The only potential problem we can see at the moment is she is a very alert dog and looks around a lot, we have taken her to some shows and she is very interested in dogs in the rings. So we have been working her in some classes to get her use to other dogs working.
Claire is taking Ty and Emmy to the KC festival and then Mike and Sare are taking Jet to the Pemboke show where Mike is judging. We then have quite a busy September at Prestbury Park,Gillingham, Blackdown and Honiton finishing up at Chippenham championship show.
21st July
While the diary was having a break in updates we had some amazing results. Most significant is we have a team going to crufts. Claire with Emmy, Lynn with Lexie, Phil with Dylan, and Mike with Jet won the team qualifier at the Lansdown show, Jane with Boot is reserve. Helen has continued with her winning streak with Daisy coming first at our own Diamond show a very difficult thing to do, winning out of grade 3 and into grade 4. Chris and Nellie have won into grade 6, Jill and Jonah won agility G1 at Diamond following on from a previous agility win at Lune, and Irana and Tess at Rugby Championship show no less did their first and a brilliant clear round to come second in G1 agility.
16th July
We apologise to regular readers of Diamond Diary for the interruption in updates. We have had an incredibly busy time starting with the FMBB world championships in Belgium. Mike went as team manager and Claire took Emmy to compete in the individual competition. A full report of our adventures there is in that section of this website. Then we were back and straight into a series of shows and getting ready for our own Diamond show which was again very successful. At the same time classes have been very busy and we have an increasing amount of 1-2-1 lessons, Claire for Agility and Mike with difficult dogs. We have also had Lee Windeatt here for a whole week between Tuffley and Diamond shows. This was very enjoyable and interesting. It is especially good as it attracts in the more experienced handlers from a wide area who are trying to do better in the higher classes, and it means Mike and Claire can train with other grade 6 & 7 dogs. Lee’s methods take the way that we train a step further and fit well with our ideas. Unfortunately more local handlers competing in the higher grades have decided to use other so called systems. We are now starting to see the benefits and who has the best method Ty is doing very well in Championship classes. His best yet is to go into the final at Nottingham in second place and he finished 9th at Rugby.Rusty has not disgraced himself in his first championship class. Mike and Jet are really enjoying working in grade 6 and usually get 2 clear rounds a day often in the places. Emmy is doing very well especially in jumping but has also got a couple of agility trophies. Holly is an almost dog, she almost wins at every show, she often the fastest dog in the class but with a fault. Entering the weaves straight on is her biggest problem she is just too fast to pick up the entrance and steady is not something she understands yet. Most exciting of all is Dee she looks to be a real talent. She could come out at Gillingham if she is ready, but it is more likely we will just enter her in agility only for Blackdown, Honiton and possibly Chippenham23rd May
This week has been strangely quiet. Lessons have just been ticking over nicely and we have not had any competitions. That was just as well as Mike has lost his voice and has been quite unwell. Claire and Glenda have had to take all the classes. Claire and Sara have been training our dogs and they are all looking well and in good form. Sara is going to do a few junior classes with Jet and possibly Ty depending on the schedule. There is 10 days to go to our Diamond show entries close. At the moment it is looking like our show will be slightly bigger than last year. Mike, Claire and Helen are going to the BSD world championships in 10 days then when they get back we will be very busy organising the show and we have a lot of competitions.
17th May
A strange sort of a week a few cold fronts have blown through with some showers and we had some chilly spells but still not a great deal of rain. Mike and Glenda have had nasty colds but so far Claire and Sara have stayed free of them. Training stayed busy and we have done some good training with our dogs. It was the WAO world championships at the weekend. Claire went all 3 days but Mike was not well enough. Claire reported a varied standard but generally not as good as last years. The home teams did well and we were very pleased that Dave and Rusty are on great form hopefully they will do well at the Belgian Shepherd world championships in June. Claire has been training hard for this event both with her own fitness and with Emmy. Nearly all her competition runs have been training. We hope it pays off but in reality Emmy is only just 3 and it is their first time at this event so it is really preparation for future years.
It was Sara’s birthday on Saturday she was at a Pony Club rally for most of the day and came home for a party with some of her friends. In the evening some older friends from the Diamond crew and family called in and we had a very pleasant evening. On Monday Lee stayed over from the WAO and ran training workshops for us. We tried 3 smaller groups for a shorter time just over 2 hours and it worked very well. The Monday evening classes were packed with some people coming back even though they had been at workshops during the day.
May9th
At last rain some of it quite heavy. The grass and garden are refreshed but the ground is soaking it up like a sponge we will need a lot more. The arena is better but still dusty so we are using the grass paddock when we can. Training has carried on as normal and we have only had to shelter in the barn a couple of times. Claire went of to Tunbridge Wells show she had a great time camping with Jane in her caravan. Between them they got some good clear rounds but the early season qualifiers had attracted a lot of top handlers and the standard was very high. Claire and Ty did an amazing run in the Crufts qualifier but only managed a 19th place it was out of 230 grade 6&7 dogs. Emmy is on good form getting a 5th. Mike did not like the idea of the long drive and camping and so went to a local show at Taunton run by Blackdown club. We have been working on Jets drive and speed with some advice from Lee and it seems to paying off they did some great runs getting, 5th in Grade 6 agility, 6th in Combined 5-7 agility, and 7th in G6 jumping. The standard of the dogs and handling in the higher grades was very good but you have to wonder how they would do at a bigger show. Mike offered to help as they are a small friendly club and ended up ring managing all day. It is good that they offered classes at every grade and size but they it was organised with course walking between every size and grade meant it was a very long day when there were only modest entries. It was a dry day but with a very strong gusty wind some new judges had problems adjusting their courses to the condition and dog walks were gradually removed from rings causing more delays. The ring Mike was managing was for agility in grades 1,2,and 3 in all sizes and quite frankly he was shocked by the standard. With only a few exceptions the level the dogs were trained to and the handling was appalling. Even in grade 3 some people complained bitterly about what was a very simple course and only few got it right. Why is there such a gap between the lower and higher grades, where are these people training, are they all entering shows before they are ready, whatever is happening they are being let down by their clubs and instructors.
May 3rd
Unbelievable we still have not had a drop of rain and there is none forecast for this week. The ground is very dry and hard and the arena is very dusty. Our lessons are getting busier all the time and we are having a job to fit everything in. We kept Saturday and Sunday free of shows and had Lee Windeatt here for some workshops. All the people on the workshops found them useful but they are especially good for Mike and Claire. It gives them a fresh perspective on training and a chance to get some top class training themselves. It is a shame there is no-one else locally who trains in the same style and compete at the same level.
On Monday it was back to shows. Most of the Diamond Dog crew went to the North Somerset Show just down the road from us. Although it is a show Mike set up when he was chairman of Severnside DAC, and we have done well there in the past it is not one of our favourites. It is just too busy and noisy for concentrating on agility. We do enjoy the agricultural side of it and meeting our farming friends but instead we went to Vyne so Claire and Ty could do their second championship show.
The Diamond people who went to North Somerset Show did very well especially Helen who won her third grade 3 Jumping with Daisy and is now grade 3. Jo Burt and Merlin won grade 1 agility and Jill and Jonah who have not been competing long won grade 1 jumping.
Mike and Claire had a good day at Vyne at Newbury showground for the sixth day in 3 weeks. It was nice to be at a show and not working. There was not a cloud in the sky but there was a freezing cold strong wind which made things difficult. Dog walks were not used in a number of rings. The standard was amazingly high as you would expect at a championship show. Claire and Ty started with a great run in champ jumping but Ty was a bit too far ahead of Claire at the finish and got marked for going past the last jump. They did an absolutely brilliant run in the champ agility but did not quite make it into the final.
Emmy worked well and is improving continuously as she gets more experience, she did an outstanding run in the ABC and has now definitely qualified for the next round coming fifth.
Jet did well getting 2 clears but is still down on the time something we will have to work on.
Holly is settling down as an agility dog and is getting better behaved all the time. We are so pleased as it could have been that she had so many problems that competing was not possible. As it is she is blisteringly fast just a cloud of dust in these conditions and the only problem is weaves. Unfortunately it is not a problem we can recreate at home so may be difficult to fix.
25th April
It has been an incredible couple of weeks. There has not been any rain following on from a very dry March and it has been more like midsummer than April. Drought conditions are fast approaching. We have spent 5 days at Newbury showground at Wallingford and WBSDS shows and our training has been packed at all levels. Our dogs have been very successful our team of Phil and Dillon, Mike and Jet, Claire and Emmy and Jane and Boot, came 3rd in the Team dash at Wallingford in spite of chaotic team organisation. We enjoyed Wallingford show it was much better organised than the last one we went to a couple of years ago, we ended up doing a lot more measuring there than we expected as there were so many people desperate to get their dogs measured. Rreally it was too much sandwiched between Shuttleworth and WBSDS shows that we have to go to as they raise funds for the BSD world champ teams. WBSDS was 3 days of Easter this year we had intended to camp but had to travel each day and Glenda and Sara are away on holiday. We will have to do things differently next year it is too exhausting. We have had some good results in spite of working at the shows Rusty won Grade 6 agility and is now in grade 7. We have to decide how much championship to do with him he is not really reliable enough. Ty is starting to get good places in Grade 7 including 2nd and 3rd in jumping, Claire trains his contacts in agility classes in preparation for championship and qualifiers. Emmy is putting in some great runs getting good places in jumping again Claire is mostly training her contacts. Even so Emmy has well over the number of points to move up to grade 4 and we are thinking about when would be the best time to do it if she doesn’t win out first. Holly is coping very well with being at shows and is starting to settle down to work but she is so fast it is causing her to get faults particularly on weaving, her contacts are surprisingly very good for such a fast dog.
Mike and Jet are enjoying working in grade 6 and Jet is getting a couple of clear rounds each day but is 2 or 3 seconds behind the winners. So we are still looking for a bit more speed this is has not been helped by the hot weather which Jet does not like. We are also not sure he is completely sound and may have a slight injury as he is doesn’t look quite right and sometimes is having a jump down so we are going to try resting him for ten days.
Dee’s training is progressing well both with the sheep and agility, she is such a happy little dog and so eager to please she is a joy whatever she is doing.
Flake is coming along nicely and reports are that the rest of the litter are as well. We see some of them regularly and some of them occasionally.
The Diamond agility club crew are doing well, Rosemary has won another grade 3 jumping and can now go into grade 4, Jan and Lexie won Grade 3 agility and are also now in grade 4, Helen won another grade 2 jumping with Daisy, and came 3rd in the same class with Taz a remarkable achievement. Phil and Dillon won a grade 2 agility and is now grade 3 and got some very good jumping places.
And the season has only just started.
11th April
It has been a very busy week changing over to summer training and we had some summer weather. Dee and Mike went for sheepdog training she worked well but you could tell she has not been able to train due to lambing when comparing her progress against those dogs that have been able to train most days. She has done more agility training to fill the gap and that is very impressive. We were then getting ready for our first big show weekend of the season. We went to Spring at Shuttleworth on Friday to help set up and do some training for the world championships it was very hot and sunny for the time of year, to hot to be working so hard. We stayed in a travel lodge on the AI which worked well. There were some places to walk the dogs around the hotel but it was slightly spoiled by the gypsy camp nearby. They had made the most disgusting mess all around. On Saturday we went up to Scunthorpe where it was cloudier and cooler for Claire and Ty to do their first championship class and the Crufts G6,7 qualifier. We started with the crufts class and were very pleased Ty came 15th and Jet did a good clear round but was just out of the places. A good start for both at this level of competition. Ty’s championship agility run was very good his tail just touched the end of the long jump and it gently toppled over for just 5 faults. He was eliminated in the very testing jumping as were 80% of the dogs. Emmy and Holly did some nice rounds and Jet worked very well. On Sunday we were back to Shuttleworth and the hot weather Ty was now in training mode, Jet did some good runs but was not quite quick enough for a place again. Holly did best getting a third place in jumping we are so pleased after all her problems. Emmy also got good placings in both agility and jumping but we were flagging from running a ring in the heat. By the time we had helped pack up we were exhausted and the drive home was a trial. We were very pleased to get home at 10pm.
3rd April
It would have been a rest week as we were changing over from winter to summer training, but we were busy getting ready for our first agility instructor’s course of this year. It was a very good course of 15 people. They all had previous experience of dog training and agility so it was our condensed 2 day course. It is a slight worry that everyone will be able to keep up with what is a very busy couple of days but they all coped very well and we covered all the planned topics and a few more that people asked for. Ten people were staying at the nearby Bridge Inn and we had a very enjoyable meal with them on Saturday night. Feedback on the course was excellent and many of them are booking up for the follow up course and other workshops.
We have had some more lambs, a few more than expected with twins and one lot off triplets, but no singles. It has held up proper sheepdog training with Dee but it has proved useful for her self control making her lie down and staying quiet while we work on the lambs.
All the dogs are fit and well and we are very excited about the competition season which starts for us in April. We think our dogs are in good form but we will soon know for sure.
27th March
We have had a fantastic week with beautiful sunny weather pleasantly warm but not too hot ideal for dog training. We have done some excellent and very enjoyable training. In addition to our normal classes Claire ran some weave workshops. We were not sure how well they would work and hour of just weaving seems a lot but they have turned out to be very successful with all the dogs showing considerable improvement. All our dogs are working well in agility and we are very excited about our competition season starting in a couple of week’s time.
Mike took Dee sheepdog training on Tuesday and was very pleased with her. John gave him some good tips and suggested he try a trials training day the following Sunday. Mike put the tips into practice on Thursday morning and did the best bit of sheepdog training he has ever done with any dog. Dee worked like a trials dog. On Saturday Mike took her to check the sheep and just do a few minutes practice and she was terrible, she just flew in and scattered the sheep. It is always worth remembering dogs are not machines and training can be great leveller. So it was with some trepidation he took her to the trials training on Sunday. There was no need to worry she was a star and did everything asked of her. If Mike had been a bit more relaxed it would have been even better. Hopefully confidence will grow for both of them.
Mike has written an article on training Belgian Shepherds for sheepdog work and we wanted some photos to go with it. The lambs had to go out to join the flock and we decided Emmy would be the ideal to go along. We had not done any herding training with her for over six months because of injury and we thought she would just follow them along with a steady drive.
To see her you would think she did it every day she kept just the right distance behind the ewes to keep them moving but close enough to make them defend their lambs. When we got to the field we sent her to gather the flock and bring them to the ewes and lambs and again she surprised us she worked them really wide which makes it easier to see what is happening but circled and flanked keeping very good control. It would not be any good for a trial but would do very well ona working farm.
21st March
Great news Holly is fine. We took her back to the specialist and he is happy with the way the leg has mended and is working. It is also well muscled and she is not using the other leg to do all the work. There may still be some scaring and soft tissue damage which explains the funny movements she makes with it sometimes. He also said lots of exercise including agility would be good for her. The plate and screws do not have to be removed. We are so pleased.
We have had some glorious weather, training in t-shirts, but we know there could be a surprise in store. We have had bad weather including snow and frost in April. So we have made the best of it and we have been very busy. As well as agility classes we have done quite a lot of 1-2-1’s and Claire ran some specialist weave workshops which were very successful. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons Mike ran the introduction to sheepdog training and dog assessments in conjunction with www.allaboutsheepdogs.com. It was very interesting as the dogs all collies were from quite different backgrounds. The ones that showed most potential were those that had had the least obedience training! Dee demonstrated as Ty was a bit lame she rose to the occasion and was brilliant.
On Friday we had the first AGM of the Diamond Dog Agility Club it was a very positive, sociable and friendly affair. Long may it continue.
We managed to fit a couple of good Mendip walks in. We are now spending more time on each walk and covering a lot more distance as the dogs and us are getting fitter. We are discovering some fantastic new places on our trips and Claire has put some great photos at http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?id=1545837352&aid=2003276
13th March
It’s been an unusual week. Claire took Holly and Emmy to the smart clinic on Monday. There is still something not quite right with Hollies leg so she is going to see the specialist again. On Tuesday Mike took Dee to sheepdog training she is improving each time. There was a different bunch of sheep this time. They had been used for a training trial the Sunday before and were very lively. It a totally new experience for Dee but she coped very well. She had to run and work harder than she ever has before. She was exhausted and slept all the way home and most of the afternoon but when Mike went to check our sheep and feed them in the evening she was raring to go. Canen dogs are amazing. We packed a lot of training in on Wednesday and then it was Crufts. Claire went up Thursday and met up with Jan and Helen, and on Friday Claire and Glenda went and Jan, Helen, Jane and Jill were there Lee joined them when he wasn’t working his dogs and entertained them with his views of the proceedings. Mike held the fort at home and did a few 1-2-1 lessons. On Saturday and Sunday the classes were busy with lots of enthusiasm and there were breaks in training when everyone went into the house to watch the Crufts agility finals on livestream. We will have to get a large screen for next year.
6th March Not quite such a hectic week but still busy, it has been dry but very cold when it has been cloudy with a northerly wind. Come on spring. At last the fields have started to dry out and we have been able to do some good sheepdog training. Dee is getting better with each session and we are steadily raising the standard. We are working on improving her out run she is quite good to the right in fact she is getting too right handed, but she will cut in when on the left. We also did a couple of really good Mendip walks Flake came on one and loved it. She did very well lasting longer than we expected before she had to be carried. Tricky is in season so could not come and it driving the boys mad. We have made a point of working Ty and Jet as the must get used to it. On Saturday Claire and Jane went all the way to the mid downs show the idea had been for Ty to do some G7 classes to qualify for G7 but as he already did that it turned into training for him. Emmy did some good runs and she was in the placings but as it was such a long way to travel home they had to leave before the final results. Claire also worked Daisy for Helen and got 6th in G3&4 agility. Jane did some good runs but had some faults. On Sunday we had a simulated show. The idea is for the people who have not competed yet to get an idea of how it all works and for practice for everyone. It was a beautiful sunny day if still cold and a lot of fun.
27th Feb
Nearly the end of Feb. Where does the time go. We have had a really busy week. It was the half term break and Sara is getting very keen on riding so we have had some of her riding friends come to use the arena, and she has been riding Flame and Ruby every day and Becky has been helping Claire with the horses and riding Max Claire’s 16.2 horse. There has been some very heavy rain so all the horses and ponies have been in stables. We would like to have the sheep in but they are not having lambs this year due to problems with Rams. We do not have the room to have them in unless there is a very good reason like lambing. It does mean that we can use them all for sheepdog training instead of splitting off the pregnant ewes which is useful.
On Tuesday morning Mike and Sara took Dee down to the centre of Somerset for sheepdog training.Dee has a lot of drive and ability the main thing we are working on now is getting a wider out run as she tends to go straight to the sheep. Once she gets behind them she is doing quite well at fetching and flanking.
On Tuesday evening Claire went to a practise show at Stretchholt indoor school she did a couple of runs with Holly that she was very pleased with but did not do the whole session with her as she is still not fully competition fit. She did the last couple with Ty who is on great form. Helen also took Daisy and did some outstanding work with her. They are really getting it together now.
On Friday we had a day’s training here with Lee Windeatt. I was very useful especially for the people who train with us regularly because the way he trains and handles is very similar to the way we do it. People who use other so called “handling systems” found it a bit more challenging. Lee also had some very good ideas that could easily be added on to what we do. For example the way to deal with a dog walk with a tunnel close underneath it, and proofing contacts. He also had some good ideas about how we can get a bit more speed from our dogs which is what we need now they are in grades 6 & 7.
At the weekend Claire was away at Devon Dogs training with Mark Laker. On saturday morning Flake did a puppy class which is very useful think to do in a new environment for her. She coped brilliantly with the journey and the day and her sister Spring was there looking very nice. In the afternoon Claire worked Ty and found it interesting to get another view on how to handle but decided to stick with the way that works for us. On Sunday she did a sports coaching and psychology day without dogs and found it very interesting and now has some good new ideas.
In between all this our normal lessons have been busy but with a different feel to them. As it is half term some people cannot come but other people can do a bit more. Also the competition season is nearly here, we are starting to do more course work and excitement is building.
Mike is also seeing more “difficult dogs”. We saw this description of them somewhere and decide we like this better than dogs with “behaviour problems”. Only a tiny percentage of the dogs we see actually have a behaviour problem. Mostly they are dogs behaving typically for the breed and type of dog they are, or have developed ways of dealing with their environment or situation that are unacceptable to the people they live with and the owner does not have the experience, knowledge or skills to deal with them. Typically they are lovely high drive dogs that it would a joy to work in agility, sheepdog, field or working trials, or even vermin control but are not easy to live with in a domestic urban home.
20th Feb
The weather has continued to change daily with good days and bad. After our exhausting trip on Sunday we were thinking of having a rest day Monday but it was a glorious morning so we took the dogs on a long Mendip walk instead. Still being in season Emmy couldn’t come so stayed home in the style of a member of a world championship team. In the afternoon we had a couple of 1-2-1 lessons and some admin to catch up with. Tuesday morning started wet as Mike drove down to deepest Somerset to take Dee to the first sheepdog training of the year but it cleared in time for the training. This was an assessment of dogs to sort them out into groups for proper training. Quite a long drive for a 5 minute assessment but it was very interesting to watch the other dogs. The training is organised by Duchy College and to go on it you must have a holding number so it was an interesting mix of farmers and smallholders with and equally interesting mix of dogs 9 collies of various breeding and 3 kelpies. Wednesday stayed dry for a packed day of group lessons and 1-2-1’s and it was clear enough on Thursday morning for another Mendip walk. This time we met a group of police dog handlers training 5 very powerful looking GSDs and a Rotty. We were very pleased with how well behaved our dogs were walking past them. On Thursday afternoon and Friday Claire had some agility 1-2-1’s and Mike saw a couple of difficult dogs. It absolutely poured down from 11pm Friday until 8am Saturday morning our fields were a quagmire but then arena drained in time for the busy weekends lessons. In addition to lessons we have started measuring dogs ready for the coming competition season, it is early days but it seems a lot better way of doing than has been the case until now. Apart from exercise we have not done any training with Jet, Emmy and Ty as they have had such a busy winter. That has given us time to work with the others. Dee is alternating between agility and sheepdog training with the emphasis in both on control she has more than enough drive and she is so eager to please. Holly has started more serious training. Her leg has not set quite straight, it does not seem to affect but may lead to problems so we are being very careful with her.Flake has started puppy training and it is great fun. She is such bubbly lively little girl. As the week comes to an end it seems Tricky is coming into season and Emmy is not anywhere near finishing. They are somewhat moody and Jet and Ty are very distracted.Rusty and Scooby even though they are castrated are quite interested so it looks like the coming week will be interesting.
14th Feb
We have had some beautiful days this week ideal for dog training and the evenings are starting to stay light longer. Unfortunately that has been balanced out with wintery showers, heavy rain and hail. Mike has finished pruning in the orchard and has moved on to hedging. The dogs are not able to join him as it is too close to the busy road, so had to make do with normal walks.
The highlight of our week was on Sunday with the final selection day for the Great Britain agility team for the FMBB (international Belgian Shepherd Dog society). Mike as team as manager has been kept busy with arranging the selection. He also worked Jet in the selection and Claire worked Emmy. We have been training hard towards this and were quite hopeful although the standard is higher each year and there are some very good dogs to compete against. We got up at 5am to make the long journey to Dartford at this time on Sunday the road are quite clear and we got there at 9am to start setting up and getting organised.Unfortunately Emmy is in season and was actually at the peak of her season on Sunday. She was a bit scatty to start with and had one spell where she was warning Claire that the judge looked a bit odd. Her lack of concentration led her making a mistake and she got eliminated but after that she settled down and did some brilliant work and ended up 5th and in the squad for the individual squad missing a place in the team by only 5 points. This is fantastic for such a young dog who missed a lot of her first competition season in agility last year due to injury and illness. Emmy being in season was a much bigger problem for Jet than it was for Emmy. The 3 hour journey in cage next to her had not been the best preparation and he was very distracted and not focused on working at all. It did not help that Mike has is team manager and has a lot to do during the selection. In the end they came a respectable 10th but only 8 dogs go plus 1 non travelling reserve.
The return journey was not easy as there was heavy traffic and it was dark with very heavy rain and spray the whole way. Mike and Claire got home very tired but excitedabout Claire and Emmy going to the world championships in Belgium with a really good team. Mike will also be going in his role as team manager.
6th Feb
February has started as usual with a promise of spring and gale force winds. There will most likely be more winter to come. It has been fairly dry here so we have been able to keep on with farm jobs with the dogs in attendance. We have a little patterdale x poodle on holiday with us and to our great surprise he and Rusty have instantly become great friends and love playing and ratting together. We have got some good training in including starting a new puppy class this week was just some of Ty and Tricky’s and a couple more from other litters are starting next week. It is such fun to work with such fantastic young puppies. On Sunday Helen and Claire went to the Kennel Club measuring training we hope to get their approval from the KC very soon and start measuring ready for this season. Jet and Emmy are looking very fit and have done some great work. So we were feeling confident for the BSD world championship selection next week unfortunately Emmy has just come into season. She is a bit tetchy with the other dogs and has to be kept away from the males and Jet is very easily distracted. Because of her problems with infection last time she was in season she is on antibiotics as a precaution. Hopefully there will not be any problems beacause if there are she will most likely need to be spayed. If there are not any problems we would like to breed from her and Jet on her next season and then she will be spayed.
Diamond Diary
31st Jan
Where has January gone, we have been so busy it has just flown by. It has been very cold and so dry we are now having a winter drought. On one hand it is still a problem feeding and watering the horses and sheep, but it means we can get on with lots of winter jobs. Mike has been pruning the trees in the orchard, the dogs love playing there while we are working. We have also been able to fit in some good training with our dogs and in classes. The people who braved the cold really enjoyed them. Claire is very excited about working Ty in grade 7 this season and is looking through schedules for championship classes. The schedules for this year are starting to come out and we are looking forward to this season’s agility more than ever.
Feedback from the puppy’s new owners has been fantastic we are so pleased they are all settling in well. Flake is has fitted in here quite naturally and is proving to be quite a character her latest game is collecting things from around the house and putting them on a dog bed.
Dee’s training is coming on just right, she is now 11 months old and we will be starting more serious training soon, she shows a lot of potential as a sheepdog and an agility dog, her general obedience is improving all the time and it is getting easier to call her away from the sheep. She is such a bubbly friendly little dog she is a joy to train or just be with.
We have been doing more grid work than usual this winter and it is noticeable what a difference it is making particularly with Jet. He is getting more athletic and can turn, and shorten and lengthen his stride a lot better. It has also been useful building up Holly’s fitness. Emmy is looking very fit and powerful so we are looking forward to the BSD world championship selection in a couple of weeks. Rusty is coming back into training after a winter break and is the same as ever. He can be brilliant but also frustratingly inconsistent. Will he get the grade 6 agility win he needs to join Ty in grade 7.
23rd Jan Quite an exciting week all the puppies have gone to their new homes. We are so pleased that they all have great agility homes. At least 3 will train with us regularly. We will see the others at shows except for Dot now called Tricks, who is going to New Zealand. Again to a great agility home and we will follow her adventures with great interest. Claire is keeping a red merle bitch called Flake. Something she has wanted for a long time. We are so grateful to Shirley for making it possible and to really make our week Shirley is letting us keep Tricky. She has settled in here so well we would have been very sad to see her go back. Claire made a rare trip to a winter show but it was worth it as Ty won grade 6 Agility and now will be able to compete in Grade 7 and Championship classes this season we are really looking forward to that. Mike stayed home and ran the classes which were very busy. We have had a dry cold week with a couple of heavy frosts which were great for tracking in the early morning. By late morning the sun came out and we have been able to get some very good agility training in. We were also able to get the puppies out playing in the winter sunshine it did them so much good and they loved it.
16th Jan
A really busy week, the weather has just about been good enough to get some decent training in but the fields are saturated. The puppies have been amazing time stealers but fascinating. So many innate behaviours are programmed to start at specific times in the dog’s life, but you can start to see individual characteristics develop by 7 weeks. We really cannot understand why it used to be that puppies went to their new owners at 12 weeks. Tricky keeps an eye them but really hasn’t been very involved with them since 5 weeks. The other dogs particularly Holly and Dee have been far more interested. They will be going to their new homes soon so we have getting them ready. We have been taking them out to the barn in a big run to give them the room to play, it is too cold for them there at night so in the evening we bring them back into the house. They have a pen there but we have got them used to different rooms. They have also spent some time in the different kennels, and visited friends and been to the school and shopping centre. We find this makes such a difference to having dogs that are totally relaxed in lots of different environments. Our older dogs training has really just been practice but with the classes we have started preparing for competition which is very exciting.
9th Jan
A strange sort of week the weather is still wintery with heavy rain but with enough good spells to get some training and farm jobs in. People are very keen to get training again and we have had some great competition sessions. A slight problem has been we have all had some kind of bug as usual Sara had it first so she probably brought it home from school. It wasn’t too serious but was not what we wanted with Claire at the WAO selection and Mike taking all the lessons. The lessons went ok but Claire struggled at the selection but found it a very useful experience.
The puppies were taken to have their eyes checked on Thursday. And really enjoyed the outing. As both parents are clear by DNA or examination and it goes back for generations we did not expect any problems and so it was not a surprise when they were all clear. We took the opportunity to talk to the eye specialist about the testing and it was interesting to find out how well the compulsory testing before breeding is working for ISDS dogs and if it were applied by the Kennel Club many breeds could clear of the known eye problems in a few years. That also applies to many other hereditary conditions. Of course non registered dogs would still carry them but we were very surprised to hear that there are still people who think it is OK to breed from KC registered dogs that carriers of genetic defects. If that were stopped the conditions would not exist in a couple of generations. If people will not do it voluntarily then the KC should enforce it like the ISDS.
2nd Jan 2011
A band of rain came through the day after Christmas and washed all the snow away just in time for the Diamond walk and dinner. We do the same thing every year but it works brilliantly, nice drink in the pub where we park the cars, walk on the Mendips and back for dinner, an almost secret Santa done very professionally by Will and his elf Sara, a very enjoyable day. It all works so smoothly with no hanging about or problems. The weather carried on to kind to us for the time of year and how had the rest of December has been. A lot of people who had time off from work came training so we had some very busy classes and some 1-2-1’s, it goes some way to making up for the extended break.
The young dogs that were in the puppy class are now 9-10 months and are starting to show their ability. They look to be a very impressive group of dogs, it is shame in some ways that they will not be able to compete until September but on the other hand they should be fantastic by 2012.
Tricky’s puppies are absolutely fantastic we are enjoying them so much, Tricky is not spending much time with them now but Aunty Dee is taking over much to our surprise and delight. We have had a constant stream of visitors to socialise them, and they have been going out to the barn to play. On a couple of exceptionally mild days they also had a run in the arena.
Claire is still training Ty for the WAO selection and we are training Jet and Emmy for the BSD world championship selection. All three are on great form but anything can happen on the day and we just hope they do well.
Holly is coming back into work, She has not forgotten anything and still has her amazing drive. It is proving difficult to bring her on slowly. She stunned us by doing a 1.8 sec dogwalk.
Dee is progressing very well with her basic training and agility, but her sheepdog work varies from day to day, she can be brilliant and then another time just wants to chase and will not listen.
28th December
We have had an extended Christmas break thanks to the extreme weather. It has been down to -8C at night and not got above zero during the day which is unheard of in this area as we are so close to the sea and the gulf stream. We have had the longest period of snow ever known here. One of the few good things to come from it was that Mike did an amazing track in the snow with Jet, it crossed the tracks of fox, badger, hare and deer and Jet did not pay them any attention. It has not been very good for the children or doing outside jobs as it has been so cold you can only sustain it for short periods. Perhaps if we were more used to these sort of conditions we would be better equipped and organised. The dogs have generally enjoyed the rest from training and just playing and walking in the snow. The puppies have coped very well with xmas and have been great fun, friends and people interested in having a puppy have started visiting which is great socialisation for them. We are very pleased with the way all the dogs have coped with these changes and the extra activity. Not having any training has worked so well we have loads of time for the puppies. We are now looking forward to a thaw and getting back to normal.
20th December
Other than the worst December weather for 100 years there is not a great deal to report. We can’t really say it’s quiet because although all dog training is stopped we are very busy, feeding horses, sheep and poultry is a lot harder, and the dogs still need exercise. All the outside water is frozen up so we have to take it from the house in buckets. Ty and particularly Dee have been really useful. The sheep find the most shelter at the far end of the orchard as far away from the house as they can get, we don’t want to carry feed down there so we put it down just into the field and send a dog to bring them up. As the sheep are getting the routine it is an easy job for Dee and is very confidence building for her. Her “that’ll do” is improving it takes a very stern command to stop her working the sheep followed up by a highly encouraging come, we then have to have a good grip on her or she will go back to them at the first opportunity. But it is improving all the time. Holly is a lot better and is extremely keen to get back work Claire has tried doing little bits but is hopeless in this terrible weather. The older dogs need a bit less stimulation and are coping lot better.
The puppies are fantastic they have moved out of the crate into a large pen. They are in our lounge, which is proving to be very convenient. We don’t have to keep going out to the kennels in this terrible weather, they are getting extremely well socialised and we are really enjoying it. A big surprise is that Dee and Holly are being fantastic Aunties and are cleaning and fussing with them while Tricky lies back and watches. The boys only show a little interest but it is all very harmonious.
12th December
We have had the worst winter weather in the 20 years we have been here. The ground has been frozen solid for most of the week. On Tuesday we were brushing the frost off the contact equipment and it was forming again straight away we have never seen that. We managed a bit of low level training Wednesday. Then on Friday we had a thaw the snow and frost cleared but surprisingly the Rhynes are very low there has not been that much precipitation and what there has been is still locked up in frozen ground. We did some really good training on Saturday and Sunday. But the forecast is not looking very good.
Our dogs are doing very well, with the ground frozen dry we are able to give them good walks from the farm. Mud is usually the problem we have here in the winter and is sometimes so bad it stops us walking the dogs here and we have to take them to the Mendips or the coast.
We have not done much training with them but what we have has been very good. Holly is starting to take more exercise and has started low grid work.
Dee continues to impress it is hard to tell if she will be a great sheep dog or agility champ or maybe the first to be both. She looks so small and sweet you would not think she would have such amazing drive.
The puppies are fantastic we wish we could have litters more often but it not practical. We will have to start a puppy blog now they are starting to develop.
6th December
We are having exceptionally wintery weather especially for the time of year. Most of the country is getting it far worse than us. That is usually the case we are very fortunate here that we are sheltered on 3 sides by hills and the gulf stream funnels up the Bristol channel keeping it much milder here than elsewhere. This last week we have been unusually experiencing constant sub zero temperatures, frosts, freezing northerly winds, and snow. We have managed to do a little training but we were very restricted in what we could do. The biggest problem has been ona couple of days we have had a little bit of thawing at midday and as soon as the sun has started to go down it has frozen again making parts of the track and arena like an ice rink. We have also had problems with burst pipes which means some water is turned off and we have to supply the animals with buckets. That will not sorted out until the weather changes completely and the pipes are fixed. We have also had problems with the van and land rover not starting thankfully Claire’s little Peugeot has not had any problems
We were very disappointed that the WAO selection was cancelled we were really looking forward to it. But the organisers made the right decision it would be very difficult for most people and impossible for some to get here and it would have been terrible if someone had an accident.
In the end it has worked out quite well giving us more time for the puppies, they are absolutely stunning. Tricky is turning out to be the perfect mother. She looks after them brilliantly but is not over protective coping very well with all the coming and goings here. Claire has put lots of pictures of them on facebook and we will try to get some on the website 28th November
What a week on Tuesday we harvested the last of the apples just in the nick of time before Thatcher’s close for the season. If they hadn’t got in and time we would try to salvage something by making as much cider from them as possible. As there were almost 13 tons we could not have managed it all. That would be 10 times more than we need for personal use and we are not set up for commercial sales. The apples are harvested with a big machine that whips round and does the whole 5 acres in a short day, not a bit like the Magners advert. The weather while we were harvesting was glorious, cold but sunny and bright. Who would have guessed that by weekend there would be snow frost and freezing northerly winds. At least the fields are dry and we can work the dogs on them. Mike took Jet to open the gate for the apple collectors who come in through the field where we had done the tracking workshop the previous Sunday. On the way back Jet free tracked back from the end of the pursuit track to the beginning and found quite a lot of small treats that had been missed, quite amazing that it was 48 hours after it had been laid. It is fascinating that tracking is one of the dog activities that they can do perfectly well without our interfering we just have to make it worthwhile for them to track what we want them to. Another is herding and we have had a great example of that this week. The sheep are tidying up with the ponies in the Orchard now, but we feed them closer to the house and yard. In a couple of days Dee has learnt on her own to go and get them, avoiding the ponies and “looking back” for any strays, she doesn’t take any nonsense from the stroppy old ewes that frustrate Ty. That is because she has been allowed to learn naturally whereas with Ty we used too much training and control. He is great agility dog and maybe Dee never will be because of this, and possibly it will mean she couldn’t be a trials dog either, but what a joy to see a little dog working so naturally and enthusiastically.
We are very pleased that she is developing into a good sheepdog as we think we have an exciting development coming together on the herding front. In conjunction with “allaboutsheepdogs” and a local farm that opens to the public we are forming a herding centre where people can train and practise herding with their dogs. Not for farmers and shepherds or sheepdog trials, although we can help people who want to go in that direction, but for people who just want to do it for the fun of it.
We actually had a day off on Friday. It was always in our plan that Friday would be get free but in practice we nearly always get a couple of phone calls on early in week for emergency problems dogs and the only time we can see them is on Friday. That didn’t happen this week for the first time in months. It was just as well because the weather was appalling turning intoa real blizzard in the evening. We had to cancel training on Saturday which worked out quite well as very convenient Tricky had her puppies. It was a bit of a marathon starting lunchtime and finishing in the early hours of Sunday morning, 8 stunning healthy puppies, 3 red merles, 1 blue merle, 2 red and white and 2 black white all beautifully marked.
On Sunday classes were almost back to normal with most people coming training including a agility competition workshop in the afternoon. The completion to a very tiring but satisfying few days.
21 November
It is been very wintery this week, very cold with wind, rain and frost. We have had a few relatives visit from Australia. We don’t know why they come this time off year they must be glad to get back. We have managed to fit in some good dog training agility, herding, tracking and searching. Tricky is huge we can’t believe she is not due for another two weeks. Claire has moved her into a crate in her room so she can keep an eye on her. She has taken very well to being in the house she is such a sweet dog. The crate was there for Holly while she was convalescing she has now moved out into the lounge with the oldies Tip and Dash. She has really settled down and is very calm. She can run free in the paddock now for short spells and we will be building up her strength and fitness now. It has been so cold we have let Jet, Ty and Emmy in the house for short periods while we groom them and check them over but they really cannot cope with it. Jet and TY particularly get too hot very quickly. They have a magnificent coats now.
Dee is suddenly maturing and has done some amazing work with the sheep. They had been quite difficult but we have been using Jet to hold them back while we put their food down. We have also used him when moving them and penning them for checking. It has made them more compliant. Dee has been circling and balancing them quite nicely and on Wednesday fetched them the length of the field and drove them back again. On Friday Mike was sorting out the pen and had taken Dee to hold them back, she slipped her line and ran behind them half of them went straight into the pen thinking their food was there. The others were hanging back but Dee pushed them up and into the pen. A great result. Her agility and general training is also very good and it is hard to tell what she will be best at.
Claire is working with Ty getting ready for the WAO selection he is on fantastic form and we are hoping they do themselves justice at the selection. There are some extremely good dogs and handlers taking part so it will be a fascinating competition.
Emmy is mostly getting more impressive with every training session, but every now and then something triggers a scatty spell, and we just have to stop while she settles and gets her focus back.
Rusty is having a bit of a rest while we focus on the other dogs, he lives in the house and has been very good with the new company. He has also been exceptionally good when we have been out walking staying close and coming straight back from hunting when called perhaps he has grown up. He is still a terrier though and tried to have a go at Ty when it got too exciting when Helen was collecting Daisy and Taz from a short stay. Rusty just got a mothful of Ty's ruff, Ty got hold of Rusty by the scruff and couldn’t work out what to do next. We soon had them separated and there were no injuries other than bruised egos.
On Sunday afternoon we had a Tracking and Searching workshop it was really good fun and so good to be just doing something with the dogs that was just for its own sake and not with the idea of a competition or test in mind. Perhaps a lot more dog training should be like that.
14November
This week we have had storms, heavy rain, sleet, frost and freezing fog amazingly we have had nice weather on our main training days and we have been quite busy. On Saturday Claire took a bit of a risk and went to Dartmoor show and it turned out to be not too bad but very muddy. It was worthwhile as Ty did a fantastic jumping round to win G6 jumping, he was also faster than the G7 dogs on the same course. He only needs one agility win to get into G7. Emmy also did well getting 5th in G3 jumping. Agility did not go quite so well.
Claire got back just in time to get to the Diamond party. This was to thank the people especially the friends and family who don’t run dogs for helping making Diamond show such a success. We had a barn dance in a local village hall and it was a great success everyone dressed the part and entered into the spirit of it. Hazel did some fantastic food including a great diamond cake covered in agility equipment. A thoroughly good time was had by all. Sunday classes went surprisingly well under the circumstances proof there had been plenty of dancing and not too much drinking.
Our dogs are all well. You can now feel Tricky’s puppies moving, and she seems in very good condition. We saw Rupert this week. He is one of Ty and Honey’s puppies we don’t see very often. He is an absolutely stunning red merle, he is a strapping big athletic lad but very quiet and confident. We hope Tricky’s pups are as nice. Holly is now allowed a little more freedom and we will be starting to slowly build up her fitness with exercises and help from the smart clinic. Her behaviour is now totally changed she is much calmer and confident around the house and farm. She did get a bit excited by seeing another dog at the smart clinic so there will need to be some re-socialisation.
Dee is maturing and is coping with more demanding training in short bursts. She is very well behaved around the sheep on a long lead and will down, stop and call away nicely. We will move to a lighter longer line soon. Her agility foundation and general training is going extremely well. Sara did a very impressive stop and down on recall with her on Sunday.
7th Nov
After taking Tricky to the vet last week to check if she is in pup because of what happened last time, it is now very obvious that she is. She has suddenly got huge, she is not due until December so itcould be there will be a lot of puppies.
Emmy has been a star this weekend, we went to the selection day for the BSD world championships on Sunday and she was on great form. Lee Gibson had set very long and extremely challenging FCI type course and she came 1st in one agility round and 2nd in the other. Her speed on the jumping courses caught Claire out and she made a couple of errors. Mike and Jet had a few problems but still managed to get some places. It has to be confirmed because of the way points are allocated and a problem with the spreadsheet but we think that Emmy is lying third and Jet is 10th. There is another selection day in February and we know what we need to work on so we are hopeful of getting in the team. It presents a problem with Emmy. She is due in season in December and it is the only opportunity to breed from her because of the infection last time. Really it is out of our hands we will have to go with whatever happens.
Dee’s training is wonderful, after the escapade at the sheepdog training we have been working on her recall, in a couple of sessions it has gone from good to brilliant, we will keep working on it and then start doing it gradually closer to the sheep. It is getting difficult to finds enough agility foundation training to keep her enthusiastic so we have tried some other exercises, her positions are quite good close up so we are working on doing them further away, she was doing a fairly good retrieve but liked to run about with the article, or drop it a few feet away and wait for it to be thrown, a couple of sessions and it is almost sorted out. Most importantly training her is just so much fun.
Training classes have been a bit busier now half term is over, but we have had to work around very changeable weather. We are fortunate that we can be flexible. That is the big advantage of having our own place to train. If people can’t train one day they can train another.
We have had a couple of Drama’s Sara broke her arm at School playing on the Monkey bars . This is the second time last time she fell off the dog walk while we weren’t looking. And the land rover has a broken cam belt, Glenda also had an hospital appointment and both time Claire was away training with her car so they had to go to hospital in the dog van. It is a b to park in town but it is amusing to see people suddenly putting their dogs on leads when we drive by.
31st October
A bit of a strange week we have had some mornings when you think it is time to unpack the thermal’s , and then in the afternoon we are working in t shirts. It was half term and Glenda and Sara have had a fantastic time in Tenerife with Nan, we have missed them but it has been pleasantly peaceful. As some people have been on holiday classes had been fairly quiet but we have had an increase in the number of dogs with problems we have seen. Fortunately the dogs problems have been having owners with not enough experience for the type of dog they have and it has been fairly straightforward get them on right path. Then the weekend has been really hectic. Glenda and Sara got home 2.30am Saturday morning, then we had normal agility classes Saturday morning, Claire had some private agility lesson Saturday afternoon, and Mike had an introduction to Working Trials workshop, which was great fun, then Saturday evening Claire and Mike took Emmy and Jet to FCI training for the BSD world championship at Andy and Helen Browns in Worcester we had a great session and then a lovely meal in the pub after, but got home quite late. Sunday morning Claire took classes while Mike and Sara took Dee training at Somerset Sheepdog Society. The land rover broke down on way making everything late but a swap to the dog van got us there for most of it. You could see the old hands were a bit sceptical of the little red bitch but in the end her drive and enthusiasm caught everyone out. In hindsight it was a mistake to let the sheep out of the pen and her off the long line. We got her back after she had scattered the sheep to all corners and chased a hare. We got back just in time for the end of the puppy class and the afternoon competition group.
It has been confirmed Tricky is having puppies but Emmy isn’t in season just losing her coat and being moody.
Holly is raring to go but still has a couple of weeks on lead rest.
Ty is on fantastic form and we are really looking forward to world champ selection with him.
Jet and Emmy have their world champ selection on Sunday.
24th October
Apart for a few heavy showers it has been a great week for dog training. Sunny but not too hot and there have been a couple of frosty mornings ideal for tracking. So we have had very enjoyable and productive lessons.
The forage maize in the fields around us has been cut so that means we can walk the dogs through them and onto the moor. Holly has come with us but on the lead still. Dee is also on a long lead as she will take any opportunity to round up the sheep, and does not have a good enough “that’ll do” yet. It is surprising she is so keen with them as they are terrible for training dogs. A few old ewes are standing up to the dogs and a few younger ones are scattering and the rest mess about in between. Ty is totally fed up with them and we have to use Jet and Emmy when we have to do real work with them rather than training. Jet is great at holding them back when we are putting their food out, and will also gather and drive. Emmy is almost collie like in the way she works them. Being Belgian Shepherd Dogs they are much more upright and imposing. The collie crouch and eye is having less and less effect on them.
The sheep have been good for stock socialisation and for working with some dogs with chasing problems and that is probably all we will use them now.
There are indications that Emmy is coming into season, fuzzy coat, moody, dogs showing interest but it would be too soon after her last season. So we are not sure. It also looks like Tricky is in pup but then she did last time, let’s hope it is not another phantom, she is seeing the vet on Friday.
The down side of the forage maize being cut is that all the wildlife that lived in it is now looking for somewhere else. Jet and Ty have definitely been on a BARF diet of fresh rabbit, and most likely the other dogs have as well. Rusty has been ratting every night and morning, fortunately he will not eat or retrieve them.
We are training quite hard for the time of year, because we have 2 world championship qualifiers coming up. Claire has been training with Dave Munnings and Natasha Wise and Ty is on great form. Emmy is a bit variable sometimes brilliant sometimes distracted, it will be good that the season issue will be resolved before next year, because she had an infection during her last season, she will either have a litter and then be spayed or if there is any sign of infection again spayed anyway. Jet is working very well practising on FCI type courses.
18th October
What a lot you can get done when you are not going to shows or instructing in the evenings. We are catching up with loads of outside jobs but we are waiting for some bad weather to catch up with admin. Can’t complain though the weather has been great for the time of year and we have got lots of great training in with our dogs and also with the classes and individual lessons.
Holly is really well she has put on some weight which she needed and she is really keen to do something active, Claire is doing physio exercises with her and trying to keep her mentally stimulated but it is not enough for such an active dog.
Jet, Emmy and Ty have world championship qualifiers coming up so we have been training on some WC courses we have found on the web and they have done some outstanding work. Even if they don’t qualify it will be great preparation for next year.
Dee is a little star she is relly fun to train and she can do anything we ask her to with only a little direction. It is really hard not to do too much with her. She is almost 7months old now and only just out of medium height she is not likely to big a big dog but she is very athletic so it should not be a problem.
Rusty carries on being Rusty mixing, agility and ratting and having a good life.
A few of the Diamond crew went to a new show at Monmouth and seemed to have had a good day. Lynn and Lexie did very well winning a grade 4 jumping.
10th October
The last week is the closest we have to a week off. We are changing over from summer to winter training so there were no evening agility classes during the week. We still had some agility 1-2-1’s and dogs with problems, and we have our own dogs to train and keep fit. On Friday it was so hot in the afternoon we couldn’t train but the promised hot weekend didn’t materialise. It stayed dry if cloudy for the return to weekend training. The beginner classes got off to a slow start which was nice for the few new people. The competition classes were all busy with both Mike and Claire instructing. The puppy foundation class was good fun as usual. Most of them are now like small dogs rather than puppies and coming on with amazing confidence. Mike had an introduction to sheepdog training on Saturday afternoon. The sheep were so difficult we will not be able to use them for sheepdog training any more but they were ideal for the stock socialisation workshop on Sunday.
It seems this year has flown by at our agility club meeting we were organising our first club social night, and the Christmas walk and dinner, our second weekend show and our club holiday for 2011.
3rd October
Holly’s recovery continues to be miraculous. She would have a go at agility if we let her. However she is on lots of short lead walks for another 5 weeks. Tricky has come into season and she has been enjoying a good time with Ty so hopefully there will be puppies in due course. All the other dogs are keeping well and are in light training. Jet is having a bit of a rest before starting FCI training for the BSD world championship selection. For the others at this time of year we go back to basics. There is a bit of work to be done with the sheep so Ty has some practice with herding. Dash at 15 is now fully retired from herding work but it looks like Dee will be ready to take her place in a year. She certainly has the right attitude and drive.
It has been an odd week with classes, one day it has been sunny and the next we have heavy rain we have been busy on the good days and quiet the others. Friday was really bad so we mostly stayed in and pretended to catch up with paperwork but really we were watching the FCI world championships on the web, and we spent most of Saturday and Sunday evening catching up with it. Natasha and Dizzy were fantastic winning for a second year and Dave and Dobbie were a very good second but looking at the opposition and the way agility is developing in other counties we are going to have take a good look at British training and coaching in future years.
At the weekend we had a very enjoyable instructors course, the weather forecast was for good weather Saturday and a storm Sunday morning so we turned the course around and did the practical handling on Saturday, the Theory Sunday morning during the bad weather and starting equipment Sunday afternoon. We have never done it that way before but it worked quite well.
We were a bit disappointed that there were some last minute cancellations particularly as we had put this course on in response to requests from people who could not make other courses this year. Perhaps we should increase the deposit.
Amazingly other the weekend there were 5 more enquiry’s for the instructors course. So we already planning the next one for March 2011.
26th September
First of all Holly is making an amazing recovery. We are really pleased. She has had a few trips to the vet for checking and dressing changes and now the stitches are out. The wound looks very clean and there are only a couple of sores where the bandages have rubbed. She is starting to use the leg and we will have to keep her sensible.
It has been an incredibly busy week, it started really hot for the time of year and ended really cold for the time of year with only a few showers. Classes, 1-2-1, and problem dogs keep us busy and we have loads of farm jobs in the autumn but the days are steadily getting shorter. We are looking into finding an indoor venue but we could end up working 20 hours a day.
On Tuesday we went on a long coast walk this time in good weather and a low tide, it was not so exciting but very enjoyable. Tricky is coming in season so we thought it best that we did not take her. We really missed her as we lost Rusty in the undergrowth several times and did not have her to tell us where he was. He is much better these days he always knows where we are and finds us but it is nerve racking not knowing exactly where he is.
On Friday we had a Dave Munnings training day. This is usually our day off but it was worth giving it up for a really good days training. We had good groups of dogs and people and it was good fun as well as getting in good work.
It was great preparation for Claire and Ty for the CSJ final on Saturday. It is a really good event at the Malvern Show and a was very enjoyable change from normal competitions. Claire trained in the warm up event as did most of the experienced competitors and came a reasonable fifth, she went for it in the final, an unlucky spin in front of a tunnel trap cost them a split second and they came third. Still a great achievement in a very competitive national final.
On Sunday we went to Honiton show. We have very mixed feelings about this show. It is our last show of the season which on one hand makes us feel a bit sad but we have done shows almost every weekend for six months and the dogs and us are a bit jaded. The venue isn’t bad but it isn’t great either, we were not up on the hill this year so at least the rings were level but down by the river it is a frost hollow and the rings were not safe until the sun came out and cleared the frost and dried the grass. The classes were not that good and the show was run just ok. But we had a really good social time with lots of our friends. Emmy seems to have settled down and worked well Claire held her contacts and she still came tenth, Mike just trained jet in 2 classes and Sara had a go with him in Juniors and ABC. Rusty managed a fourth in C6,7 jumping but had a weave fault in the EO agility. Claire pushed Ty too hard in his clases trying to get to G7 and made some errors.
All in all we are quite glad it is the end of the season and we are looking forward to a rest but it will not be long before we are looking forward to next season.
We are now getting ready for winter training and workshops.
19th September
What a roller coaster of a week. Monday was ok decent weather, Mike saw a couple of problem dogs, Claire had a couple of agility lessons, and we had 2 really good classes in the evening. They were both at 6pm as it is getting dark early now but they worked well.
On Tuesday morning we wanted to take our dogs for long walk. The main road in Yatton is closed and the traffic is being managed very badly. That is our route to the Mendips so instead we went for a coast walk, as it was a bit last minute we had not planned it well and we were there at high tide in a gale. The dogs loved it. We have noticed that Tricky is fascinated by Rusty. On this walk there were lots of holes and undergrowth for Rusty to explore but we always knew where he was because Tricky was there. Claire checked with Shirley and she confirmed Tricky learned this with her terriers and she was waiting for him to flush something out for her. The weather stayed bad and only a few dedicated people tuned up for the evening class which turned out to be very good.
Wednesday started well, we were back to good weather and busy classes, but a disaster occurred which cast a shadow over the next few days. Holly broke her leg trying to climb out of the kennels. We were devastated and thought it might be the end for her. We had her with Sue our vet within 15minutes and she did wonderful job of making her comfortable and arranged for specialist surgeon to operate on her first thing the next morning. All the vet staff and friends who had similar experiences were confident about the outcome, but in the considerable time we have had dogs we have never had this happen and we were very worried. The surgery went well and Holly is making a rapid recovery she is on 10 days complete rest and 6 weeks lead walking only. That is going to be difficult for her.
On Saturday we did a Demo at the festival on Clevedon seafront it was a great day. We were relieved that it was looking good for Holly and we had sunny weather and a good atmosphere with music, dancing, and the usual stalls. We had the main arena for 4 hours and we used it for a mixture of training and demonstration that worked very well.
On Sunday we went to Blackdown show and it turned out to be a remarkable day. It was really good show with some great classes, it was cold and overcast most of the day but thankfully it stayed dry.
It was Jets day to shine, his first run in G 4,5 agility was good but he brushed a pole, next was fairly straight forward G 4.5 jumping jet ran it well but we did not think he was fast enough however he came second, onto a very technical and fast g 5-7 jumping,Jet won it by a clear second. He had a rest before the G 5-7 agility this was a fast course with just a couple of handling points so we did not think Jet would be fast enough as there were some very experience teams. So were surprised to find he had won it. Jet will be in G6 season lets hope he can continue to improve.
Ty started in G6,7 where a weave entry cost him 5 faults, his next run was in the complicated G5-7 jumping where in spite of a unusual route that had the judge laughing, he came 4th. On to the G5-7 agility where he put in a powerful performance for well deserved win. It was much later in the day when had to do the G6,7 agility he really flew around with only a slight deviation which put him into narrowly into second place.
Rusty worked well but just had a fault in each class, Emmy was miss inconsistent getting an 8th in her first jumping class but then getting more excited and inaccurate in each class. Lets hope she settles down for next season.
There were a few of the diamond crew there making for an enjoyable day. Most remarkable were Jo Clark and Boot who at their very first agility competition won G1 agility. Jan and Ruby won g5 jumping and Lyn and Lexie got 2 third places in g4 making a total of 6 in 3 shows.
We returned home tired but very satisfied and hoping for a better coming week.
12th September
Hooray the right brackets have finally come for the Kennels. They went together fairly easily so the dogs have 3 big kennels in the barn where they can move around easily and we have the 2 originals just outside the house that are bit more snug and easy for us to monitor. We will now be kitting out the new kennels but the dogs are already very happy with them. They still come in the house but we have somewhere secure for them when we are busy and we can have space in the house when we need it.
It has started getting dark at around 8pm now and although we can use floodlights it is not ideal so we are gradually moving the evening classes earlier and in Oct we will change to Saturday and Sunday, We have been looking at indoor venues but we are not very hopeful that we will find anything suitable. The ones we have looked at all have restrictions and owners have unrealistic ideas what people will pay.
All the dogs were fit for Chippenham championship show, it was a very enjoyable and well run show. It does cater more for the higher grade dogs and it is very tough to do well with all the senior handlers there with for the qualifiers and also having their new dogs.
Jet was on very good form getting 5 out of 5 clear rounds his places were 6th in both G5 agility, 7th & 9th in G5 Jumping and 23rd in C3,4,5. It means he joins Rusty with Agility Warrant Silver.
Emmy did a good G3 jumping round getting 16th but then went a bit soppy again and seems to want to just play and is focused on Claire rather than equipment, perhaps she will settle down when she is spayed.
We were pleased with Holly she did 4 runs and was focused on Claire the whole even with a couple of dogs lunging and barking at the ringside, she made a few mistakes mostly with weaves and looking back.
Rusty was back to terrier mode and Claire is finding it a bit difficult concentrating on him with 4 other dogs to run, She is going to have to let Mike or Sara work one next season.
Ty was just shade short of brilliant he just made a little mistake in each run. They should be get used to the grade 6 and 7 classes next season.
5th September
What a fantastic week the weather has been glorious, sunny light breezes but not too hot ideal for dog training and working around the farm. All the dogs are fit and sound even Jet who was on light duties until Saturday. The only problem has been the correct brackets for kennels have still not come from Tolvi. Fourth time lucky. So after a great week Claire Sara and most of the Diamond crew camped at the Prestbury show at Cirencester park where they had a marvellous time.
On Saturday Mike and Glenda took Jet to the Olympia qualifying semi finals at the City of Birmingham show. I was a good day out. It is really good venue and show for such an important event and Dave Ray and his hard working team do a good job and they were all very friendly and helpful even though they must have been exhausted.
It would have been a tall order for Mike and Jet even if they had been able to practice in the previous weeks. Out of 100 dogs only 10 qualify. They were 48th to go and at that point a clear round in better than 36 second was needed to qualify. Gill with Check and Michelle and Jive had just run in 39 seconds Jet is usually at around the same time as them. So knowing something exceptional was needed Mike pushed really hard unfortunately Jet went to a tunnel trap that caught out many of the teams trying to do the same thing. So many courses in normal competitions involve powering onto tunnels Jet thinks it is the normal thing. This is the first time it has been run in this format and are some issues to be ironed out but is was a good experience.
On Sunday Mike, Glenda and Jet joined the others at prestbury park unfortunately the weather broke but Mike and managed an early run in G5 jumping before it got to wet and guess what you had to send on to tunnels 3 times. Jet worked brilliantly coming 10th. Just 2 seconds behind the winners. There was a long break for them until the g5 agility a very challenging course with just two sending on to tunnels Jet came 6th. Hopefully they can get back into training and do even better as the season comes to an end.
The rest of the Diamond crew did very well
Best of all Helen won g2 jumping by 3 seconds a very nice birthday present from Daisy
Phil and Dylan got 6th in C1&2 Agility
Rachel and Flint got 17th in C1&2 Agility and several clear rounds.
Claire and Ty got 10th in g6 agility
Claire and Holly 4th in g3 jumping
Claire and Rusty were on great form getting 2nd in C5-7 Jumping,4th C6-7 Jumping, & 3rd in C4-7.
29th August
This week started warm windy and wet and ended cold windy and wet, We have had some heavy storms and with some sunny spells. Fortunately the ground is so dry that it is draining quickly, and at least the grass is growing. In between the storms we continue to be busy with lessons and Mike has seen more problem dogs which can be done in the barn. We tried assembling the Kennels but could not work out how they were supposed to fit together. After many attempts to contactTolvi we finally found out there was a short shipment of most of the brackets, “didn’t any one tell you” was the closest to an apology. They are supposed to be here by Saturday but we have no faith in them. One kennel has been bodged together with the brackets we have been sent and some we made up and it looks very good. The non slip paint has worked well on the contact equipment and we found some paint cleaner with xylene in it but it was too late to save the brushes.
We took Emmy to the vet, where she had a few tests, but there was no confirmation of any infection, season or injury.Jet has an injury to his front left leg it is tiny but he will not put his foot down. Unfortunately this happened Friday night so it will be Tuesday before he can go to the vet if he needs to. Mike really wanted the practice this weekend for the ABC semi final next weekend.
We went to the Dordale show for the first time in years, we can’t remember why we stopped going. It was OK not bad but not brilliant either, The ring layout was not very good with most of them in rows against each other with the access facing each other so it was crowded and there was nowhere to watch from without getting in the way. Emmy was the first dog in her agility the number had been left in front of the weaves which put her off. She got a re-run but the moment and concentration was lost. She settled down and worked well in the G£ jumping and came second. She is having problems staying focused. Things gradually got worse there was some very heavy rain showers and the fairly long grass became greasy. Holly had just one G3 jumping round run as we were not sure how she would be working when we did the entries. It was quite a technical course and it was one of the few rings with people and dogs on all 4 sides and with just ropes not netting but she worked very well just turning to look at Claire before a tunnel and getting a refusal. Claire and Ty worked agility and jumping in a terrible downpour they both slipped a couple of times. They were still fast but picked up faults. Rusty did not want to play at all. We had finished all the runs except one of Rusty’s by 2 pm and we would have had to wait another 2 hours for him and then it was not likely he would work unless conditions improved. We had been soaked 3 times and we were down to our last dry(ish) cloths. So we went home where there was bright warm sunshine for the rest of the day.
22nd August
We have had a very hectic week. Monday and Tuesday were very busy with lessons, and Mik e finished the base for our new kennels. We had hoped to get to Priddy Fair on Wednesday. Sara has never been and it would be a good day out, Wednesday morning classes were busy and we were told that the new Kennels would be delivered between 9am and 5pm. So we kept the afternoon free and just trained out own dogs. Mike did a bit of sheepdog training with Ty in preparation for our autumn workshops when he got back he found that the ISDS membership badge had fallen off the whistle lanyard. So he got Jet out put a tracking harness on him and did a tack back to find it. So all this training has some practical application. At 4.30 there was no sign of the Kennels so we chased up Tolvi the suppliers they had no idea. Thursday morning was really busy with problem dogs and agility 1-2-1’s and there was a call from Tolvi the pallet with the kennels on had broken in the transport companies warehouse and they had to repair it so they would be at least a day late, and they had not bothered to tell anyone. Mid morning a huge lorry arrives jams up the traffic while the driver asks where is out forklift, no we don’t have one, it wouldn’t make any difference anyway as they are at the front of the lorry and we would have to take of several other loads, and we can’t stop our lessons to help unload that why we kept Wednesday afternoon free. He went off to deliver the other loads and returned late afternoon and we unloaded them by hand. They are in flat pack form 13 2m square panels not an easy job but the 4 of us managed it - just. It then started to rain just as the evening classes started, and yes a good number of hardy people trained and we had pretty good sessions. On Friday morning we had a good look the kennels and realised 7 panels needed painting we had missed that in the fine print. They were painted in the brochure. Both sides meant 56 sq m. And the paint for the contact equipment also arrived after being on order for weeks so the next two days were mostly spent painting. By Saturday evening the Kennels panels look very smart, and so does the contact equipment. We have used Protek it has tiny rubber particles in it and dries quite quickly to hard none slip finish. The only thing that can remove it is Xylene. We wish they had mentioned that when we ordered it all out brushes and the roller are solid.
OnSunday we had a day out to the Cornwall show. It was great nice and small well run, plenty of parking space and room to walk and train the dogs. The downside was we had to get up 5 as Ty had an early run in the Combined 6,& 7 Jumping. It was foggy and very wet when we arrived so Claire had to careful not to push Ty too hard and risk injury. She got it just right winning the class. The day warmed up quickly and the fog cleared. Ty unfortunately had the first pole down in the Agility and then it was just a training round.Rusty’s early jumping round was bit odd, it was clear but he kept making detours to check out something in the score tent. You can’t away with that up against G7 dogs. Holly did her very first agility round and was foot perfect leading the class for most of the time finally coming second to Sally Jones new youngster. She got a bit exciied in the jumping just getting faster so Claire took her own line and came out. Mike has not worked Jet for several weeks for various reasons and it has been done by Claire and Sara and it told, he responded to Mike’s movement when weaving and missed the last pole then continued to do a great run. In the steeple chase he caught Mike out with his speed of the startline and they got eliminated and continued to have a fun run. On the plus side the start could where we can get the extra couple of seconds we need. They finally synchronised in the agility and did a really good round on a tricky course unfortunately Jet just clipped a pole off.
Emmy was not quite right and went under a couple of jumps and acted a bit strangley, it could be her old injury, or the infection returning or even an approaching season. We could be at the vets again soon.
Rusty’s last run was in combined 6&7 agility right at the end of the show he was very settled by now and flew round to win it. He now just needs 1 win to go grade 7 and he has enough points for his silver warrant.
Dee had a lovely day socialising and even did some basic training.
In all it was worth the long journey but we will not be doing it very often.
Chris and John Lowe were also there and Nellie did a very impressive sending on and layering to come third in the steeplechase.
16th August
What a strange week. We have been very busy much more than is usual for this time of year. Perhaps people are not going away on holiday so much this year. Mike and Claire were planning to going to the KC festival but Glenda had a hospital appointment on Friday and there is the problem of leaving her on her own so Claire went on her own. Claire had a good if very tiring time working 4 dogs, she slept in the van which made camping easy for her . She came home with a good batch of rosettes and a third place trophy for Rusty. Best of all she won the best BSD in the Novice Tournament with Emmy. This is only her second show since Easter and is a good indication she has recovered from her injury and illness. Mike took Glenda for her hospital appointment which was surprisingly short. Sara was with them so they had a day out in Weston. This is something we do very rarely there were some very pleasant bits like the water park and the big wheel but the whole place is a huge building site. It all added to the surreal feeling of the weekend. On Saturday did some farm jobs and tried to tidy the garden while getting regular updates on the dogs progress from Claire. Bekki came down and rode Flame with Sara and we took the opportunity to socialise Dee she was very good not interested in chasing at all. Having more time than usual Mike and Sara did quite a lot of work with Dee as well as the usualpuppy foundation she did a very good track and a brilliant search finding Sara hidden in the dried out and overgrown wildlife pond.
On Sunday Sara persuaded her Nan to take her back to the water park in Weston where they stayed all day. So except when Helen and Bekki came down to ride Flame again it was very quiet for Mike and Glenda again this very unusual. Mike took the opportunity to try Dee on the sheep. She shows a lot of potential stalking and running after the sheep in just the right way for a puppy her age. She doesn’t have the power or speed to overtake and head them so we will not try her again until we have them in a round pen.
Claire got back before Sara and Nan all very tired but pleased and we rounded off the weekend with a roast lamb dinner with everything on the plate produced on the farm.
9th August
We had a fairly quiet day off Saturday just a couple of 1-2-1s and catching up on some jobs. Then Sunday we had a great day out at Chippenham Champ show. The conditions were perfect not too hot, cold, windy or wet. It was just as well as some of the classes ran painfully slowly. We are not sure why but the current expectation that people can train in the ring must have something to do with it. Also the classes were a bit quirky as they were worked around juniors and a champ class. Other than that it was well run and very enjoyable. Sara was first up with Jet at 9.00, she would have been on at 8.30m but the show was delayed due to an accident on the M4. That worked out for the best for Sara as we took Jet into the practice ring first and he was a bit fresh and took a while to settle down, he was ok for Sara’s run in the Junior agility and they did a brilliant clear run and ended up coming 3rd just behind two very good dogs with slightly older handlers. We are so pleased for her it is giving her so much confidence. Emmy did her first proper runs since Easter, her jumping was good with just a 5 in the weaves and in theG3 agility she did a fantastic clear to come third. Claire claims she would have come first if Mike had been in a better place to film it. Holly also had a test run in a jumping class and had few faults but at least it wasn’t a disaster. Mike worked Jet in G5 Jumping and Agility and came 8th in both. Rusty only had one class and had just had just 5 faults in the weaves. Ty was on early in the G6 Jumping and was far too fresh and strong and could not be pulled of a tunnel. He was much better in the G6 agility Claire just misstimed a pull through and flip and put him the wrong side of a jump for a refusal. There were some fantastic results Jan and Ruby won G4,5 agility and are now G5. Jan has been thinking of retiring Ruby because of her spaniel ways, and Ruby has decided to give up spaniel habits and concentrate on agility. Lynne and Lexie got third in G4 agility and Carol and Seiren got 15th in G3 jumping on a tricky course having just moved into that grade.
Dee enjoyed another day out gaining more admirers. We could have left fairly early in the afternoon but stayed on to watch the champ class which was very enjoyable so we were surprised there were not as many spectators as at other shows. We then took the dogs for a nice walk and were very surprised to see there was still one ring left running at 6pm.
6th August
Another surprisingly busy week we normally expect it to be a bit quieter as people go on holiday, but we have had some new people coming for agility classes, and a few more lovely puppies. We are also getting some more problem dogs. Mike is working with a couple of stock chasers and dog aggressive dogs and Claire is working with a couple of agility problems and competition coaching. In between we have been getting some stone in the barn to make a base for some new kennels. It is so easy to underestimate how much is needed we ordered 16 ton as it is the most cost effective quantity. About 12 went into the barn the rest we are using to fill in potholes in the track.
It looks like it was just a phantom pregnancy with Tricky we are disappointed but hope for better luck next time. She is still acting odd. She is doing a lot of digging and Ty and Dee have been helping her.
All the dogs have been working well in training. Sara is doing really good handling with Jet getting ready for Chippenham juniors class. She has also been practising tricks with Rusty. One of the good things about a small dog is you can do things with them in a small space when the weather is bad. We have been putting some work into a recall from chase with Dee because she has been circling Ty and Holly and starting to herd the Chickens. We have also started her with tracking. Progress had been slow with both but then suddenly she got the idea. She did a really good 20m track. So we released her and she ran off to the chickens. On recall she came straight back picked up the end of the track and back tracked. Apart from agility we are not sure what else to do with her. We like our dogs to be at least dual purpose and if they will do it we will try a bit of everything. We are going to try her on sheep in the next few weeks and see if she shows some interest. Ty, Emmy and Holly are on good form and we hope they are fit for Chippenham.
There have been some reports of kennel cough in the area, but it is only lasting a couple of days which does not sound like the kennel cough we are used to so we wonder if it is something else. We had some new hay of the field a few weeks ago and it is the worst for pollen dust we have ever had maybe because of the very dry weather or the time it was cut. We cannot walk past it without getting sneezes, when the horses are kept in the stables next to it they get mucky eyes and noses, and we have to keep the dogs away from it or they start sneezing as well. It makes us wonder if the reports of kennel cough are really something similar. There are also increasing reports of lungworm which is a worry but of course that would just continue getting worse until the dogs were treated with panacur.
1st August
We have had a very busy we week and then a fairly quiet weekend off. We would usually go to the agility club show but it is at Ardingly this year and as we found out at Easter it is just too far. Lets hope it is back to Newbury next year
Our classes were busy in spite of it being the start of the Holiday season and we had the second part of an instructors course on Thursday and Friday. It was the competition coaching and problem solving modules and the students dogs were great demonstrating all points we wanted to get across.
We had some lovely new puppies join the puppy class on Wednesday so we will have to have two groups soon. We are very pleased with the older puppies they look and behave so well.
Still no puppies from Tricky we have got the arithmetic or biology wrong somewhere. She does look and act very pregnant. Lets hope it is not a phantom.Emmy is steadiliy coming back into work and is loving it. Jet’s coat is coming out so Claire bathed and brushed him and he looks really smart. We are doing some grid work and contact training with him and Sara is getting ready to work him in juniors at Chippenham Championship show. Claire has also been working on tightening up Ty’s turns he is working very well. Dee’s puppy training is coming on we have been working on her recall as she has started to herd the chickens, her recall has been very good but she goes into a zone when she is in chicken dog mode.Rusty has been in the wars again and has a nasty cut on his chest we hope he is fit for Chippenham.
23rd July
We did get to Caerphilly as Tricky is hanging on to the puppies. Glenda and her mum were on puppy watch and Sara came with us. We are not sure about camping we had a nice time but the lack of sleep did not help our agility. It was a lovely show but by Sunday afternoon it was realy hot and we had lost the will to live. It is hard to sleep on the first night anyway but it was quite cold and then on Saturday it was warmer but there was a lot of noise searching for a lost dog, which set Welly off and then early Sunday there was a lot of traffic noise and seagulls raiding the bins. On the plus side Chris and Nellie won G6 jumping well done to them. Also Becky and her GSD Nellie did well getting a 10th place rosette. We think these little triumphs with dogs that are not natural agility stars are just as good as the big wins. We were also very pleased with Emmy who did her first show since being ill. Just an any size class each day. She loved it. On Saturday she came fourth and on Sunday it was a bit of a twisty course so Claire took her own line which was better for Emmy. Holly also did her very first run at a competition just a G3 jumping on Sunday after a couple of goes on the practice ring. Again Claire ended up taking her own line to reduce the risk of her leaving the ring but probably need not have as once she was working Claire had 100% attention. Queuing needs to be managed carefully. We were a bit concerned about some of the pitbull type dogs members of the public brought in Sunday afternoon. There were no incidents we were aware off but we did not want Holly mixing it with one of them. Rusty and Jet worked well but were caught in the small class size trap being just out of the awards. This led to Mike pushing Jet on Sunday and missing contacts so back to square one. Ty had some fourth and fifth places but either he or Claire were not on top form.
Sara worked Jet in the ABC jumping combined 1-7 and they were brilliant coming 6th Sara is very confident and Jet responds to her fantastically. It is amazing to watch them as they are the same hight at the shoulder. Jet is also fantastic with her around the show. It is interesting the effect using him as tutor dog with aggressive dogs is having. A collie lunged at him from behind a score tent and took some fur, and Jet just looked at him as if to say “ oh really, do behave yourself”. The collies response if it had been left alone would have been interesting but the owners were on him like a ton of bricks.
Dee came to the show and the socialisation is doing her so much good. The Kennel Club really should reconsider the age puppies are allowed to shows. Her training is coming on steadily she does not show any interest in tracking, but her recall is very good, and Sara does tricks with her. She is very confident on the wobble boards and agility foundation equipment, and she has started stalking the chickens so perhaps she will be a sheepdog. We wish she would sort her ears out she still has one up and one down.
So overall no Dragons this year except for Chris but we had a good time, but we doubt we will camp next year.
19th July We tried having a couple of days off on Friday and Saturday but ended up doing a lot of farm work which was a pleasant change. On Sunday we went to Rugby championship show which was more of a rest apart from the long drive. Ty was very unlucky not to qualify for Crufts at his first G6/7 show just having a wide turn and a borderline contact, he came 8th in the jumping of 300 G6&7 dogs. Jet was equally good getting 4th and 5th in his 2 grade 5 classes. Rusty was a bit unfortunate just having a fault in each class. Holly and Dee behaved well but Emmy stayed at home as she is still not fit. Tricky is now looking at acting very pregnant and Claire is in regular contact with Shirley getting support and advice. The puppies are due next weekend which could mess up our plans for Camping at Caerphilly.
16th July We have still not recovered from running our show and this week has been as busy as ever. We still not got the full details of how our members did at our show. But we know Phil won another agility class with Dillon, Claire won grade 5 agility which is a a nice bonus as it was his last G5 having already won 3 grade 5 jumping classes. Jet 2nd in Grade 5 agility having been in first place all day. Claire had to handle him as Mike was show manager. All our dogs are registered in Claires name so Mike can judge and show mange and Claire can still compete with them. It is quite clear that this is within the rules but seems to be an issue for some people. It is no wonder it is so difficult to get judges and show managers when this pettiness goes on. 13th July What a hectic week our first ever Diamond Dog Open Agility show has gone by in a blur of 16 hour days. Mistakes we made a few, but the feedback has been fantastic. It has been very satisfying if tiring for our mangement team Helen, Phil, Rachel, Claire and Mike, our helping members were fantastic, and our gratitude to the partners and family's who helped cannot be understated, they were absolutely brilliant. Amazingly considering how hard everyone worked we had some competition successes when we have a bit more time we write them up.
4th July
We have been at Tuffley Championship show his weekend we were a bit worried about leaving Glenda but it all worked out ok. We were not too far away. She was with her Mum and Sara and they had a nice relaxing time at home and we had a really good weekend. Shows are the closest we get to a day off when we are not working at them. Tuffley has a super venue and there was great atmosphere. It was hot on Saturday but not as bad as the previous weekend. Which was just as well Mike and Jet were first in one ring at 8.30 and last in another at 17.30. We really felt for the judge who had nearly 450 dogs and 5 ring changes. Helen managed to saunter in at 11 do 6 runs and swan off at 2. Rusty was a star winning G6 agility he only needs one more agility win and one more jumping win to go G7 hopefully by the end of year. Ty’s and Jets main event was the Olympia qualifier Ty was brilliant but just clipped a pole and Jet did a very good clear but was not quite fast enough. The rest of Ty’s class’s Claire used for training and Jet was clear but needed a bit more speed in his other classes. Dee is enjoying going to shows and we had an interesting spell with Holly. There was something about this show that set off her lunging and barking as Claire tried to stop her she displayed one of the most intense extinction bursts we have ever seen it took at least 40 minutes to work her through it and for her to settle down. On Sunday we were there bright and early and it was bit cooler with a strengthening breeze. Jet and Ty had 2 agility clear rounds each Ty was still in training mode with Claire holding all the contacts, and Jet had a 9th and a 6th. We had to wait until the afternoon until Rachel’s fantastic G5 jumping course it was a blast Ty absolutely flew it just clipping a brick out of the wall. Mike went mad and took a wrong course but Jet loved it. Rusty worked really well but had a couple of faults in his agility classes and was not was not quite fast enough for a place in the jumping.Dee had her first swim in the river with Jet and Ty. Holly was much better behaved especially when she was with Jet and Flint. We also enjoyed watching the championship class Mike particularly liked the girl in the boob tube and mini skirt who had to rebuild the long jump frequently, and he thinks this excellent entertainment should be encouraged in agility. Emmy seems to be improving rapidly, Tip is bouncing and Tricky is almost certainly pregnant which is just as well as we are getting a lot of interest in her puppies.
2nd July
This week has just gone by in a blur, Glenda is on light duties and we have to keep reminding her not to do much. She has been to the GP and we expect the tests in due course, in the meantime Mike and Claire have to take over most of her jobs. Emmy has been to the vet and It has been confirmed she did have a proper season and she does have an infection. It looks like we have caught it early and we are we trying a new treatment that should stop full pyometra developing, she has to have 3 injections over a week which will clear her out her womb. She is on general antibiotics and a culture has been done of the infection. In a few days she will have antibiotics specifically for the type of bacteria causing the infection. Hopefully this will prevent the need for major surgery, and she may be able to breed, but it is not guarenteed. Tricky went for her scan but the machine was playing so it has not been confirmed if she is pregnant but we are pretty sure she is from the way she looks and behaves. Since we have been to the vets so often we took Tip in as she has been a bit stiff and wobbly but then she is 14, she is now on metacam and antibiotics and seems a lot better. We have not had any time to take the dogs up on the Mendips this week so have just been exercised around the farm and we have done a bit more training with them. We are enjoying good weather still mostly sunny with a few showers and not quite as hot as last weekend, so classes have remained busy. The puppies are moving on to more agility foundation and they are amazing. Today (Friday) we have had Dave Munnings here training it has been fantastic, after the last couple of weeks it has been like a day off. We were going to let Dave get on with it and try to catch up with some other jobs, but it was so interesting and enjoyable that Claire stayed with him all day and Mike was also there most of time apart from a trip to get the rosettes for the show. Everything seems to be in place for the show now.
Diamond Diary
29th June
Glenda has come home from Hospital she is a lot better but is still a bit wobbly, they have done loads of tests and they have an idea of what the problem might be. She will have to see her GP and get more tests to confirm what it is. Hopefully they can come up with a treatment.
With all this drama we had lost sight of what was happening with Emmy, her season is going on far too long and we are worried she has an infection so she has been to the vet. She has had tests and is on antibiotics we hope to have results tomorrow.
We have continued with classes and everyone has been very supportive and helpful, especially Helen, Phil and Rachel who have had to take on more of the show work at a critical time.
28th June
The last few days have been terrible, when we got home Saturday we found Glenda had not been feeling very well. We put it down to the heat and we decided to go on the Lansdown show as Mike was judging and Claire was helping organise a Diamond ring party. Glenda’s mum agreed to stay with her at home for the day. It was already hot at 7.30 when Mike and Claire were building the course. Mike had been given 400 dogs to judge in 4 classes. This could mean up 10 or more hours with a forecast of up to 30c. Mike decided to ask people leave the ring if they were eliminated. Some people were understood but many complained, some offensively, other’s tried to come up with reasons why they were a special case. People were so unreasonable it is very unlikely Mike will ever judge again. If people want to their full course time in the ring (which we agree with) either the maximum amount of dogs that can be judged by one person must be greatly reduced or show organisers must plan better.
At around midday Helen got a phone call from Glenda’s Mum Val. Glenda had collapsed unconscious and had been taken to hospital in an ambulance. Claire and Sara were very upset and we all had to leave, Claire and Sara looked after the dogs and other animals and Mike went to the hospital to be with Glenda.
The only good news is that Helen and Daisy did a fantastic G1 agility round winning it by 4 seconds.
26th June
We have had a great day at Lansdown the only complaint could be it was far too hot, as it is so high up normally there is a good breeze there (sometimes a gale) but not this weekend. Ty has won into grade 6 Claire is thrilled to bits. Also Phil did an outstanding run with Dylan to win G1 agility. And we are absolutely delighted with our first ever crufts team. Kevin and Jake, Rachel and Flynn, Phil and Dylan, Jane and Boot came Third. Jet was in a BSD team which did quite well, but not as good as the Diamond Divas. Jet is having more dog walk contact problems. We have managed to get a fast A frame but getting the dog walk without a stop is proving difficult. Rusty worked well but also had a couple of contact faults. We stayed on in the evening to support Jane and Boot in the Omni pro final. It was a bit late starting but it was worth hanging on. It was great final for starters with a good crowd watching. Lexie was the wight dog and Jan gave a great display of handling it is a shame they had not qualified we are sure she would have won it. Jane was very nervous as it was the first time she had done anything like it but she did very well just having 5 faults. Emmy’s season is going on for a very long time we are starting to worry.
25th June
What a busy week, classes have been really full, we had an agility instructors course on Thursday and Friday which was great, the show organisation is well underway and we had 160 bales of hay off the field and a delivery of 50 bags of CSJ on the same day. All the time the heat has been building up.
20th June
What a glorious weekend sunny but not too hot. England were fantastic beating Australia 21 -20 and it was a really exciting game, the other lot were a disgrace. I blame the coach overdoing the discipline and control and not allowing the freedom to express natural ability.A lesson some dog trainers and instructors could take on board. We got up early Saturday and spent most of the morning catching up with farm work then chilled out in the afternoon. By the evening we were a bit bored and the dogs were restless. So Claire found a Lee Gibson G6/7 course on the web and we set it up and had a go at just for fun. It turned into a really good bit of training bringing out some interesting points for training we should do it more often.
On Sunday morning we went up to our show venue it is looking good. We could do with some rain to soften the ground a bit but everyone is going to have that problem. Otherwise everything is looking on course for a good weekend.
Then we went on to the micro chipping course. Glenda and Claire are now fully qualified micro chippers.
We took Holly to both the venue and the course where she was chipped. She was so well behaved at both. We are absolutely delighted. It has been a lot of hard work and it has taken a long time but we seem to be getting close to having a well balanced dog. As we are taking her out and about more we have noticed she gets distressed by lorries. So there is another thing to work on and wonder how it came about. Having the other dog from puppies has been so much easier.
18th June
It has been a really busy week for all the classes and 1-2-1’s. It has been dry and mostly sunny and getting increasingly warm as the north east wind has moved away. We have been getting up early to do the farm and stable jobs and then doing admin when it is really hot and then dog training in the evening as it starts to cool down. The agility training sessions have been really good for both the classes and our own dogs who are all fit now. Again our favourite lesson was the puppy class which once more was on a beautiful summers evening. They all want to go on to do agility and they were a bit surprised when we said we would do the A frame and weaves. The A frame was flat on the ground and the puppies had not problems trotting along it as they are already used to walking on different surfaces. The weaves was our own set up of 4 netted weaves and within a few minute all the puppies were enjoying a game of find the treat through the weaves.
The problem dogs we have been working with recently are now sorted out and we getting down to normal control and training. This is so satisfying and it can be quite emotional when people tell you how it has changed their quality of life and relationship with their dogs.
One of the admin jobs has been sorting out registrations ready for Ty and Tricky’s puppies and trying to get a kennel name. You would think it would be simple but we want them to be dual Kennel Club and International Sheepdog Society registered. We cannot have Diamond as too many dogs already have Diamond in their name. So we have to find a name that is acceptable to both ISDS and KC and not already taken. Both offices have been very helpful but we have been going round in circles. We have also been getting ready for our agility show it is getting exciting now fortunately the entries and not too high and should not have too many problems.
This is a rare weekend free from competition so we are planning a day off Saturday and then on Sunday morning we are going up to the show venue to check it out and do a ring plan and then in the afternoon Claire and Glenda are going on a petplan microchipping course. 14th June
Mega congratulations to Jane and Boot winning into Grade 3 and Jan and Ruby winning into Grade 4. In both cases it shows patience and persistence will lead to fantastic results. On Saturday a group of our members did a demonstration at volksfest and report they had a great day out. Mike and Claire were at Thames Championship Show at the weekend trying for some qualifiers. Sara joined them on Sunday for the juniors. The good news is Ty came second in the CSJ Novice class and qualified for second year running. He is still not 100% and was narrowly beaten by Charlotte Harding’s marvellous young dog. He got stronger as the weekend on and although working well picked up faults. Rusty was up to his usual tricks. On Thursday he went out with Glenda to put the Hens away and he killed a large rat. On Friday he escaped through a window and spent most of the night hunting. If you have ever considered this as preparation for a major competition we would like to advise you it is a terrible idea. He was in feisty Terrier mode on Saturday and was much more interested in having terrier fun than agility. He was confined to quarters on Saturday night. On Sunday his first class was jumping he made an error but instead of correcting him Claire kept running and kept his attention rewarding him when they got the finish line. His second class was the Olympia qualifier Claire used the same approach and they put in by far the fastest time just skimming over the down contact on the dogwalk for just 5 faults. Their final class was G 6,7 agility they did a stunning clear round to come third, the only error was Rusty took a slight detour to check out a poster with a picture of a merle collie perhaps he thought it was Ty. Jet and Mike did 4 good clears 2 jumping 2 agility but were not fast enough with their best place 15th. There will have to be more work on speed now they are in grade 5. Sara did a wonderful job with Jet in under 12 juniors coming 10th out of 45 and they were the smallest handler with the biggest dog. They just had 5 faults in the weaves which Sara corrected very professionally. Thames is a very big show, very well run and we watched some really good runs in the championship and G6.7 classes. We were sorry we missed the demo but really enjoyed Thames.
11th June
The highlight of week was again the puppy class on Wednesday it was great to see the puppies
enjoying socialising and starting training. We have taken a lot of pictures of them and Claire has put them on facebook. We are also trying to get them on our website and also some video on youtube, but it involves so much time on the computer. There were a couple new ones of Ty’s and it was good to see Paul Ford again he is an old friend from our early days of dog training.
Classes have been like the weather a bit patchy, but have got some good training in with our dogs. Emmy as well as recovering from injury has been in season and has started some basic training exercises and we hope to have her ready for Lansdown which is Just as well as she is ina BSD crufts team and the ABC. Ty is coming back on form so this weekend at Thames should be interesting.
6th June
Mike and Claire went to Hinckley on Sunday. We really like this show it is at a great venue, it is very well run, aimed at the higher grades, not too big, and there is some great agility to watch. Unfortunately there had been a thunder storm in the night and the rings were very wet and slippery Ty had a couple of early runs. He set off at a fast pace but soon realised it was not ideal and changed down a gear not wanting a repeat of the previous couple of shows. It caught Claire out and they made some errors. As the day heated up it became very humid and thundery we were not on our best form Mike and Jet’s first 2 also did not go well. There were not any suitable classes for Rusty and Emmy is still off work. So we watched some very interesting agility in the grade 6 7 ring, and a very dangerous looking flying display.
The rings had dried in the afternoon and Jet and Ty did a couple of very good runs in the Olympia qualifier Jet just clipped a pole and Ty did a very impressive clear but we think he is still at about 70% physically and mentally.
It looked like a storm was coming in at about 3pm Ty was lying 8th with about a hundred dogs to go so was not likely to qualify. So we decide to get off home. That was just as well we drove back through some terrible storms arriving home to find bright sunshine and a pleasant breeze had been the order of the day.
4th June
It has been a funny sort of week, generally there have been fewer people in classes as it is half term and there was a bank holiday, but the classes have been very good, we have been enjoying lovely summer weatherand a couple were busier than usual. The highlight was the new puppy class on Wednesday. Most of the puppies were from Ty and Honey’s litter, and Chris brought her new puppy, they were all gorgeous and we enjoyed a fantastic summer evening doing basic training and socialisation on the grass training paddock.
On Tuesday morning there was some rain while we were walking the dogs on the Mendips it was very pleasant and refreshing for the dogs and we only saw one other person all morning.
Training with our dogs is going very well as well as the usual handling practice we are looking at ways of speeding up weaves and contacts. Ty is not 100% fit yet but is gradually coming back.
Emmy is just doing light flat work. Holly is amazing at agility if her behaviour at shows continues to be as good as last weekend we will think about entering her in some classes.
Puppy Dee is coming on well her basic recalls sits and downs are very good and she is totally confident on our puppy obstacles. She is also good at finding treats in the grass and finding hidden children. The only problem is Sara is taking over her training.
Rusty redeemed himself he sleeps on Mike and Glenda’s bed and at 4.30 one morning just as the sun was rising he woke them up, very excited about something outside. A fox had got into the chicken run and was chewing at the hen house. Rusty went out to chase him off and very unusually instead if the fox running over the fields to the moor it went the other way across the road. Rusty did not follow, what a good boy. Glenda put him on a long line just in case and investigated two hens that decided to roost outside had been killed but the Fox had not got into the main flock. You would think it would have been enough to take the two birds it had killed, it could be a bad un. The collies and Belgians slept through it all but it is another reminder that our dogs are bred for other things than agility.
30th May We have had a great couple of days at the Swat show. It is only half hours drive which makes a nice change. They had a few teething problems and the ground was hard and cracked but it was still very enjoyable. Saturday morning was raining and cold but it cleared up by midday. Jet was on brilliant form winning grade 4 agility on Saturday, he also got a 6th in G4 jumping, and would have done a great combined jumping if Mike had not lost the plot. It was Ty's first show after coming back from injury and in his first class he had a nasty slip on a wet A frame, and he was not right for the rest of the day having a pole down and missing weaves. Rusty was a little git working well but then spoiling it with lack of concentration. We didn't take Emmy as she had been lame again. There was a pay on the day practice ring where Swat normally train so we tried Holly there, we are so pleased with her she concentrated on Claire completely. It was worth going just for that. Sunday morning started sunny and dry but the wind became stronger as the day went on. Jet did well again getting 12th in G1-7 Jumping, and 4th and 6th in G4 jumping classes. He worked well in the G4 agility but Mike was a bit lazy on the A frame, cutting a corner instead of running on and jet missed the contact. Ty and Claire were slow coming back into form but on the last run of the weekend won G5 Jumping. Rusty continued in is errant ways. Other good diamond dog performances were Carol Wye and Seiren winning G2 agility, and Phil and Dillon getting second in G1 agility. The Smart clinic had a stand at the show and suggested we take Emmy there but to our surprise she is moving around really well, better than ever in fact. Ite will be interesting to see how she is over the next few days. We took Holly into the practice ring again and not only was she very well behaved in the ring she was very good while waiting so we took her into a small fenced off area by the ring and she was very good there and she had a dog working in the ring ahead of her and dogs on the other two sides. We will test her at some other shows before she competes but it is looking very promising. This has led us to think about Ty. Last year he had some nasty experiences with dogs chasing him in the ring and jumping on him while he was resting. This had made him very defensive when approached by other dogs. If we had done the usual thing of checking him or even worse using aversion techniques it could have made him rally aggresive. Instead we have been very careful protecting him from other dogs and not putting him in situations wher he would feel threatened. He is now becoming very relaxed and even friendly towards other dogs. 28th May Emmy is still lame , the SMART clinic found some problems and she is having physio but she will not be competing for a few weeks. We are very dissapointed as she will be missing some good shows. The other dogs are on good form and with the weather cooling down but staying fine we have got some good training in. Dee is remakable for such a young puppy we should have been ready for it after Ty who is similar breeding but it is still a surprise. Holly's agility is also outstanding we are now looking at how we can introduce her to a show environment without any problems.
25th May
Mike, Glenda and Jet are back from the FMBB world championships. All 3 had a great time but are very tired. Mike will write about it on the BSD WC page. Claire has been very busy taking all the lessons and keeping the dogs training ticking over. It has been very hot so it is not a bad thing they have had not been able to do much and the rest has helped with their injuries. Ty seems completely recovered but needs some competition practice, Emmy is still on lead rest but has shown a little bit of lameness she is going to the SMART clinic tomorrow. Tricky has come into season and mated with Ty so we should have some fantastic puppies in a couple of months. Dee is growing quickly and is now sleeping from around 11pm until 5am, then she needs to go out and has a run around for half an hour and sleeps for another couple of hours. The Diamond DAC dogs did well at phoenix show we hope to have full details soon. 16th May On Thursday and Friday we ran the second part of one of our instructors courses, we enjoy doing them but they are very tiring. We also had busy classes on thursday evening. On Saturday and Sunday we went to the World Championships at Hand a couple of miles from us. It was good but quite as good as other world championships we have been to. There was some outstanding agility with interesting dogs and handling styles, but the atmosphere was slow to build up peaking on Sunday afternoon only to fizzle out. This has meant we have had less time for our dogs than usual so they have enjoyed a bit of a rest from training and just done some basic exercise. It doesn't seem to have affected them too much. Ty and Honey's puppies have started going to their new homes we hope to have some updates on how them get on. 12th May A great few days, it has still been cold at night but the days have been dry and mild, the evenings have been especially pleasant, we have had good classes and been able to exercise Dee outside the result being she went to sleep at 10pm and didn't wake up until 6am lovely, and the mornings although chilly are ok for taking puppies out. Tricky is gaining confidence quickly she is now happy running around the grass paddock and arena of the lead and is playing with the other dogs. She has been on some lead walks around the farm and hasn't shown any interest in the sheep or horses. Emmy is settling into her lead rest a bit better and the stiffle swelling is going down. Holly and Ty have done some work and they were awesome. Mike has been doing little bits of FCI training with Jet including the table he is on really good form and is looking good as well. We have an instructors course here on Thurdays and Friday, It is Sara's 7th Birthday on Friday, then we are at Hand watching the ICFS agility world championships on Saturday and Sunday, then on Monday Mike Glenda and Jet leave for the FMBB world championships. So we have a busy couple of weeks coming up. 9th May A fairly quiet weekend. No shows but Claire ran an agility competition workshop on Saturday morning it went very well in spite of it being very cold for the time of year. We did a bit of training with Jet focusing on FCI, also with Rusty and Holly they were all very good. Claire did a little bit with Ty on Sunday he enjoyed it but we want to make sure he is fully sound before doing too much. Emmy is terrible at being on lead rest even worse than a collie. Dee is more amazing each day she has even more drive than Ty had the same age. We really did not expect it but we are very pleased. Even better she is virtually house trained already and last night slept from 11pm until 6am. Tricky is settling in slowly she has been on walks around the farm but we have kept her on the lead as she can jump a 5 bar gate. Shirley had warned us but Tricky demonstrated by jumping out of the menage. We have to be careful because we are on a very busy road and few people keep to the speed limit on it. Tricky has been great with everyone she has met and all of our dogs. We have been on Anadune and on the web studying the dogs in her pedigree and those from her previous litters. They are stunning and we are very excited about having a litter from her and Ty. As it has been so cold we have caught up with the admin but the maintenance is not progressing, the paint on the dog walk is still not completely dry. 7th May Vets first thing this morning after dropping Sara at school, Dee met the children again but she was very sleepy. All was well with her at the vets and she was very relaxed the whole time. She is being very good with sleeping and house training. She follows Mike around, comes when called, sits and lies down for a treat, plays with a ball and she is gorgeous. We are starting to realise how unusual her solid sable and white colour is everyone comments on it. All very amazing and her bright blue eyes are changing through green to amber we have not seen that before. Tricky is taking longer to settle in but is gradually getting more confident. She loves people and is getting to know each of the dogs but she is very wary of every new experience. Emmy has a stifle injury. some swelling can now just be felt. She is on lead rest and will probably go to the smart clinic in couple of weeks. Mike thought this was the case as it seemed so similar to problems his old dog Sabre had a few times. We took Jet to weight him he is about 1 Kilo heavier it is solid muscle he actually feels a bit on the thin side. We are now concentrating on getting him ready for the FMBB world championships which are 2 weeks away. Focusing on FCI weaves,Tyre, and distance between equiptment. After the vets Mike has been sorting out the training paddock and cutting the grass. The dog walk looks very smart but the paint is taking ages to dry because it has been put on very thickly with sand between coats, and the weather has turned cold again. We are having a weekend free of shows to catch up with more jubs and Claire is running a special competition workshop on Satuday. 6th May Busy catching up with farm jobs this morning, Mike and Glenda went to vote in the village and had lunch in the pub, Claire went down to vote later. Don't no why we bother this area has been conservative since the stone age. In the afternoon Glenda and Claire took 2 of her horses show jumping. Evening agility classes were very busy Mike and Helen took the beginners classes and Bekki and Sara were on puppy minding and stable duties. Then Claire took the competiton class and they all seemed to be laughing and enjoying it too much but when they finished they all said how hard they had workd!! Puppy Dee is doing well sleeping from around 12 pm - 6am we took her to Sara's school to socialise the children were great. Emmy has been sound but has suddenly gone lame again, Dee has to go to the vets for her checkup and vaccination so we are taking Emmy as well. 5th May
We are still shattered but we had some good lessons during the day and a beautiful spring evening. Admin and maintenance jobs have been backing up and we need a burst of energy and some time to catch up. Puppy Dee has settled in very easily she is very bold and nothing has phased her yet. She is totally happy with all the other dogs thanks to puppy inhibition. Even Holly has been brilliant with her which is a surprise considering the problems Holly has with some other dogs. Tricky is having some problems adjusting to life away from the mountain. She is very happy in a kenneland when she is with Ty but she does not like being on her own out in the open. She seems to have taken to Sara so we will see if that will help.
This afternoon Claire and Sara went to Bobs to see Ty and Honey’s puppies and took a load of photos they are gorgeous and Bob has done a great job with them.
In the evening Dee loved going out to the dry wildlife pond with Mike and Jet and watching the change over from swallows to bats. Spring is the best time to have puppies.
4th May
What a day
Claire and Mike had to go to North Wales to collect a puppy of Shirley Bell at Canen Border Collies. We had looked at google maps at the shortest route on A roads is 185 miles and the longest on motorway is 257miles. We have had some bad experiences travelling on the M5,M6 around Birmingham so decided to use Claire’s car and take the scenic route, and boy was it scenic, 180 miles of stunning views unfortunately it took 5 hours to get there we left just before 7am and got there just after 12.
Shirley has 25 acres on the edge of an slate quarry on mount Snowdon. As you look out over the Irish Sea it seems like you are half way up but we were told it is only the base. Everyone there just takes the stunning surroundings for granted. Shirley has a great natural understanding of her dogs which are the traditional ISDS type we like but come in wide variety of colours. Shirley recognised Claire’r affinity with dogs especially puppies and they hit it off immediately. It was a bit busy with people from all over the country collecting or arranging to collect puppies. Shirley kindly showed us around and we were really to pleased to see the dogs we had been studying through pedigrees for so long. They are all superbly fit from running around the side of a mountain all day. Claire had told Shirley about our hopes to breed from Ty and the problems with Holly and we were just getting in the car to leave when Shirley said to Claire “if you did want a litter from Ty that little bitch there would be ideal you can borrow her if you like” a bit of a discussion took place and we have also brought home Canen Tricky a pretty little bundle of mischief.
We set off on the return leg around 2pm having decided to give the Motorway route a try as we were supposed to back to take classes at 6. We drove as fast as we could and only had a short delay around the M6 M5 interchange, and it still took 5 hours we just got back in time for the 7 pm beginners group which was very busy, fortunately the 6pm class was fairly quiet as most people had been competing the previous day, so Glenda was able to manage on her own.
We have agreed we will not try to do it in one day again, apart from the exhausting journey it is such a shame to visit such a beautiful place and not take time to look around.
3rd May We enjoyed Vyne Championship Show in spite of the weather and having 2 dogs not 100% fit. It was good to be at a show and be not involved in helping. Although we did help a ring get get started while waiting for the ring party to arrive. Rusty had 2 early runs and it was far too cold for him to concentrate, his afternoon run was in an icy shower he did his best but messed up the weaves, at least we collected his second place trophy and rosette from the previous weekend. The ground had dried out by the time Jet did his grade 4 agility run and he was on great form lying second until the last few dogs ran and ending up 6th. As he has qualified in the ABC we used it for WC practice really pushing him hard, this caused him to miss a tight pull through but Mike expected that and just pushed on, he still got all his contacts and the weaves. He did a good clear in the G4 jumping but it was in an icy downpoor so Mike had to take it careful. Ty did a stunning C3-5 jumping round coming second, we thought it best to go straight to his agility round rather than cool him down and then warm up again but it didn't work he just didn't work as well and had a pole down, after a rest he was better in his last run but came out of the canvas tunnel off centre and got a refusal on the following jump. Emmy worked very well but we are still getting the balance between keeping her attention on Claire and letting her run on when she gets distracted. Her first 2 runs had 5 faults each and then she was clear in the ABC and was 14th towards the end of the class, even though she had a bit of a slip and fall. We had hoped to stop to find out what place she got and watch the championship finals but there was heavy hail storm and we decided to call it a day. We were a bit worried about the bank holiday, Badminton and the North Somerst show traffic but it was fine and we were home by 6. 2nd May Mayday is here and it must be North Somerset show weekend as it has turned wet and cold as usual. We are off to Vynne championhip show for a change this year. For the last 5 years we have been going to the FMBB world championships on the Tuesday after the bank holiday and it would not make sense to drive to Newbury bring the dogs back home then drive back past Newbury again, the WC is 2 weeks later this year so we will see what Vyne can provide. It is very hard to guess how the dogs will do, Ty seems fully recovered from his injury but has been on lead rest for a week and will therefore be a bit lively. Last Friday we went on a long walk in the Mendips exploring a new area. Then in the evening Emmy was on 3 legs and she was supposed to be at a breed show at Hand EC on Saturday. She was still holding up in the morning so she went to the vet instead, as soon as she got there she started walking normally and Sue could not find anything wrong. Claire thinks she was just getting out of showing. She is mostly running normally but she has held her leg up a few time. Thank heavens Jet is sound it is his last competition before the world championships. He got a first and second at the breed show he doesn't mind strolling around looking handsome. Rusty also seems on good form in spite of having a great time hunting while we were on the Mendips. We were going to have a quiet weekend but have found we have been quite busy catching up with outstanding jobs. One is repainting the dog walk, with the cost of paint and the amount of work involved we wonder if it is worth buying aluminium and fibreboard equipment instead. And we have just heard Taz has run into a bike and will be out of action for some time Helen will be very upset.
27th April Ty was not too bad on Monday so we did not go to vet, he is now a bit stiff but walking soundly so we suspect just a bit of soft tissue damage and bruising. We are keeping him rested and just on short lead walks until the end of the week and then we will see how he is. The only competition we have is Vyne which we are mainly going to for the ABC then we are going to watch the ICFS world champs the and Jet goes to the FMBB world champs. So Ty can rest for most of May and hopefully be fit to compete in June. 25th April
The very good news today is Jet has qualified in the Olympia ABC class at the WBSDS show, it was a demanding course set by Andy Hudson and we saw some very good runs.Jet came 6th but 2 of the dogs placed above him have already qualified so we will be going to the semi finals. He is working very well getting 3 agility clear rounds and 3 clear jumping rounds over the weekend,(Claire had to work him on Saturday as Mike was Judging) his best places were 8th and 9th He also did well in the World Championship training on Saturday night with Nancy Hudson.
The good news is Rusty was on mixed form again having a few silly faults but then on Sunday pulled out all the stops and came second in combined Grade 6&7 agility only being beaten by Natasha Wise and her world champion winning dog.
The not quite such good news was when she went up to collect her trophy “someone” had already “collected it” for her. There had obviously been a miss up but we are sorry to say the people in the secretaries tent were less than helpful.
The quite good news is Emmy worked well but is still having problems with being distracted she got an 8th place in G3 jumping and a couple of clear rounds in other jumping classes, in agility she is having faults not with contacts as you would expect but with weaves. Still it is only her 3rd ever show.
The bad news is Ty is injured. He had been working well with only a couple off minor faults but then he hit a jump while doing a turn around a wing from a pull through. We will see how he is in the morning but most likely we will be going to vets.
Congratulations to Carol Wye and Seren who got a 3rd and 4th place on Sunday.
Overall the show was very well run with just a few of the usual problems with help, but we did not have to work as hard as at Shuttleworth. The weather was just right, dry and sunny but not too hot, as it has been all week. In fact it has been so dry for the last few weeks we are having problems with grazing for the horses, and we are still feeding hay. Also the wildlife pond has completely dried out, bad for the wildlife in the short term but we have taken the opportunity to enlarge it and it is now twice the size. A real joy is that the swallows are back and have started nesting and the bats have come out of hibernation and can be seen hawking for insects in the evening.
We have been busier than ever and we are having problems fitting everything in but have managed some more walks with the dogs in the Mendips. Claire has been struggling to keep up and she has now resulted in riding her horse.
18th April
A week is a long time in dog training. The weather has been glorious and we have been very busy. On Thursday and Friday we were running an Agility Instructors course. It was another great group of people with a wide range of experience but all keen to increase their knowledge. It was a bit cold in the barn on Thursday morning when we were doing the Theory but we warmed up as we got into the practical sessions and the weather improved on Friday. We went out for a meal Thursday night with the people who were staying over but everyone was too tired to stay late. By the weekend the weather was glorious on Saturday we tidied up the grass paddock. Then on Sunday we had a simulated competition in the morning and fired up the barby in the afternoon. The simulated competitions are great to give new people an idea of what to expect without any pressure and a chance for everyone to practice. Everyone enjoyed it and learnt something from it. Claire worked Holly just to see what she would be like with the other dogs around her. We are delighted with her she was only distracted once by a dog by the gate when she should have gone into the weaves but she never stopped working or lost her contact with Claire. Sara worked Jet and she was a little star, she will do some more junior classes in the summer. Only a few people stayed on but it was very pleasant. It is quite spooky to have no air traffic due to the volcanic ash. The plane noise does not bother us too much we are a good 5 miles from Bristol airport and it is 400ft above us so the planes are high when they go over, but we are also under the long haul path from North America to London and usually the sky is full of vapour trails. So it was strange to be out in the paddock with an absolutely clear blue sky and not even a whisper of a plane.
Kath and Kevin are stranded in Florida not the worst place to be but it must be a worry for them not knowing when they can back to work and they must be using up their holiday funds for the next couple of years.
Honey’s puppies are 4weeks old now Bob has found homes for 4 of them but the black and white and blue merle girls are still available. We would really like to have one and we have decided it is time Mike had a puppy, because if we get a puppy this summer it will be 2012 when it would be ready to compete and Jet will be rising 6. The problem is we would like to breed our line using Ty. We have been in contact with Shirley Bell at Canen for some and have been waiting for a suitable bitch puppy. She has the working lines of ISDS registered dogs that we like and both Ty’s parent were bred by her. By coincidence when we were at the Easter Celebration we saw a couple of Sable collies and Mike said to Claire “I would love a dog like that, they remind me of Sabre my first agility dog”, Claire had a look on the Canen website when we got home and there was an absolutely gorgeous Sable girl puppy that is not too closely related to Ty, all being well she will be joining the family in 4 weeks time.
12th April
It has been a good week for training but everything has been over shadowed by Mike and Claire going to Spring at Shuttleworth. We feel we have to go as they help support the Great Britain Agility team for the FMBB world championships which we are involved in. It is should be a nice show it has a great venue and facilities but it was not a good experience for us the journey there was terrible with long delays on the M25, the weather on Friday and Saturday was roasting during the day and literally freezing at night, on Sunday there a cold wind and it didn’t warm up until midday. We had to work so hard on Friday and Saturday we could not concentrate on our dogs Ty and Rusty got a second place each and Jet and Emmy got a couple of clear runs.We were too tired to be disappointed. On Sunday we wanted to spend more time with the dogs but we were under constant pressure to help because there were so few people working in the rings. We felt very bad by the afternoon and we were so worried about the journey back that we helped to pack up some rings but had to leave at 5pm. We drove back across country to avoid the M25. It was slow but at least we kept moving and we got back at 9pm. Exhausted does not come close to describing how we felt. We are not camping again unless we really have to and never again in April.
April 5th Claire, Mike and Sara went to the Easter Celebration to on Sunday The good news is Ty won G5 jumping and Rusty won G6 jumping, It was also Emmy's first competition and she worked really well getting a 7th in G3 Jumping and just had a couple of mistakes in her other classes. It was was also Sara's first time in KC show and she did well getting a third in Juniors with Jet. She was thrilled to bits with her trophy, rosette and easter eggs. They were in first class of the day and Ty was just too strong for her. The less good news is Rusty was in bi-polar mode and disgraced himself in his agility class and Ty was doing brilliantly in the KC qualifier and had the last but one pole down. The weather in previous week had been appalling and vehicles and rings were not allowed on the grass, so the rings were in a large shed and 4 jumping rings were in 2 20x40m arenas, so the the courses were very tight with minimum distances between jumps. This did not suit Jet at all, or Ty and Emmy really, to make matters worse we had got up at 4am to leave at 5 to get Sara there in time for her class and then Mike and Jets did not have a run then until 4 pm and then did all 3 in 10 minutes as the classes were closing. In Jets first run with Mike there was a spread with very little landing space and he crashed it, he did 2 good clear rounds after that but was a bit worried and could get into his stride and was not fast enough to get a place. We left about 5pm getting home exhausted at 8pm. It is a well run show at a good venue with plenty of hard standing, proper toilets and the organiseres were right to use the arenas rather than cancel the show. But overall our feeling at the moment is never again. The rest of the week has been organised around the weather, it doesnt effect the work with problem dogs we can always go in the barn if we have to but some classes were quiet when the weather was bad and others were busy when the weather was ok. We have also been catching up with jobs and trying to have a spring sortout and getting the garden ready for when the weather does improve.
March28th Claire is back off holiday thank goodness. She had a great time but is keen to get back to her dogs and horses. We have been so busy there has not been much time for training our dogs and they are getting a bit lively. Mike is handing over management of the GB agility team to Louise Challis so he can concentrate on Jet for the world championships. The sheep are out in the fields now so they will be less work. We are getting a lot of requests to run a stock socialisation course so we will have to plan some for the summer. We have recently worked with a couple of stock chasers very successfully with the sheep and their lambs in pens. Not the nonsense about putting the dog in with them, that would turn them into sheep killers, we just play the recall and retrieve games getting closer to them. Also a couple of the problems dogs we have been working with will be able to join normal classes soon. There has been a lot of interest in Honey and Ty's puppies so they should all find good working homes. We have changed to summer training times now so have had the first weekend without training since christmas and before that Octoberso that was a nice break and a chance to catch up on some jobs. March 22nd Honey has had her puppies 3 boys and 3 girls right on schedule with no problems. Two girls and a boy are still available.
It has been really busy with Claire away on holiday even with the change over to summer training times, and we had the second part of one of our agility instructors courses at the weekend. That went very well in spite of a few people dropping out at the last moment. What sort of excuse is a broken leg. There has not be much time for training our dogs just a bit to keep them ticking over we will have to catch up when Claire gets back with our first show at easter. We have had some rain at last and with it warming up there are a few buds on the trees and a bit of grass coming through but we are having a very late spring compared with the last few years. The last ewe has lambed and they will all be out in the next few days as soon as they are all vaccinated. We are getting a lot of requests for stock socialisation workshops and we will have get some arranged. The warm weather and rain has brought on a mini plague of rats. The dogs are enjoying hunting them the belgians aren't very good at it, except Tippy who has had the practice but at 15 is losing the reactions needed, the collies are quite good, but the master is Rusty. He could make a career out of it if the agility and media doesn't work out. We will have to discuss it with his agent. March 14th At last it is warm as well as dry we have had a lovely few days with some great dog training. We had thought it would be quiet with people going to crufts but it has been very busy. Glenda and Helen went to Crufts for the day on Friday and had an enjoyable day out. Claire is away on holiday with her Grandmother in Bali, some Australian relatives kindly invited them to share a Villa and Nan helped with the flight as birthday present. So they should have a great time. Mike has been busy sorting out the arrangements for the FMBB world championships before handing over to Louise Challis for the actual competition. We are swapping over from winter to summer training the last winter training is this Sunday and we start Summer training Monday 22nd March. We still have lots of 1-2-1 agility lessons and a few problem dogs to see and next weekend we have an agility instructors course. Jet had a few days rest but soon wanted to get back to work so we started training again. Working on fitness and speed for both him and Mike. Training for our other dogs is proceeding as planned and we are looking forward to the competition season starting soon. In between all this we have watched some crufts online which was great. It is so handy to be able to view on demand. Unfortunately so much of crufts is depressing, the standard in agility is mixed even allowing for the environment, surface and nerves, but at least the dogs and handlers were enjoying it and Natasha was a brilliant example as a judge. In showing the unhealthy examples of some breeds still getting awards even best in breed was shocking, this is going to continue until the judges really tighten up and do not give anything to dogs with health or temperament problems. How this fits in with fit for life fit for purpose is a complete mystery. The obedience was awful the dogs couldn't walk into the ring under control and then gave a display that was so unnatural it was obscene. We thought More4 put together a well balanced series of programs which should keep the debate about dog breeding going, but it is a shame their coverage of the actual events was not at all proffesional. It was as bad as the BBC with the the introduction of an even worse muppet than Fogle and Claire Baldwin was strugling to do some serious interview with terrible background noise DFS must be very dissapointed. March 7th A fantastic end to a mixed week. Jet has quailfied for The Great Britain Agility team in the individual competition we are so pleased with him in 8 runs over very challenging courses he only had one elimination and a few faults. We left to go to the selection near Daventry as the sun was rising and got home just as it was setting and barely saw a cloud in the sky. It was bitterly cold when we arrived but it soon warmed up for a great day. Claire also took Emmy as the white dog and Ty in reserve. Emmy's first run was super if she had been in competition she would have come fourth. In her second run she was a bit distracted and made a couple of mistakes so for the second 2 runs we replaced her with Ty he was bit wound up fom waiting to do something for so long but worked reasonbly well. On Saturday we ran a simulated show for people who train with us mainly for those who will be competing for the first time this year but also with the aim of getting people who have done a bit of competing experience at helping out at a show and doing the all important tasks. It seems obvious when you have been doing it for a while but there are lots of little things that you need to know about and when they are added together they are quite daunting to people new to it. Anyway a good time was had by all, and a lot was learnt. Each dog had a run on an agility course , a jumping course and we finished with a steeplechase. Claire was in charge of prizes so obviously they were chocolate based. Spring has been on pause during the week we have had some glorious days but some freezing nights and a cople of cold days with biting winds. it has stayed dry so training and lambing continued. Unfortunately we have all had some sort of winter virus, Sara brings them home from school, which did not go with the cold weather so we have not been on top form this week. We are getting back to normal now but it would be nice to have a trouble free preparation for a big event like a worl champ selection. March 2nd It is like a switch has been pressed and Spring has been turned on. Last weeks weather was mixed with some nice days and some wet. Training classes have varried accordingly. The number of problem dogs we are dealing with is growing steadily and we are getting great results with them. It is so satisfying to help both people and dogs. Mike was away at the weekend running the second part of the Agility Instructors course for Douglas DTC on the Isle of Mann. He had a great time working with an enthusiastic group of people and some fantastic dogs. Their standard of training is generally very good but they have a lot of problems getting experience because it is not easy for them getting to shows. While he was away Claire and Helen took the Agility Classes and had very good classes specially on Saturday with a very good afternoon group for dogs getting ready for their first show. Glenda is enjoying taking a puppy class on Sunday mornings, it is similar to normal type of puppy class but in a very different environment to the usual church hall, and it gets puppies used to behaving properly around farm animals and older dogs. Mike came back on Monday and the sun came out along with the crocus and daffodils and we started lambing. Holly has been a lot better behaved following our set back with her last weekend perhaps she realised we were very unhappy with her. She has worked in a couple of small classes that had suitable dogs in, and played with a couple of visiting dogs without any problems. For many years we have used Dash for as stooge dog working with dogs with dog aggression problems but as she is now 15 years old we have started using Jet and Emmy. They are very good at it with very different techniques that they have perfected with Holly. Dash also brought in the ewes for lambing gently and firmly, we will really miss her when she goes. There is no more news on Honey so we assume all is well there. Jet is getting ready for the final selection for the FMBB world championships next Sunday he is working so well at the moment but it is all very close with only a few points between dogs so anything could happen. Next Saturday we are running a simulated agility show for all the people who train with us and we are looking forward to it.
Feb 22nd What a cruel month February is. We have had some sunny days with hints of spring and also sleet, snow, hail and freezing winds. The weekend was good though with ideal dog training weather and busy classes. We have a nice group of dogs that will be ready for competition this year so shows should be fun this season. Hinckley and Rugby schedules came out on Friday. Mike started the Hinkley entry on line Friday afternoon as soon as he saw it and by the time he finished it and started on the Rugby entry their camping was full so we will not bother going. We think it is a bit of a stitch up with the camping already allocated to organisors, judges and friends. Half the competitors camping at our show in July has gone in the first week but because that is in addition to officials camping and we do not have any qualifiers there are still 100 places left. On Friday we took Sara hunting. She had been promised to go to the special childrens meet at xmas but the weather was so bad she couldn't. There was a Friday meet to fit in with the hunt ball and it was half term holidays and a nice day. So off we went. Hunting is so much better after the ban. There used to be so much standing around waiting to find a trail now its meet up, a nice drink of something warming and hot sausage roll and off on a preset trail. Claire and Sara went for a great ride for about an hour then came back early. Glenda, Mike and Rusty drove to a vantage point and watched proceedings from the comfort of the car. It is so interesting to see how the hounds are controlled by voice and horn from horse back without what we would normally think of as training they just learn from the older hounds. Rusty would have loved to join in he might be a pedigree PRT and if you met him in the house you would think what a softy but the hunting instinct is only just beneath the surface. Rusty and Ty have their pet passports now and they will be trying out with Claire for the world champ team at the end of June. We have realistic expectations. This year it is all about getting experience they only have an outside chance of being selected. It would be nice to take Ty to the border collie classic we will have to see which country it will be in next. It is only 2 weeks now to Jet going to the selection for the FMBB world championships, it's very exciting Jet is working really well the question really is will he have enough speed. Honey has had her scan and there are at least 5 puppies. It is so tempting to have one, Honey is such a sweet dog and Ty is a fantastic worker but this terrible weather has reminded us what hard work having 7 dogs can be. Also we would like to breed from Jet and Emmy in a couple of years so we have to plan for that. Holly has been so good with dogs she knows we tried bringing her out when we had our Saturday afternoon workshop. The idea was that they are all experienced dog owners, but it was too much for Holly she got very stressed and even snapped at Lynne. This was a complete surprise she has not been a problem with people for almost a year. So its back to basics with her, we had entered her in one class on a Sunday at some weekend shows the idea was we would socialise her all weekend and then if she is settled try a run with her. We have now cancelled those entries are we are not even going to take her to a show until we are confident with her here. We have had enough bad experiences with people not controlling their dogs and having them chase or attack Ty. He is now defensive and we have to make sure we protect him so he can relax. If the same thing happened with Holly it would set our work back and we may not be able sort her out. All the people who owned her before us have a lot to answer they think they are dog trainers because they breed and train for sheepdog trials but it makes you wonder how many other dogs they have ruined in the process. Sara has been entered in some Junior classes with Rusty, Ty and Jet and has done a little practice with them. She is very good for a 6 year old but when people ask her what she wants to do when she grows up she says "train dogs and ride horses". Feb 14th We have had a very exciting end to the week. The schedule for our KC show went on line with ISS Sunday morning and entries immiediatley started flooding in. The paying in book for the agility club account finally arrived and we started taking members. The details for the FMBB world championships have been announced and the opening ceremony is day earlier than usual so Mike has had to review the arangements for the team. On Saturday evening Claire and Mike went world champ training with Andy and Helen Brown. Jet is working well we would like a bit more speed so we will do some more fitness training. We took Emmy as she we are planning for her to be the white dog at selection and to get her ready for selection for 2011. However we realised she might be in season in March so we took Ty as well as he will have to stand in if she cannot be the white dog. It worked very well. Emmy is quite young and 2 hours is a long session for her. So Claire did some with her then Ty and then bacl to Emmy after a rest. We were please with all of them. After we all went to the pub for a meal and a drink. it was a bit odd as they were have a valentines. The group of us in dog training gear talking dogs were a bit out of place amongst the couples. The chap with the guitar singing lovesongs was very good though. Training in the week was steady the dry spell has continued but we have had a bitterly cold north wind which put a few people off. Mike is helplng more problem dogs which he can see in the barn. On Sunday the wind died down and the sun came out making for a glorious day, and the classes were very busy. We also managed to get a Photo of Mike for his entry on the Guild of Dog Trainers website. Holly's training is coming on so well we have entered her in a show. Just one class to begin with as we will have to see how she behaves in a show environment. Feb 7th Another good week for dog training with busy classes it has been mainly dry and cold with a few heavy showers and a couple of nice sunny days, the crocus have started to flower and the birds getting active. So its a shame the forecast for next week is it is going to turn wintery again. The ground has not been so good for tracking so Jet did some sendaways and he got up to 150meters and also did some redirection over much shorter distances. It is working really well alternating his agility training with other exercises each day. He works so much better and its fun too. Claire has been busy helping out at a couple of local stables that are having staff problems so Mike has been doing training with all the dogs. Not much agility but lots of general training exercises. Its really good that Holly will work with him now. On Friday a student from Bristol University came out and did some testing with them it was very interesting how they responded, but we not sure how the amount of training they do will effect the results. On Sunday afternoon we went training with Dawn Weaver at Cannington it was better than last time. We have also all been reading her book since before christmas. Most of her ideas are similar to our training principles and of course she is very succesful but there is something about the training sessions and the book we are not quite comfortable with. It's a bit too obsessive, a bit too precise and there is a lot more failure than the way we do things. The Dog Van is back with a new engine and clutch and numerous other bits and pieces and is now running like a dream. The heavy frost finished the engine off but it is now clear that there was something wrong with it before that. We will not be dealing with ex-police cars again. The show schedule is in its last stages of being checked by ISS and should soon be out. We have had a lot of offers of help but we will need every one of them and more and that will be the next stage. It has been very difficult getting the KC registered Agility club going first getting approval from the KC took ages and then getting a seperate club bank account set up has taken much longer than we thought. After more that 2 months they have finally sent a cheque book but nothing else. We should be up and running in the next couple of weeks and in time for the competition season. We are now starting to do courses with the competition dogs and on the 6th March we are having a simulated competition. Soon after we will be moving to weekday evening training. Time for a newsletter. Jan 30th Its been a great week for dog training dry and cold but not too icy. Jet has done some really good tracks. We have also noticed something interesting. There is a small herd of fallow dear that live in the fields around us normally when they see a dog they are off like dicky lightning but when Jet is tracking they watch him go by and then continue grazing. We have also been catching up on some agility training with our dogs. We are so pleased with them and we are really looking forward to the coming competition season. On Wednesday Rusty had to go to London for a photo shoot. Claire was already booked up to work at a local stables and Mike had lessons to teach so Glenda took him. He was little star he loves this sort of attention and behaves perfectly in complete contrast to when he is in hunting mode. All the classes are busy again and some lovely young dogs and puppies have just started. The first instructors course is almost fully booked and the second is filling up fast. We also have had several problem dogs this week fortunately they are not too bad and shouldn't take too long to sort out. It is a bit of a concern that they have all had some really poor advice from dog training clubs. Even more worrying is the huge increase in calls we are getting to help with rehoming and rescue. We give as much advice as we can and let people know who can help. But we are not a rescue organisation and do not have any facilities so why do people have to get offensive when we say we cannot take dogs ourselves. On saturday evening we went world champ training at Andy and Helen Browns. Because the dog van is still off the road we could only take Jet and Emmy. We were very pleased with them. Jet is improving all the time and seems to be over the problems he had with their modified seesaw. Andy has also put a rubber surface on their dog walk which put Jet and a few other dogs off initially but they soon got use to it. Emmy is not out of place in the company of some very good dogs even though she has yet to compete in a show. Greg Derrett joined us to pratice for his selection. We had hoped to learn something from him but that didn't happen as he works his dog Dee so differently from anybody else including his own handling system. We timed some elements and were very pleased Jet was not far off the pace set by Greg but he looses it on the speed doing contact equipment. He will never be able to match a good collie but there is still room for improvement. Mike has also been able to do some good training with Holly it has taken a lot of patient work to get her over her fear of men but now she is very confident with him and she will recall to him, bring him toys to play with and even push into his lap for a cuddle. Jan 24th A week of mixed fortunes Mike got back from the Isle of Man after an interesting and enjoyable weekend to find the engine in the dog van had packed up and has to be replaced. Fortunately the weather has improved and the afternoons are staying light longer which raises the spirits. Classes are building up now particularly at the weekend which stayed dry and mostly sunny. We had some really good training sessions including our Saturday afternoon competition workshop. These are getting so popular we have had to turn some people away and we are trying to work out how we can fit in some more. On Sunday we went training with Dawn Weaver at Cannington. Claire and Helen went in the morning while Mike and Glenda took the lessons then Mike joined Claire for the afternoon session. It is good to go some where else to use other equiptment and get another view of how ours dogs are progressing. Ty and his girlfriend Honey are going to have puppies all being well. Normally we would not be too keen on breeding more collies as we have so many requests for help with rehoming them. But Honey is such a sweet natured friendly dog and Ty is an exceptional working. They have both been eye tested OK and Ty has a good hip score and they both have good temperaments. With Ty being a blue merle from a red merle dad and a black and white mother and Honey being a lovely deep red there should be puppies with great colours. We would love to have one ourselves but do we have room for another dog or would 8 be too many ??
Jan 18th Yet another extraordinary week. There do not seem to be any normal ones recently. We seem to have gone from winter to spring in 2 days. On Thursday the track and arena were frozen up but by Saturday it had all gone. Mike was away running the Instructors Course for Douglas DTC on the Isle of Mann and when he got back he found out that he has been accepted as a Member of the Guild of Dog Trainers. The classes have started getting back to normal and Claire and Helen ran them while Mike was away. Sunday was a beautiful day and really busy. Jan 10th Well we know its a bad winter when it snows here. Claire is 21 and she has seen more snow this week than in her whole life. The track and the arena are totally frozen up and we have not had any classes this week. We have had some very strange days. On a couple there has been a blanket of pristine snow but there has been an absolutely clear blue sky not even a vapour trail from a plane and it has been spookily quiet because there is so little traffic. One night there was a very bright half moon that reflected of the snow with ghostly glow . A couple of nights later there was an amazing view of the stars. We have tried to keep our dogs ticking over with some basic training and a little agility. We have done some amazing tracking it is so useful to see the trail the dog is following so clearly. The dogs really enjoy running in the snow and that seems to be keeping them fit. It has been too cold for the young dogs to be in their kennels so they have had to come in to the house. They have either been too tired or they were please to be the warm but they have beed extremely well behaved. We tried to get them to pull Sara's sled with limited success. We eventually gave up and went sledding on cadbury hill instead. That was exciting and dangerous people were completely mad. The forced break does have its advantages all the paperwork is up to date the accountant will be pleased. We have also just about finished the show schedule and it just needs a couple of bits of information and it should be out in the next couple of weeks.
Jan 3rd 2010 This week was another strange one we did not have any classes which was just as well Monday was nice but we had constant light rain all day Tuesday and Wednesday, and all the ice thawed. A bit unfortunate as we had our christmas walk on Tuesday about the worse day for weeks, but we made do with a short walk and a long time in the pub. Then on Thurday it switched back to dry and cold again and has stayed that way since. We had to move the sheep on News Eve Ty worked hard and pushed them on in the end but they have become very stubborn. We use the Belgian Shepherds to hold the sheep back when we are putting their food out and the sheep are standing up to them. We will not be able to train any young dogs on run any herding assessments for a while. They will be ideal for stock socialistion though. We have not done a lot off training with our dogs over the holidays but on Saturday we went world champ training with Andy and Helen Brown. Jet worked really well and it looks very promising for him this season. Claire worked Emmy she will not be able to do the selection this time but we hope to use her as the white dog in preparation for selection for next year. She has never done this sort of training before and we were absolutely delighted she was brilliant. Our agility classes started up on Saturday and Sunday and we got off to a steady start we have moved a lot of dogs up into higher classes and will be taking on more beginners over the next couple off weeks.
Dec 27th
We have had a great christmas but what a strange week. Most of the country has had a terrible time with the winter weather. Really it has not been that bad here but we have had some snow showers which has started to thaw in the afternoon and then frozen as soon as the sun sets. The whole 100m of our drive has been a sheet of ice and the arena is also frozen solid. So we have not been able to do any lessons this week. Instead we have been catching up with paperwork and getting the class and ring plans sorted out for our agility show. Our grass training paddock is not too bad and we have been able to do a little bit of training with our dogs. On Monday Emmy and Jet went for their booster vaccinations and had a checkup. Emmy is a bit underweight which wasn't a surprise she is not a great eater and is very active. Jet's fitness training has been working even more than we thought. He has lost 1.5 kilos a bit too much for a 3 year old dog we would like him to put on about half a kilo but as muscle not fat. At the same time Ty and Rusty had their Rabies vaccinations to get their pet passports as Claire is going to try out with them for the world champs in the summer. Rusty is the same weight 7kg he has been for the last couple of years and very fit. Ty is the same weight as last year and in the ideal condition for a canine athlete. Dec 20th The cold dry spell has continued and we are using it to to catch up with some farm jobs, one is burning the rubbish particularly the dead wood blown from the trees by the storms. The dogs love it when we are doing this, they run around us and play for hours. There was one interesting incident Holly and Rusty crossed the rhyne (a deep ditch/stream) ran towards our sheep. This could be the worst combination a collie that has been rejected from sheep work for chasing and a terrier, but we have done a lot of work with both of them individually. Mike saw them going and called them back from about 50meters away, they stopped dead and returned right away. A very satisfying result. It also helps that the sheep are being fed at the moment and come when we call them, the dogs looked back to see that the sheep were following them. It has been below freezing for most of the week and on Thursday and Friday there was strong North easterly wind bringing snow to many areas. We are fortunate we are only couple of miles from the sea and about 5m above sea level, benefiting from the gulf stream and we are sheltered on 3 sides by hills. So we have our own micro climate but it will get very bad if the wind shifts to the north west though. The wind died down on Saturday and Sunday and we had a couple of lovely days with surprisingly full classes. We had thought it would be a lot quieter with the weather and xmas coming up the competiton class was particularly busy and we enjoyed lots of mulled cider and loads of mince pies. In the evenings we have been watching Olympia it is a shame there has not been more agility but we all enjoy showjumping anyway. We were very pleased to see a new person Lucy Osbourne winning the large finals, but would have liked to see Mark win it just to see an ABC do it, and felt for Dave a brilliant round that had just one tiny mistake. It was very difficult to see why so many dogs were turning the wrong way after the long jump. Dec 13th It is great to be having a dry spell even if it is cold. The arena has drained completely and the surface seems to be better for the long soaking. Most of the standing water has drained from the fields and the training paddock but they are still fairly wet. The number of people at classes is slightly down with christmas coming up, but the people who have come have had really good sessions. On Friday Claire and Mike went to a training session at scrambles with David Munnings. David was great with lots of positive encouragement and ideas for tiny improvements. The conditions were a lot better as well. Ty was absolutely brilliant and Claire was on good form only making a mistake on the very last exercise but still got some good tips. from David. Jet is improving all the time and we were very pleased with him. We have trained with David, Toni Dawkins and Dawn Weaver in the last couple of months are we are really pleased that their training methods have suited us and our dogs and are very much in line with our principles and ideas for training. Anyone who trained with us or with someone who comes on our instructors course would not have any problems training with them. We also took Emmy and Holly to socialise. Emmy barked a bit meeting new dogs in new place which is good it gave us the opportunity to teach her to be quiet and relax. She had an opportunity to have a couple of goes on the weaves and contact equipment and was just great it is so useful to get young dogs to train on different equipment. With Holly we concentrated on the socialisation, she is very good when being trained or playing with Claire and will ignore the other dogs. We would like her to relax and just sit or lie quietly when other dogs are working so we are trying out some relaxation techniques first away from the working dogs and gradually getting closer. We had some success but it would most likely have worked better if she had had more exercise first rather than a long van journey. We will have to try it at some other venues and shows. We left earlier than the previous week but there was an accident on the M4 and we still did not get back until 8.30.
Dec 6th We have had to get the thermals out this week and they seem to have shrunk a bit since last winter. We have had a couple of frosts and a biting north wind and some more rain. At least when it is frosty we get a dry spell. We have still been busy with classes and training our own dogs. On Tuesday we brought the sheep in to check them and take the ram away. We used Dash to bring them in and she did it just as well as she has been doing it for the last 13 years. We thought it would be a bit much for her to take them back out again so we used Ty and he did a really good job. The sheep have a tendancy to split into two groups. Dash would just stand off a bit and let them join up again but Ty still turns onto one group so we just give him a down command to hold him while they reform. Apart from that he needed very few commands he will soon have the hang of it and be just as good as Dash. On Friday we (Claire and Mike) went to a training session with Toni Dawkins at scrambles in west London. Toni had lots of good advice and ideas that fit in well with our training ideas. Ty and Jet did some really good work and coped really well with Toni's exercises. Jet did not have any problems with the seesaw. We also took Holly and did a bit of socialisation with her before our session. She was very good. Claire could keep her attention on her with a toy and even did a couple of jumps and a plank with her. If we tried to just let her sit quietly she was ok unless a vocal dog was working. When she got too excited Mike took her lead and Claire went away only coming back when Holly settled down. This is working quite well and we will try it at some other venues and then shows. So it was worth the long journey and in spite of being dark, cold and wet. We got tangled up in Walton on Thames Christmas carnival on the way back and had to stop for some fish and chips so it was nearly 10pm by the time we got back. Saturday was a nice dry day, if a bit chilly and our morning classes and afternoon workshop were very busy. The weather held on Sunday morning and we had some excellent beginner classes. We have some great beginner dogs including a complete teams worth of lovely Border Terriers, The competition classes were a bit quiet as a few people were off at competitions, but the people who did come had a really good training sessions. Heavy rain came back in the afternoon so we had a pleasant break. We have just entered our first competition for next year. We are going to the Easter Celebration at Ardingly. Claire wants to have a go at qualfying for the Olympia Novice Class before Ty goes grade 6. Emmy and possibly Holly will coming out. It is really strange and quite exciting to be entering a show so early but we want to be sure of camping.

"If I wasn't doing agility in the rain, I would be walking the dogs in the rain" Ian
We are just about saturated now. A couple of times the water has been up to the top of the ditches and it takes a couple of dry hours for them to get back to normal levels. The arena has drained enough to continue training and we have not had to shelter too often. Most people has continued to train and we should have a great group of dogs ready for next season. We are also doing increasing amounts of work with problem dogs. We are being very successful giving people practical ways of dealing with problems in a friendly and helpful way without them feeling bad about it. Nearly all the people are coming as a result of word of mouth. How is it we can do it? Well we have been living with and training dogs for a very long time and we have encountered those problems ourselves and know what it feels like. We are fortunate that we can go out any time to train with our dogs and we have been doing lots of short training sessions which is working very well. We have also got the last of the apples collected. It has been a very dissappoining crop both in quality and quantity but that is the way it goes with cider apples. The dogs can now enjoy running in the orchard and the fields behind it but we are keeping up our walks on the mendip hills. The bad weather has meant it has been very quiet up there, marvelous. We have been exercising the dogs by getting them to run up and down some steep slopes and of his own accord Jet started climbing a nearly verticle 12 foot bank. Then he worked out how to come down in perfect style. I have not been able to train him to come down the working trials scale safely and now he has shown he can do it. Maybe I will transfer this skill to the scale and we will have a go at some working trials next year. He does all the other execises so well especially tracking. We have been looking at agenda for the next agility liason meeting, the forum threads and Gregs big winge. Yes there are lots of valid points but it paints such a gloomy picture of agility but we have been having a great time.
November 21st What an interesting week it has been. The Kennel Club may finally be doing something positive about the appalling situation at agility shows with dog aggresion incidents, and what a rumpus it is causing. The sooner something is implemented the better. Dogs have very few options other than to show or use their teeth in order to protect themself and it is up to every handler to ensure they do everything possible to prevent incidents. Show organisors could do a lot more as well. Ty has a wonderful temperament but 3 times he has been chased in the ring, 3 times attacked while waiting outside of the ring once a ball was thrown out of a queue and went under him closely follwed by a dog and he had a motorbility cart park on his tail while queuing, he is naturally very defensive now and we have to work hard to protect him and stop him taking care of himself. He is totally relaxed and ok with other dogs when we go sheepdog training and there is plenty of excitement there. We have also seen some terrible organisation at shows which just make these problems more likely. We must have space, proper control by collecting stewards and warm up areas. The Kennel Club is also showing their teeth in their campaign to sort out breeding problems by threatening to remove CC's from GSD's if they don't get their house in order. The GSD societies have also put forward some good suggestions which the KC appear to be ignoring and there is a standoff. Lets hope a solution can be found and this once wonderful breed can be saved. I had hoped to get to a meeting organised by the Belgian Shepherd Dog Societies with the KC genetics expert, but we were just too busy with classes. The meeting was to address a potential problem with the gene pool for BSDS's getting smaller because the same stud dogs are being used. One solution would be to allow intervariety matings which we are very much in favour off. We wanted to mate a wonderful BSD bitch Tia but could not find a suitable dog because so many of the stud dogs were related to her. She got closed pyrometra when she was about 5 and although we saved her she was never the same dog. We have heard it was a very positive meeting and everyone was keen to be proactive and as well a intervariety meetings look at only registering dogs that have been health screened and limit the number of time a stud dog can be used. We have also received the licenses for our first Agility Show so we have been busy contacting Judges, booking equipment and producing the schedule looking for trophies and schdules and so may other things. Only Glenda and myself have previous experience of running a show but the rest of the team are very enthusiastic. I hope they feel the same after the show. And the FMBB have announced that the BSD world championships will be at Cottbus in Germany (nearly in Poland) in May so Mike has been arranging accommodation and travel etc. On Friday Mike, Claire and Helen went down to Dorset for some training with Dawn Weaver. Fortunately the weather good and we had an interesting session which gave us some ideas to think about. It was a long trip with an early start and we were finished by 12 so it was a pub lunch and a walk on the Mendips on the way back. On Saturday morning the weather was starting to turn but we had some good classes and in the afternoon the competition workshop went ahead with the weather getting steadily worse. However spirits remained high and we had a very good session. Ty gave us some light entertainment by killing a large rat and being very pleased with himself ran to Claire to present her with it. As an experienced dog trainer Claire should have known better but she is not fond of rats and squeeled and ran away. Ty thought this a great game and bounded along after her. Glenda and Mike nearly split their sides laughing.
November 15th
What a difference a day makes. The wind and rain has gone the sun has come out the A frame has been repaired again and all the classes are packed. This is just the competition class our beginners classes are even busier and all the classes are a really great bunch of people and dogs.
November 14th The first of the big winter storms came through last night and it was a big one. The premier A frame in the sand arena had been completly flipped over and Mike needed to make some repairs. Strangley the Adams A frame in the grass paddock hasn't moved. There was a lull in the weather in the morning and some hardy souls came training but the storm resumed and we had to cancel the afternoons competition workshop. It was just as well as the A frame blew over again. It is the only time in the last 20 years it has been that bad.
The last few weeks have been a really hectic time. Our classes have been very busy despite the weather turning wintery. The worst of the weather has been at night and the days have not been too bad. We have only had to shelter in the barn a couple of times and we have been able to do something until the worst passed. One thing we do in this situation is practice for measuring, and we can explain about how register and get ready for shows. We can also do some basic exercises, and work on socialisation.
We have also had some great news from the Kennel Club our application for our Agility Club has been accepted. So all the things we have been planning suddenly have to be put into action. We have decided to start the new memberships from January. That will keep things tidy and we will have time to get ready for teams next season. We are also steaming ahead with organising our first show. We have a great venue near Thornbury it has 50 acres of well drained sloping field and 50 acres of woodland walks. It is scheduled for 10th 11th July and we are very excited about it.
October 27th A pretty unusual week. We have been really busy with all of our lessons and we have been making use of the good weather to train our own dogs which is going really well. It was Glenda's birthday at the weekend so we went away for the night on Sunday and had really good Italian meal and stayed in a hotel in Rochdale. So why drive 200 miles for a night out. Well we now have 4 large dogs and Rusty and we hope they all will be competing next year and they will not fit in our Land Rover Discovery so we decided it was time to change to a van. We have been watching one that we liked the look of from ex-policecars, it is a ford transit with good cages, ventilation, cctv, hot water, sat nav, & hands free phone. The price had just dropped and there was chance to part exchange the Discovery so off we went. All went well the trip up wasn't too bad despite miles and miles of roadworks, the hotel was excellent and it was a very short walk to the Italian restaurant, Glenda and me had a lovely evening and a relaxed start with a full breakfast the next day. In the remote possibility we are ever in Rochdale again we will know where to stay. We set off across the dales to Sowerby Bridge arriving a bit early at 10.30. The dealer had not arrived at work yet! So we explored having a nice walk along the canal and river and we helped a narrow boat through the lock. By 11.45 there was still no dealer so we went for a cup of tea. At 12.15 hooray he was there. The van looked just what we wanted but it took an hour to agree a deal, it then took another hour to sort out insurance and a trip to the bank in Halifax to get a bankers draft, as the dealer could not take any cards, by now my patience was starting to wear a bit thin. But we finalised the deal and set off home. Fortunately the van drove really well and we made good time in spite of heavy traffic and got home at about 6.30. I will miss the disco it was one of my favourite vehicles but needs must and it seems to have worked out in the end.
October 19th It has been another good week. The change to winter training times are now complete and we have been really busy. I gave Jet a week off agility after the world champ selection and just did some walks and little bits of tracking and work around the sheep. Emmy is in season and he suddenly understands what it is all about. We are having to be careful keeping them apart we do not want them having any puppies yet. He is 3 yo and Emmy is having her first season at 17months a right pair of late developers. This weekend we had the last of our instructors courses for this year. It was really enjoyable and we had lots of positive feedback. The weather stayed fine if a bit chilly and we got lots of practical work in as well as covering all the theory. We have reduced the theory because we have found most people had already covered it in other ways on other courses, at college or reading. We sent them the course notes in advance with the key things they should know about and covered them in detail if they were not sure about them. This worked well and they all got extremely good scores on the test papers. Rusty is now training for grade 6 and 7 classes so we need a lot more speed and working further away to be successful. So we are training running contacts and sending away it is working better than we expected. Ty's is briliant as he always is at home so Claire is going to trying getting to some training sessions away. Holly's agility is looking equally briliant but we have a lot of work to do with her socialisation
October 10th Its been an interesting couple of weeks as the evenings start to get dark early we have been changing over to to our winter training times. Some classes are really busy and some are quiet it will soon even out. We have a great bunch of beginners they are really nice dogs and people with loads of ability and enthusiasm. I have also been getting Jet ready for the first BSD world championship selection. We have been doing FCI specification weaves and tyre for 3 weeks and courses with much bigger distances between obstacles. We went to Andy and Helen Browns FCI training and he had a bit of mishap on a seesaw and we couldn't get him back on it. He has been a bit wary of them since an accident when he was quite young, which has been re-inforced by some mishaps at competitions. He was fine back home but I didn't won't to take any chances so took him around to some other places for seesaw training thanks to Gemma Osmand, Leslie Skinner and Toni Keating. The selection day was on Saturday 10th Oct. We drove up to Hinckley DTC agility field early in the morning through patchy fog but it started to clear and we had a glorious autumn day. Steve Croxford facilited and judged again and we had a very efficient ring party of Margy Pratten, Ken and Sue Bowe from BSDA and June LeFevre from WBSDS. It all ran very smoothly making my job as team manager easy and letting me concentrate on Jet. Claire also came up as my groom and coach and she also ran Ty as the white dog. There were 25 dogs in the trial and more grade 5,6 and 7 dogs than ever before so it was very competitive group. I was really pleased with Jet we only had a slight slowing up for the seesaw and he worked well on some very testing courses that caused a lot of eliminations. I still cannot run properly and I was a bit dissapointed that I couldn't get some faster times and also on the last of the 4 runs I just couldn't get to the position l needed for the last couple of jumps and got Jet eliminated. His over 3 runs were pretty good though and we are still in touch and could qualify at the next selection in March. He is lying at 9th place and 8 dogs are in the WC squad. A lot can happen in 5 months so we are quite hopeful. I am doing training specically for the WC over the winter and I am going to keep a record of it on his own training page. Ty's runs as the white dog were also very good and show that he will be ready for top level competition next season. September 28th Well its been a very hectic couple of weeks. We have stacked 600 bales of hay in the barn and we have started collecting apples for cider making. It has been a bit warm and they will not keep very well it is great shame as the crop is very disappointing this year. As well as this work all our dog training classes are getting really busy as people return from holiday. We have had another day of special agility workshops and our special introduction to herding and stock socialisation workshops, they were really successful and we are delighted with the positive feedback from them. Last Saturday we went to the CSJ finals at the Malvern autumn show. It was a really good day out really well run by Anne and Stuart Harmes from CSJ. It was a really interesting group of people and dogs with some top handlers with their young dogs and a few new people. There had been about 6 qualifying events around the country for grades 3,4 and 5 so there were a huge number of dogs trying to qualify for this event. Claire was working Ty who she had qualified by winning the class at the Thames show. He did very well in the final coming a very creditable eighth. We were very please as it was Claires first national final since returning to a agility. By coincidence we found some old photos of Claire at crufts in the YKC finals about 10 years ago and many of the faces around her are the same as the ones at the CSJ final. On sunday we went to Honiton show it was a good day out but I was really disappointed they had moved the rings back up onto the slope. It doesn't matter what platitudes the organisers can come up with there is no excuse for letting people run on a steep slope with wet long grass and copious sheep muck. It was also dissapointing that some of the judges had not altered their courses to make them safer. Conditions improved as the sun came out and dried the ground out. In the afternoon it was really hot for the time of year. Jan and Lexie did really well winning a G2 jumping class and getting really close in the agilty. Jane and Boot continued their good form winning another G1 agility. Helen did an amazing round with Taz just messing up the last jump they are sure to well next season. Ty is having a few last pole problems in the weaves and very unusually had a pole down. Rusty is back in the wars one of his dew claws was sticking out at an angle and is obviously distracing him. He is putting up such a fuss when we try to get a close look at it we can't tell if it is a serious injury or not . We will give it a few days and if there is no improvement it will be the vets again. Anyway his first G6 show didn't go as we hoped and we ended up withdrawing him. Jet had a good day getting a 5th in a complicated G4 Jumping class and just a dog walk contact fault. I will have to get some work in on that we have the BSD world champ selection in 2 weeks. September 13th Another Fantastic weekend we are enjoying an indian summer which is very welcome after all the bad weather during the real summer. We did not have any competitions but on Friday and Saturday we were running one of our courses for people who want to be agility instructors. We are so pleased with the way these are going, we are meeting so many nice agility people, and getting lots of positive feedback about our training methods. Most of the people on the course were staying at the nearby Bridge Inn and on Friday night we all (including the children) joined them for a meal and we had really fun evening. After the course finished on Saturday Claire and Me shot up to Worcester to train with Andy and Helen Brown, Michelle Griffiths, Gille Raddings and Sian Harvey. We are getting ready for the selection for the Belgian Shepherd World Championships and Claire is joining in with Ty to get ready for the CSJ final. The training was really good FCI courses are so different from what we have been doing and it is important to get the dogs used to them. It was a beautiful evening so we were outside in a grass paddock. We then followed it an excellent meal and a drink in a neardy pub. We had a bit of rest Sunday morning then went down to Clevedon sea front to do a demonstration. It was in aid of Marlans a group who keep keep the facilities on the sea front in order. They have lots of family attractions, live music from local performers and a bar with a selection of local ciders. Yet a again the weather was great brilliant sunshine with a pleasant sea breeze. We did a couple of formal demonstrations and in between we trained the dogs while I explained to the crowd what we were doing, we also had great fun with a circular knockout. We had the main arena all afternoon and for most of the time we were there the audience was 3 deep around us.
September 6th Another amazing weekend, Last weekend was Helens official birthday and this weekend was her real one we were at Prestbury Park show somewhat confusingly held at Cirencester Park, it is a great venue and the weather was reasonable not too hot but no rain, and we over indulged in bacon and egg rolls, strawberries and chocolate and sparkling rose wine with strawberries and lots of birthday cake. We also squeezed in some decent agility. Lady of the weekend was Jane and her collie Boot on Satuday they got 4th in G1 agility and 7th in C1-2 agility then on Sunday they got second in C1-2 agility and to cap it all they won G1 agility. They had just pushed Ute and Amina (Emmy's mother) into second place. Claire also did very well she and Rusty won another G5 agility, and then Ty won G4 agility 2 seconds faster than both the second dog and the winning G5 dog on the same course. They also got a 6th in C3-5 agility, Jet is working well getting 5th in G4 jumping, 9th in G4 agility and 16th in C3-5 agility. An interesting observation on Jets performance we had been doing a lot of work sending him onto tunnels in preparation for the steeplechase finals and that had clearly paid of as he won it and this weekend on most of the courses it was still an advantages. However on 2 courses it caused elimination so I will have to put a lot of work into calling off tunnels and wrong tunnel entrances ready for the BSD world championship trials.
August 31st What a weekend. We started by going to Helfest. Helens weekend long birthday party. We only went for the Saturday and had a great time time but it was not the best preparation for the competition on Sunday. I felt a bit dehydrated on Sunday morning so had obviously eaten something a bit too spicy.
We also had a flat battery first thing Sunday so we arrived at the UKA staverton show just in time for Claire to go straight into the Senior Steeplechase which she won. Jet was in Novice steeplechase shortly after and worked well just crashing through a jump. We then had a long break when we tried to recover and then we had a load of runs in a short time. Ty was second in Novice Steeplechase, Third in Senior power and Speed, and Fourth in Senior Jumping, Jet was Second in Novice Agility, Third in Power and Speed and Eighth in Jumping. We then had another long wait until the main event at 5.30 and the reason we were at this show the finals of the Dog Games Beginners Steeplechase. Unfortunatley the Senior class was running at the same time and Claire had to run Ty and Rusty and do the final all within half an hour.
The final course was a challanging 175 meters with lots of long runs past jumps to tunnels. It was well supported with a good growd cheering the competitors on. There were 22 maxi dogs in the final and 4 of them were from Diamond Dog Training, Sarah and Murphy did a really good run just getting caught out by trap where you had to run past a jump to get to a tunnel, Claire and Ty did a really fast 31.5 secs but had 5 faults for a run past on a tunnel but came 10th, Carol and Seiren did a brilliant clear round and came 6th. Me and Jet were the last but ones to go and after seeing all the collies flying round I knew we had to really go for it. I went for a long recall start, then sent Jet on to the tunnels and cut across where ever I could, on the final long run I just ran as fast as I could, our time was 30.42 but I had no idea how we had done until the presentation and I was delighted that we won it. Something really good was all the people, many of them with collies, who said how nice it was to see a BSD win it. We have a lovely trophy from dog games and we are looking forward to putting a suitable photo in it.
On Bank Holiday Monday we did a demonstration at the South Gloucester County Show. Once again it was a really good day. It was hard work but so worthwhile to have the chance to train our dogs in a different environment, and promote our sport and dog training to the public. Sara worked Ty he did very well for her and the audience loved it. It was also the first time Emmy has done agility properly at this sort of event and we were very pleased, she wasn't put off by the crowd or the other attractions and worked really well. We also took Holly for some socialisation.
I am so pleased to be running again, it has taken a trip to a speciallist running shoe shop and some very expensive road running shoes but it seems worth it. I can at least run although I pay for it later and standing around is very difficult.
August 16th We (Claire Helen and Me) went to the WBSDS Oswestry show and it was a great success for Rusty and Claire. They won G5 jumping on Saturday and Rusty is now Grade 6 and then they got second in another jumping and won G5 agility on Sunday. Ty was a bit fired up and had a few little faults and dodgy judging decisions but did some great runs getting a second in in g4&5 jumping. Jets jumping is improving all time getting a 4th and 9th but we are still having some contact and seesaw problems, Saturday we got the contacts but on Sunday I tried pushing him and he missed them, he also did an uncharacteristic flyer on the seesaw Saturday and must have scared himself because on Sunday he was backing off. Helen had a good weekend Daisy is getting around courses without elimination more often than not now and is just having a few faults. Taz is still very inexperienced and goes under jumps we expect she will be better next year. It was really great to meet some new BSD's owners and some old friends. It is the area where Ty is from and there were a lot of Bryning and Canen dogs all doing well but it was interesting to see the effect of different training. August 10th We ran modules 4&5 of the instructors course this weekend it is very hard work but very rewarding. August 1st
Claire has been off to the UKA nationals this week with just Ty while I took the classes and caught up with some farm work. She and Ty did very well. They got through to the second round of the nationals but not the finals, and they got 1st in both Agility and Time Fault and Out, 2nd in agility, and 2 x 3rd in Jumping. We don't do a lot of UKA shows as KC competitions are our priority so Ty had no Novice points at the beginning of the week and is now in Seniors, in fact he was in beginners at the start of the year.
I went up on Saturday and so we took Rusty and Jet, Rusty did well getting 2nd in both Senior Jumping and Senior Steeplechase, and he got all his contacts in Senior Agility (but Claire pulled him out of the weaves early). The best thing about my working Jet was I didn't fall over, Jet went well, but my foot has been playing up again (damn tractor clutch) and conditions were terrible especially early on. The venue is a nice sports field but it could not cope with the amount of rain and traffic. I just could not run, keep my balance and get in the right places to work jet properly.
There were all the usual calls for help you get with UKA shows with threats to close the ring if it didn't arrive, the problem is there are just not enough people there, and the classes finish quite quickly. We had 9 runs with 3 dogs and with course walking and treking to and from the distant day parking there was not time to help. I expect most people there were in the same position. I use to think that their policy of not waiting for the judge to hand out the awards was good one as it moved things along, but it has now degenerated into just anybody available dishing them out without so much as a hand shake and a well done, the whole thing is now very down market and I wonder why we bother at all.
On the positive side the classes finished early so we left which was just as well as the holiday traffic on the M5 was diabolical.
July 09
27th
Another busy and interesting week. Tuesday we went sheepdog training with Ty in the rain he is doing very well, we are now finding that he can be left to work the sheep more naturally. We are not sure how much more we will do with him he is good enough for helping the normal jobs and demonstrating at our workshops, and we do not really have the time to train for ot take him trialling.
Friday we ran a introduction to sheepdog training and herding assessment workshop. None of the dogs had much herding drive so we switched to stock socialisation we soon had them walking of the lead. recalling and retrieved surrounded by sheep, we also had a couple of gundogs that are going to be picking up next season and we had them retrieving dummies through sheep. So a very successful and enjoyable day.
This weekend we were at the Agility Club Championship show it was a very high standard throughout the classes and we were please our young boys got some good clear rounds a couple just outside the places, Rusty got 9th, and 15th in Jumping classes quite good now he is grade 5 on Sunday he has suddenly got a burst of attitude and did some blistering agility runs whcich caught Claire out. they just had a couple of little faults maybe he is coming back into form, we have been slightly altering his feeding so that could have soemthing to do with it. Jet had a good clear just outside the places in G4 jumping, and on Sunday we started to get it together to get 18th in CG3-5. I am strting to get my timing better as we practice more and his speed over the ground is improving, we have to work on tightneing up turns and accellerating out of them. In the agility classes he worked well but flew his dogwalk contacts. It is a price we are paying for trying to speed them up. We are managing a fairly reliable fast contact in training but haven't yet got it in competition. Ty did a realy good run to come 15th in the Olympia qualifier and an equally good run in the CG3-5 Agility just clipping a pole or it would have been a good placing. We spotted a problem in the jumping classes we use an "out" command to send the dogs wide and we have also been using it in Ty's sheepdog training. He has been going very wide and once looked very confused so we will have to rethink that.
20th
We had a fun weekend at Caerphilly Show Claire and Helen talked me into camping for the first time in ages and it was pretty good the weather stayed good until saturday night and we (Me, Claire, Helen, Bekki, Rachel, Jane, Jan, Amanda and Shane) and enjoyed a great chilli thanks to Jane, and plenty to drink. It was a really well run show the only problem was having the team dash first class on Saturday. It meant there was no time to sort out team changes and the judge, show mangement were not agreed on the rules. It caused chaos which we didn't recover from until the afternoon. Ty did very well getting a third place in G4 agility. Rusty was having a few lapses in concentration again, I was back to working Jet for the first time in 2 months and was even more rusty than I expected.
Things picked up on Sunday despite some appalling weather, Jet and me started to get it together again and we managed 10th,11th,12th, even Rusty did some good work considering the conditions just having a pole down on a spread and missed contact,Ty did a stunning G4 agility to get a second place. Jane got a 9th and Rachel 15th, Jan a 4th in G3 agility, and Amanda won a medium class, best of all Helen did a stunning round to win G1 jumping, have a look at
We have had a great weekend. It was the second of our agility instructors courses. I was very tentative about running these courses but received so much encouragement and support we had to do them. The first course was really good but this one was excellent, most of the gremlins were out of the way although there are still a few things we want to improve, but the course ran really well, the weather was changeable but we managed to do the theory in the barn when it was raining and the practical outside in sunshine, all the dogs were just right for the points we wanted to make, and we got the tone just right. It was relaxed and not stressful but the main points were made successfully. Most of all they were a great bunch of students, they came from Glasgow to Kent and they had a wide variety of experience of dog training, this led to a vigorous and healthy exchange of views. We went to the local pub for a meal and a drink on Saturday and I haven't laughed so much in ages. I am really looking forward to future courses.
7th
We have had an interesting day Holly has not been off the farm much since she has been with us so we took her sheepdog training with Ty. She was much better behaved than we expected and we are really pleased with her. Ty was a bit strong on his first attempt and really pushed the sheep on his second run he settled down and Claire got some decent work out of him I tried filming him but technology defeated me and we will have to try again.
4th/5th A lovely weekend at Tuffley show Gary and the team do a great job and it is lovely venue on the water meadows overlooked by Berkley Castle.
Congratulations to Carol and Seiren getting third in g1 agility it was a fantastic run and could easily have been a winner. It was so good to see Phil and Dylan back at a show after the birth of the twins they were a bit ring rusty but did some good runs, and baby Morgan seemed to enjoy being looked after by Sara and Bekki.
We did some good work with Helen and Daisy on her start line waits we should have that sorted soon, and her runs were very good apart from weaves which need a little more work, Taz only went under a couple of jumps in 3 runs so we almost have that right and she is still such a baby. Jane was very pleased with Boots two clear rounds it would be nice to get a bit more speed from him but at 9 years old it is expectant a bit too much and he tries hard enough for her.
Rusty did not have any classes on Saturday and was in really bad mood on Sunday, he ran out of the ring in his first agility class something he hasn't done for ages and really didn't want to work. He had settled down after few hours and did really good 1-7 jumping round but it was a flat out speed class and he wasn't fast enough to catch the G7 midi-collies, in his late Agility there was the regular Tuffley thunderstorm so he went on strike again. He didn't run out of the ring but he didn't work that well either.
Ty and Jet did not do very well on Saturday just the occasional missed contact and some weave errors that started with doing 9 poles with the last one a bit wonky, we hardly ever train for that so we can soon put that right. They settled down on Sunday and did some really good work, In the 3-5 Agility Ty was 9th and Jet was 17th, in the G4 Jumping Ty was lying 15th and Jet was just 4/100th second behind him. I am afraid to say we left before the final result but we had all got soaked in a downpour ironically while queing for an icecream it came on so fast.
June 09
Saturday/Sunday 27/28
We had an interesting weekend at Lansdown show. This is the first time in around 20 years I have not been involved in running this show or run a dog there. It seemed very strange but hopefully my foot injury will benefit from the rest. The show seemed to run ok without me, it is now up to 7 rings so it is shame dogs only get 2 runs a day if they are not in a crufts team or the ABC. Congratulations to Jan and Ruby winning G1 jumping and Caroline and Milo winning G2 agility. Claire ran all our dogs again with mixed results. It was both Ty and Jets first time in grade 4 classes, places were down to 12th and they were just out of the places in the runs they were clear in. Jet is closing the gap on Ty with time and was just one second behind him. Jet managed 14th place in the ABC qualifier and we had to give our details for the next round, The Kennel Club have taken over running it but we have no idea what is happening. It used to be the top 4 qualified so it could be they assumed up to 10 could already have qualified.
Rusty was yet again a little star on Saturday he won grade 5 jumping and on Sunday came second in grade 5 jumping. One more and he will be grade 6. He nearly did it in agility but had a couple of lapses of concentration.
Tuesday 23rd
Sheep dog training with Ty this morning. It ran a lot better this week. There were only half the dogs and the flock was split in two so there were fresh sheep to work with. Claire and Ty are really getting the hang of it now and worked really well, John Whitley the instructor is encouraging her to have a go at a trial.
Sunday 21st
Well we have had a very strange week. On Monday we found out that Ty's sire Mac has been eye tested and found to have a narrow tear drainage channel which can be a cause of Glaucoma a very horrible and serious eye problem. We had been planning to have our youngsters eyes checked and decided to bring it forward, we found a testing session not too far away at Dursely and booked it up for Thursday. On Tueday we went on a sheepherding workshop with Ty and it was a bit of a cockup there were too many dogs booked on it and some arrived at 10 and some at 10.30 and some were late. As there were too many dogs we only got two very short goes at working the sheep not a very good use of the best part of the day. My foot had been getting better but all the standing around involved started it playing up again.
On Thursday we found the vet surgery easily and ended up over an hour early. The receptionist told us off near by walk for the dogs
It turned out to be a steep climb up onto the top of the Cotswolds. We got back for the eye test and the dogs were brilliant and best of all Ty, Jet and Emmy are all clear. We then went to look around a place where we have been asked to run a big demonstration and possibly an agility show and other dog events.
Friday my foot is giving me absolute hell, I am off to the Doctor and he confirms I have Plantar Fasciitis as we suspected and I must rest and could be out of action for the rest of ther season. Claire will have to work all the dogs for a while.
Then we were off to Golden Valley agility show at Top Barn Worcester. It is a very well run show with an experienced team but it has got too big for the size of the venue and is very crowded and busy. Day parking is a terrible.
Rusty had one of his off spells most of the Medium classes were combined 1-7 which didn't help as they tend to be quite straightfoward for the younger dogs which gives him time to look around and there was plenty to distract him. Ty did a brilliant G3 jumping round only being beaten into second place by Anthony Clark and his young dog by 100th of a second, Jet is getting faster and was only 2 seconds but 20 places behind them, he also got a 18th in the other G3 jumping, and 4th in Combined 1-7 ABC, He was also a lot quicker in agility but missed his dogwalk contact. It is his 3rd birthday and a good time to reflect that this only halfway through his second season competing. Ty got a bit over excited and is attacking the weaves too hard again. Claire will have to go back to braking before the weaves. The only class I worked Jet in was the pairs with Claire and Ty and under the circumstances we are very pleased to got a fifth place.
We had 2 days at Thames show 13/14 June, What a great weekend it was the show was really well run with good classes and lots of qualifiers and the standard was very high. When we had some free time we enjoyed watching the championship and qualifying classes. As usual help drifted away on Sunday afternoon particularly noticeable in the secretaries tent. It was Claire's birthday on saturday and the boys gave her a great present. Claire and Rusty won Grade 3-5 Jumping and came second in Grade 5 jumping and on sunday they came second in Grade 5 agility very nearly winning it and going grade 6. Not to be outdown Ty worked brilliantly for Claire and won the grade 3-5 CSJ qualifyer, they won a bag of CSJ food a lovely leather collar and has qualified for the final in September, he also got fifthe in a very technical G3 Jumping.
May09
Hinckley KC Champ Show
What a contrast why should this show be so much better than Wye Valley they are both well established clubs they both had nice venues. Well the grass was cut in the rings and there wasn't muck everywhere but it was more than that. The show was quietly well run. There were a lot of qualifying classes, there were more experienced judges and better courses, but there was even more to it. The handlers and dogs were more experienced and the dogs were better behaved and we felt more at ease with our dogs. Jet and Ty are entire. They love attention from girlie dogs but are not so keen on other males invading their space. Both have had bad experiences at less well organised shows, with out of control dogs and both they and us have to be on our guard. It was so nice to be able to relax and handlers understood and more importantly had control of their dogs and appreciated our concerns and the effort we put into having our dogs under control.
The classes were combined and it was very tough competing against so many senior handlers. In the morning Jet did a couple of nice clears but wasnt quick enough to get in the places, Ty was working brilliantly but has slipped into the coming out of the last weave pole problem, at least the weave entries are now working well, back to training. It was extremely hot in the afternoon and our dogs were flagging, we are fairly sure it was just the heat but a very senior handler has recommended feeding CSJ command performance 24 or even 30. By coincidence we have just put them on 24 so it will be interesting to see if it has any effect.
There were not any classes for Rusty so we took Emmy to socialise and we were very pleased with her.
ps we trained Tys weaves today, cross behinds, in front, spins away, at a distance all perfect, we will have to try to train in more show like conditions.
Wye Valley KC We should really enjoy this show, it is at a great venue on a bend in the river wye in Monmouth but it just ok not great. Perhaps it is the grass that is so long you can't see the numbers, the liberal sprinkling of cow pats, (how did it get on my T shirt and trousers), the rings laid out in a huge square, the odd classes, (why have combined agility 1-7 and then split it 4 ways, more chances for the grades 6 and 7 to win), but it just doesn't work. The courses didn't help 2 grade 3 classes were really tricky and the 1-7 too simple. The medium jumping 1-7 had to be stopped after 10 dogs and the course redesigned, it is so difficult to build courses to suit this range of dogs so why have them. The medium agility course was quite good as was the pairs. We had 7 good runs in the morning just have unlucky 5 faults in each. Claire ran Rusty and he was ok he has never liked this venue and we have not really worked out why. Ty is on really good form just little errors in the weaves we have nearly cracked that, My foot held out ok so I ran jet Jet and he was Brilliant just having a pole down on a spread after a tunnel, and shying at a wobbly weave, and was clear in the pairs.
It was really hot in the afternoon and our remaining 3 runs didn't go at all well so the dogs enjoyed a swim in the reiver and we came home early for a barby.
Phoenix UKA
We had another great day at Phoenix, this a lovely local show, it was well orgained, the weather was good and the grass surface ideal, and of course there was good food all day and proper toilets. What more could you want. We were a bit distracted because Holly is ill but are pleased with how the dogs worked Ty and Rusy got a fourth place each and Jet a clear round, and we had a few silly faults. Sarah and Murphy did brilliantly getting their first trophy second in the steeplechase, and there were a lot of clear rounds for our Diamond Dog Training friends. Carol and Seiren got fourth places in Beginners Agility and Jumping
Severnside at the North Somerset Show
We had a really good day, it was a shame after so much good weather a cold front came through with a freezing north easterly and light showers, but we made the most of it. Severnside ran it fairly well, we could have done with a more room and toilets but you have to take what you can get at these big agricultural shows. Our club members did really well Jane and Boot got a very good fourth in G1 Agility, Rachel and Flint did really well getting 13th in G1 agility, 15th in ABC, and a clear in G1 Jumping and she worked Phils dog Dylan to get a very good 15th in G1 Agility, Helen and Daisy are getting it together if they hadn't put an extra jump in they would have done very well in the G1 jumping, Suzy is still having a few problems with Henry but went over to the gundog scurry and won 4th place and a box of chocolates. My foot is still playing me up so Claire worked Rusty again. We are going to make it permanant as she won G4 agility and got second place in both the Jumping and Steeplechase, he has also now got his 200 points for his Agility warrant. Ty is now under control and working beautifully, Claire held his contacts and steadied him for the weaves perfectly to get a third place in G3 Agility and with a similar performance got second in G3 Jumping. Jet worked really well I pulled him a bit short in the ABC steeplechase and G3jumping because I wanted to send him on and not run too much, but we did a great G3 agility run to get a 6th Place. To round the day off we did an outstanding large pairs with Ty and Jet winning the class.
April 09
WBSDS
We helped run this show and ended up working too hard as usual, but it was worth it. It was a really good show, well organised, good classes and there were plenty of helpers until Sunday afternoon. We had a small group of people from Diamond Dog training running the ABC ring and although they had not run a ring before they did a pretty good Job. Jet and me were not on the best of form just getting a 4th in ABC jumping and 17th in G3 Jumping.
I think I trod on a stone or something back at the UKA show and bruised my instep/heal and it is getting steadily worse, so Claire worked Rusty and they were absolute stars. On Saturday they won the helpers class, and Combined 3-5 agility, and came 3rd in C 3-5 jumping, On Sunday they got 2nd in C 3-5 Agility and 3rd in C 3-5 Jumping. He is now Grade 5 and we are so pleased with him.
Claire and Ty worked well winning the helpers class on Saturday and coming 6th in the helpers class on Sunday. He is still having a few problems with the weaves caused by running at them too fast, so Claire is stopping him before them and it seems to be working, of course he doesn't do it training at home so we are effectively having to train him at shows.
The people who came with us from Diamond Dog Training did quite well considering how little competition they have done, Carol and Seiren got a eighth in G1 Agility and fourth in G1 Jumping, Rachel and Flynn got 2 clear rounds, and Jane and Boot did a brilliant jumping round but knocked a brick out of the wall. Sarah and Helen did better than they expected and should be more confident next time.
Wallingford, We went for the Saturday only it was a nice enough show but the main lesson learnt was do not enter young dogs in Knockout pairs, The organisation of the pairs ring left a lot to be desired. We used to run a knockout pairs when it was sponsored by Barbour and I know how difficult it is, you need plenty of space for the collecting ring, and good organisation with a ring party experienced in running that type of class, there was none of that, result chaos. Both Ty and Jet were unsettled by the mayhem, and to make matters worse a dog with a muzzle on plowed into Jet's side he jumped sideways and bumped into another dog that justifiably snapped at him. It took the rest of the day to get him confident queuing again. We thankfully got knocked out in the second round, we were on the verge of withdrawing if it had not improved.
The dogs started to settle down in the afternoon, Ty worked well and had a couple of unlucky faults, Claire ran Rusty and he did some brilliant runs but again with just a couple of unlucky faults. Jet did a good ABC agility just missing the down contact a bit unusual for him I probably did something to put him of or he was still worried after being attacked. Fortunately he was back on form for Grade 3 agility getting 4th place.
We went to our first proper show of the season, the Easter UKA it was an ideal start, a nice venue and not too busy. Claire and Ty were stars winning beginners Agility and Gamblers and organisation steeplechases. Jet was not far behind with organisation x 3rd place, organisation x 5th and 8th, Rusty is getting back to his usual form winning senior jumping and getting 2nd in a steeplechase. Our diamond friends also did very well details to follow soon.
Belgian Shepherd Dog World Championship Selection Days.
Mar 09
I am really pleased with Jet we had the ideal result from our point of view. He is just a bit too young and inexperienced for world championships but the training has done us both the world of good, He ended up in 11th place and with only another six points he would have been 8th and in the team.
Feb 09 Training has been going well. We have had organisation more selection / traing days at Rugby DTC indoor venue and I have done some training with Andy and Helen Brown that has been really good, and of course Claire and Helen have been helping me at home. Jet is getting better all the time and he is also maturing physically and mentally. I am trying not to get to excited but I looking forward to the coming season.
Oct 08 I had a really good day at Steve and Yvonne Croxfords last Sunday at the Great Britain agility team selection. I am the team manager but did not have as much involvement as usual as I was working Jet. The weather was great sunny, but not to hot, the paddock surface was excellent, and there was a really good group of people and dogs taking part. The courses set by Steve were typically FCI and very challenging particularly for the young dogs like Jet. I am very pleased with Jets performance. We just managed to get into the squad that will train through the winter. He does not stand much chance of getting in the final team as there are some very good higher grade and more experienced dogs ahead of him. But it will be great to train with the the squad and I am sure it will help us have a really good season next year and be in really good form for the selection for 2010.
We don't have any more competions booked now and don't think we will be doing any over the winter but we will give reports from our friends who do go.
Honiton
Congratulations to Jane Piggot and Boot getting 9th in G1 jumping, they have only done a couple of shows and have got some clear rounds and must be delighted with this result.
Also well done to Nikki and Mia getting 8th in Agility
We had a really enjoyable time at Honiton show, now they have moved off the slope and down on the flat ground by the river the rings surfaces are a lot better. There was good group from Diamond Dog Training most have not been competing that long but had a good day. The food was bit limited and cold drinks in short supply. The organisation was mostly good and the classes had good combinations of grades. I had a very early run with Jet and the ground was very wet and slippery, I was doing a bit of grass surfing which caused him to have a (dubious) refusal rest of the round was good contacts and weaves ok if a bit slow because of my lack of running ability. My non slip running shows aint what it says on the tin, I must get some football boots. Things sort of picked up as the ground dried out Jet got a fifth in the Steeplechase against some fast opposition. In the jumping he was brilliant he finished to lots of applause and the judge clapped went to the presentation at the the end of the day- Nada - I couldn't be bothered to look into by this time but I will make a point of checking after my riuns in future. Rusty wass back on good form in the agility there was a horrible weaves entry at the start and I should have handles it better, but got 5 on the entry so that turned into a training round. That paid off because he did a super weave in G1-4 Jumping and came 2nd, and in the 1-7 steeplechase he got 7th against some really fast dogs. Ty working really well and got a 8th in Steeplechase, Claire made a tiny handling mistake in Jumping and got a 5R and time for another winge I'm afraid Ty did a really good running contact on the dogwalk all four feet on and got faulted, whats the point of running contacts if judges cant judge them, we have seen so much of it this season, I think I will have to have a winge on the forum.
Best of all it was the first show we have taken Ember to, she is an absolute star totally relaxed around the other dogs, interested in dogs running but not excessively. She was admired by a lot of people and really enjoyed playing in the river and had a thoroughly good time.
Prestbury Park
Our break over August as turned out to be double edged, It has been great for recovering from ailments and injuries both human and canine, but we were really ring rusty. I really liked this new show great venue I haven't been there since my scouting days a good few years ago and it brought back some memories. The show was well run but the classes need a bit of sorting I was caught in the worst aspect of the grade system Jets best run was in a huge combined class so didn't get placed and Rusty did a brilliant agility run but because there were so few in graded class he gor nothing for his second place. Ty did best with a 19th in Jumping again a huge combined class. The other runs were the usual silly five faults handling this time.
We only did the Saturday as on Sunday we did a Demo at a local festival on the Sea front. It was a hazzle to organise and very hard work but it worked out very well in the end.
August
We are having a bit of a break during August and are hoping we get over our injuries and ailments. I am also doing some training with Jet for the FMBB Belgian Shepherd Dog World Championship selection day. It is going to be interesting as the type of courses are quite different to those in the UK . Also he is still a bit young for it really and we are up against some really good dogs and handlers.
Recently there have been some great sucesses stories for some of the people who train with us.
Phil Hedley and Dylan his staffie cross went down to the UKA Cornwall show and got a 4th in steeplechase, 2nd in agility and 2nd in gamblers, then a 1st in jumping! and qualified for the steeplechase national championships in Staverton where they came 9th. Not bad for a team that have not been training very long.
Also Jane Piggot and Boot a working Sheepdog who has done very well getting a 4th in the Snooker out of 38 and then came 7th in the Steeplechase out of 89 at the UKA Cheltenham Show.
Emma Warren and her little terrier cross have recently managed 2nd for Agility & Snooker, 3rd for Jumping, Gamblers & Snooker, and 4th for Jumping
Nikki Dew and Mia at Staverton UKA got 2nd in Novice Power and Speed and 3rd in Novice Agility and at Cheltenham 3rd in Novice Snooker
Caroline O'Connors Border Collie Milo a dog who has not been competing long has the following results, 25th August - CR in Steeplechase, 7th place in jumping and 5th place in agility and 30th August - 4th place in steeplechase & 6th in jumping.
Blackdown AC
Big congratulations to Chris Lowe and her patterdale terrier Nellie who won out of G3 by winning small G3 agility
Well we are very pleased with the dogs In the G3 agility Jet came 8th and Ty 4th. Ty was a bit unfortunate he did a fantastic run but with 4 jumps to go a loose dog came into ring and looked like it was going to chase him. Claire did the right thing and put him in a down untill the dog was caught, they then had a re-run but they were a bit slower with a wide turn to the weave entrance. Rusty came 4th in 1-3 jumping, but is still working erratically Claire had finished her runs by 1Ty and all mine were done except Rusty's last by 12.30 we worked out it would be 4.30 by the time he would work again and the weather was getting worse so we left.
What a difference a venue makes this used to be such a lovely show. I don't know why they moved but this run down equestrian centre just isn't suitable for an open show, and then declaring it a moan free zone, well run a decent show then.
And where is the field officer at these shows they don't mind nit picking at the the big well run shows but you never see them sorting out the rubbish.
UKA 08
I went up to the UK National final show on Tuesday with Jet and Rusty. Claire had to work. The day started of well and the boys were on good form Jet won the beginners gamblers, and got 4th in Jumping and 6th in steeplechase and Rusty got 2nd in novice Steeplechase and 4th in Gamblers. The show organisation started to slip at lunch time. My last show run was at 3pm but I eventually did my National run with Jet at 7pm. On one hand I was dissappointed that he did not get through due to a dubious contact decision but I am really pleased that I don't have to go back on Thursday and possibly Saturday. Relaxed shows are all very well but there is a limit.
ps I seems that Jet had qualified for the next round but I didn't think we would get through on 5 faults and did want to hang about any longer on the off chance.
Agility Club
A big mostly well run show at Newbury Showground only problems were it was so hot with little shade and the hike from the parking to the rings.
Jet was a star this weekend two faultless team runs and the same in the pairs, and 16th in the Novice Agility (Grade 3,4,5) and 10th in Grade 3 Agility he is really enjoying it now and when it is going well he is brilliant, he gets a bit worried when it goes wrong so I don't let him know now and just carry on around the course as though that is what I meant him to.
Claire had some problems in work and couldn't get away for the whole weekend. She got to the show late and although did some good runs with Ty they had some little mistakes.
Rusty is still having some problems the bruising has completely gone now but he is still worried about the jumps, I have to be with him at every jump or he will go under. He is only 1cm into medium height. He did some some good work though and I hope he will soon get his confidence back. I didn't push him and stayed with him in the team and he did a nice clear and the same in the pairs where we were very pleased to get third place against some very good high grade dogs.
Caerphilly
Congratulations to Karen Hague winning medium G2 agillity with Clares dog Todd and Caroline O'Connor for winning her 4th G1 jumping.
Lovely show in a great venue only criticism is a few too many combined classes. We had more mixed fortunes the boys worked well generally but did better in the combined classes where the higher grade dogs got the better places. In the graded classes we had a few silly errors.
Jet managed to get get a couple of clears and a 12th in Jumping and Ty did best of all getting a 6th in Jumping and 10th in the collie sprint.
Rusty is really in the wars. He fell down on to the pole on the first jump in the first class. He carried on to do do a good run and then did really well in the team, but later on he developed a load of bruising on his chest and a lump under his front leg. Sue Yeo our vet was there and was concerned about the amount of bruising. It was fresh so couldn't be from some previous escapade, but seemed to be too much for his accident. Had he managed to get some warfarine. We treated him with Arnica cream and Metacam and he was a lot better on Sunday we did a couple of classes but were not on top form. He is a lot better now almost back to normal.
Bretford
Lovely little show at Bretford, just like the good old days of Agility, very friendly and well run by Graham and Gemma and their team. Very nice of Gemma to call me gorgeous or perhaps she meant Rusty which shows she doesn't know him very well. Helen insists that I report on the catering at shows so I must say I was a little dissapointed the rugby club was closed and being refurbished and there was the standard burger van. I was only there because I had BSD business in the area as it is a bit too far to be a regular show for us. I just took Jet and Rusty as Claire was busy at work. I (and mapquest) had underestimated how long it would take to get there and arrived just in time for the end of the first two classes for both Rusty and Jet. Naturally we didn't do too well. After we had settled down we had some good runs Rusty came 2nd in G3 Jumping and First in the Power and Speed, Jet got a 7th in Jumping and 9th in Helter Skelter. I was very tired and had not completely recovered from the virus so I was very pleased that I did not take Ty it would have been too much. I am happy we are back on track and I must make more effort to get to shows early.
Tuffley
Congratulations to Sally Harris and Flash winning their second G1 jumping.
Flash is a fantastic dog with loads of ability that has been training with me for a couple of years, as Sally gets more experience they are sure to be even more successful.
Great show, fantastic setting on the water meadows between Berkley Castle and the hunt kennels, efficiently and calmly run but I should have stayed in bed for the weekend. Glenda and myself have had another virus brought home by Sara and I was feeling terrible, On Saturday it was just the big dogs and to be fair Jet did a good jumping round just clipping a pole, but from then on he realised I was wasn't right and we were hopeless. Claire and Ty did well with just a couple of faults caused as usual by his speed. On Sunday we took all 3 dogs the weather first thing was appalling heavy rain and wind I really should have stayed in bed but managed to get Jet around the Team Dash pretty well and our team came 6th the other team members were Caroline O'Connor and Milo, Imogen Rogers and Marmite, and Helen Prosser and Baz,
For me it went rapidly down hill from there Rusty just wouldn't work for me he needs a lot of input and I just didn't have the energy. So I finally did what I should have done in the first place and let Claire work them. And she did a fantastic job Rusty got 8th in G1-7 jumping and was very unlucky hitting a pole in G1-4 jumping. She did a great run with Jet in the CSJ agility but didn't get a place they weren't quite fast enough makes you wonder what is the point off having combined 3,4&5 splitting the class and still having almost 300 dogs in a class.
Lansdown
Mega Congratulations to Caroline O'Connor and Jake who won their third grade G3 with an ammazing round good luck in grade 2.
Caroline has done a brilliant job with Jake a working sheep dog with very high drive she had to come for a lot of 121 lessons before we could get him into a class until just recently he has also been able to train at Severnside
Lansdown is another show I am not sure about now, only organisation runs per dogs each day if they are not in the Crufts team or ABC. Saturday we were busy helping most of the day and then had most of our runs late in the afternoon all in one hour announcements being shouted about classes closing while we were trying to get ready for the team and then we get there to find huge queues. Ty was working well except for his speed weaves, Jet had an unlucky contact and a clear in the jumping. Rusty saved the day by winning the G3 jumping, unfortunately it has gone to his head and he has decided contacts are something to slow up lesser dogs.
Sunday we decide to do less work and concentrate on our dogs. Ty is still missing weaves through his speed, Rusty has gone mad, but Jet is brilliant another clear round in JG3 jumping but was not quite fast enough for a place we need to look at that now, he did great round in G3 agility and came 21st in a huge class. We did an amazing ABC round on a tricky course the last jump was a slightly off line wall and I overhandled him pushed back and he went past it.
Still we are very pleased with how the dogs are coming on.
Golden Valley
Mixed feelings about this show the camping and day parking were really packed in and unpleasant, and the ring management was poor. I was also really dissappointed that people who said they would be in the team didn't turn up and didn't even let us know. After that we were pleased that the dogs worked well Ty just had some unlucky 5's, Jet did as well but got 12th in the 1-7 ABC jumping, Rusty was on brilliant form coming second in G3 jumping, had a good clear in 1-7 jumping but places didn't go down far enough to get anything. and he had an unlucky pole down in G3 agility. I am really pleased he didn't freeze or run of in the last few shows.
Thames
We did a local demo on the Saturday it was lots of fun but might of been a bit too much as the dogs didn't seem on the best form on at Thames on Sunday, Jet suddenly went tunnel mad in the first two classes and then in the third class G3 jumping didn't seem with it at all. Rusty worked ok but I was still expecting him to be like he was at Wye valley and it caught me out when well I didn't handle him properly. Ty had a really good run in the Olympia Novice qualifier and came 12th and just a couple of 5's in the other classes. I don't know why Newbury gets a bad press the rings were perfect for running on there is plenty of room, proper toilets, the only drawback was the lack of shade we would loved to have watched the championship classes but could stand any more sun.
Wye Valley
This should be a good show but I didn't enjoy it. Claire's mare foaled on Friday night and we were a bit tired which didn't help. But some of the ways the show was run could do with improvement, the grass had got quite long and there were cow pats everwhere, some of the rings were very close together particularly ring 3 which was stuck in a corner, which made access very difficult and the attitude of the ring party didn't help, and they have too many combined 1-7 classes. I don't think we will go there again.
Rusty just didn't work well. Maybe the smells in the long grass, as he just froze a couple of times. Jet did a great G1-7 Agility on a tricky course and came 11th and got a clear in G1-7 jumping. Ty is really getting it together now and did a fantastic G3 jumping round to come 4th.
Packington
We had a day off Sunday and then went up to Packington on the Monday for their second day. What a change in the weather it was stormy all day with high winds and intermittant heavy rain. Ty got an early run in the G1-7 Colllie Jumping and worked brilliantly getting an 18th place not bad against the senior collies perhaps we are getting somewhere. The conditions were terrible for the Olympia Novice qualifier the ring was exposed and dogs were getting blown off the dog walk, Jet got round with just 5 faults and Ty got 5 faults and Claire ran him past the dog walk, it is just too risky at his speed.
Martin Tate set a very interesting jumping course, it was very "FCI" style with long runs past jumps, allowing for high speeds and precise handling. Jet loved it but I will have to work on timing for these types of courses, We put both Jet and Ty wrong but it was very useful for future training ideas.
Jet had a run in the Olympia ABC qualifier, the ring was in a corner with a high hedge on two sides. Jet was doing very well until he trod on a ring number that had somehow got in to the dogs track and he stopped. Very pleased with the rest of it though.
Rusty turns out to be the star of the day, which comes as a surprise as he is a bit of a fair weather dog.
He started by winning the grade 1-3 jumping, then came 8th in G1-7 Jumping and second in the G 1-3 Agility at the end of the day.
Phoenix UKA
What a wonderful show Phoenix AC and UKA have really cracked this. Just the right size, good food in Langford canteen, lovely weather and good company sitting around the the rings, at not home too late. And to top it all Jet won beginners agility and came fifth in the jumping. I really didn't think he was fast enough as he is not organisation years old yet. I am still having to help him but he did the Agility in 25 secs. We watched a video done by Phil and he is really moving along.
Ty is still going too fast but other than that is working really well we will soon get the balance right.
Rusty seemed distracted perhap the long grass along side the outside rings had something more interesting to offer. He ran along the top of the tunnel at one stage. Terriers are good for your humility all dog trainers should have one.
Severnside at the North Somerset Agricultural Show
Ended up working too much again. At timess we had a Bacon family ring party, Glenda's mum Val doing calling, Glenda scoring, Claire Scriming, Sara (4) doing leads and me running about with everything else. Glenda and me were off to Slovenia for the FMBB world championships as soon as we finished and I was also worried we had everything ready. So the dogs didn't worked so well in the morning, It's not the best environment for Rusty. I shouldn't enter him really but since he is with us anyway it seems silly not too. We downed tools in the afternoon and it paid of Jet came 7th in grade 3 jumping and Jet and Ty came 4th in the Pairs, Ty was brilliant perhaps we are getting somewhere.
WBSDS
I was helping at the WBSDS show from early Friday until Saturday evening and stayed overnight Friday. I went home Saturday and returned Sunday with Glenda Claire and the dogs. Jet did well again just a dubious contact decision and he got 8th in Grade 3 Jumping. Ty is too fast still he does 95% brilliant rounds but is still going past the first weaving pole. Back to training. Rusty is working well but he needs 100% concentration and I was a bit too tired.
Wallingford
We had a good day out at Wallingford just taking Jet and Ty as there were no classes for medium dogs on the Saturday. Ty had a couple of 5's he is so fast he is going past the weave entrance. Jet did very well getting a 12th place in grade 3 agility and a couple of 5's for drifting past jumps. Early days yet.
Wye Valley Medium / Small
I had a nice day out at the Wye valley medium and small show at Monmouth. We had to be there early as Gemma Osmond was working Rusty in the Brace with her dog Toby and were running order one. They did quite well just a couple of problems in the weaves we should have got some practice in with Gemma working Rusty.
We then had to wait until 2pm for our other runs but filled the time with a couple of walks by the river, some bacon rolls provided by the scouts and chatting to people we hadn't seen since last season.
The grade 1-7 helter skelter was going quite well until Rusty decided he had to go and investigate an important smell outside the ring. That didn't look very promising for the team event but he did an absolutely brilliant round unfortunately the rest of the team had some problems.
We then did the grade 1-3 Jumping Rusty was great again but after the problems Gemma had had with the weaves we took them a bit steady and that added to the time in the end we came third. We were quickly into the grade 1-3 Agility and yet again Rusty worked very well, but after what happened in the jumping I pushed him a bit too hard in the weaves and he missed a pole. I took him back to the beginning of the weaves and let him do it his way and he was fine. I must to try to get that right in future. Still the rest of it was very good and we left just as it started raining and got home just in time to watch the Grand National.
North Somerset UKA
We attended the North Somerset UKA show at Wraxall last weekend (29/30th March). It was very nice being close to us and had lots of interesting things going on at the horse trials and country fayre. Unfortunately weather conditions were not ideal it was wet, windy and cold on Saturday, on Sunday it was much nicer with warm sunshine but overnight rain made the ground very slippery. There has been an outbreak of kennel cough in our area fortunately our dogs were not affected but we very dissapointed for the people who train with us who couldn't attend.
This is quite an important and interesting show for us. It is our first show of the season and being UKA the dogs have 4 runs each on both days so it tells us how our winter training has gone and what we need to do for the fast approaching competition season.
We did quite well
On Saturday Rusty came Second in both beginners steeplechase and Novice Gamblers and on Sunday he excelled himself and won the beginners steeple chase and then won Royal Canin Novice Agility he also came 2nd overall in the Royal Canin tournament. We believe he has now moved up to Novice steeplechase, and senior performance and has qualified for the Royal Canin final.
Claire and Ty are really starting to get it together. Ty had a few faults in the weaves caused by going too fast on the slippery surface but is improving with every run. On Saturday they won beginners Gamblers and on Sunday came 3rd in the Snooker.
It was Jets very first show and to begin with he seemed a bit unsure about it, probably because of the conditions and my strange handling cause by trying not to slip over. But he got around all the courses without any eliminations and with just a few 5 faults mainly for drifting past jumps. On Sunday he settled down and worked very well getting a clear round and eighth place in the steeplechase.
Sara (4yo) worked Dash (13yo) in the casual agility and jumping classes each day. Everyone was very kind to them and by the last run on Sunday they were starting to get the hang of it and they won the casual jumping and got a fantastic rosette and a trophy. Sara was very proud and took her rosette into school for show and tell.
Also doing very well were Sally Harris and Flash who won beginners steeplechase and are now in Novice and came second in Gamblers
